Was that picture taken this week in conjunction with the press release, or was it an old photo?

Excellent, must-read article about Jorge Lucas right here: http://acculturated.com/2012/10/31/george-lucas-just-saved-star-wars-by-firing-george-lucas/

It perfectly sums up, in ways I could never quite articulate, the reasons why Lucas has always been a man at odds with his own success, and why the prequel trilogy was so awful. But now there is a new hope: Disney.

Only to a point. I'm thinking Roddenberry on the TREK sequels at most. And if GL should go public with displeasure, he'd probably encounter a scenario along the lines of what Harlan Ellison summed up as, "At Disney, nobody F***S with the mouse."

Yeah, Lucas is now sidelined. He gave 'em story outlines and will serve as a kind of consultant, but Disney is gonna protect their investment.

Gonna say, he's hardly the most expressive person out there.

I wonder if he'll be pushed away like Gene Roddenberry was from Star Trek when he'd be credited as "Executive Consultant" for the films which usually meant "I had jack shit to do with this movie".

Who knows?

At any rate, Lucas' lack of involvement doesn't necessarily bode well. This is the studio that gave us TRON: LEGACY, which was committed entirely to fanservice and was boring as all get-out.

That's basically what I expect.

Like I've said, I'm curious to see what happens. Any "legacy" the original films had has been flushed down the toilet anyway.

4 billion dollar a FORCE of goodness.

George Lucas is ensuring that the force may be with young Jedis everywhere.

The "Star Wars" director will donate the $4.05 billion he will receive from the sale of Lucasfilm Ltd. to Disney to a foundation focused on education, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

On Tuesday, the Walt Disney Company announced it had paid the huge sum to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd., which produced "Star Wars" and is 100 percent owned by George Lucas himself. Disney also announced plans to release a seventh "Star Wars" film, "Star Wars: Episode VII," in 2015.

“For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company,” Lucas said in a statement on Wednesday. “As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

The director has yet to disclose which charity will be the beneficiary of the huge chunk of money. But Lucas currently serves as the chairman of Edutopia, a foundation that empowers innovative coursework in schools. The organization is a likely choice, eonline.com speculates.

Lucas has made other generous donations to show his commitment to education in the past. In a Giving Pledge letter from 2010, he wrote:

“I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future –- and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.”

1983 interview with Mark Hamill. Around 3:30, Hamill explains that Lucas told him to expect a return to the role Luke Skywalker around 2004:

Well, reports are that Hamill's returning in the new trilogy, so Lucas' original time estimate is only really off by a decade or so.

I fail to see how it could get any worse than "Anakin, you're breaking my heart!!" and "Obi-Wan doesn't believe in me! He's holding me back!" and everything in ATTACK OF THE CLONES.

I think they should bring back Hamill and Fisher (and say Solo died). A trilogy featuring Jacen and Jaina (Han and Leia's twins, maybe with different names), with Jacen turning to the Dark Side as he does in some of the books could actually be good. I mean, the whole journey to the Dark Side done right instead of the crap version with Anakin. And have Luke's son, Ben Skywalker, be the main hero of the trilogy. Perhaps Jacen is already haunted by the (I'd vote for recent) loss of his father. And have Fisher be less a Jedi and more a politician. Maybe a Senator. Sorta cherry pick from the Expanded Universe.

I dunno. That's some of what I'd find interesting to see.

Anyone else betting on seeing Hayden Christensen as Ghost Anakin?

Hell, I bet the footage will be of him being told to look at the camera for a couple of seconds without being told what it's for, just like with the ROTJ insert.

I'm a bit ignorant on the matter, but was there any particular reason why Lucas waited so long before commencing another trilogy?

Prequels? Apparently special effects technology. He got convinced around the time of JURASSIC PARK, I've heard.

I want to see a Prequel Trilogy released 1986/1989/1992 with some old school effects and a better story because he'd be forced to not do everything he'd want.
