Formerly known as HUGO CABARET, this is Scorcese's screen adaptation of Brian Selznick's THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABARET, with a screenplay by BOND 23 scribe - John Logan.
Can't say the trailer does much for me, to be honest. As standard for the last decade, Robert Richardson's cinematography is prosaic, and the imagery ain't much to write home about.
What are your thoughts?
Good thing: No Leonardo DiCaprio.

Meh. Looks like this will be his most disappointing movie since The Departed...

Looks completely mediocre just like most of his recent efforts even though I didn't think Shutter Island was too bad.

Well, this trailer doesn't make me want to see it.
Another great director giving into the 3D fad.

It does generally look rubbish, doesn't it?
Is it time to accept that proper cinema is a dying medium?

Saw the trailer before Harry Potter.
Looks terrible. Sorry, Martin.

I think this looks pretty terrible. Completely without charm. I didn't really think the mixture of Scorsese and kid's flick seemed all that great--has he ever been one to give his movies the sense of warmth or whimsy you expect for a children's story?--and that trailer confirms it. He's completely out of his depth. It looks like Scorsese desperately trying and failing to be Spielberg.
Somebody needs to get Scorsese back making a project he really needs to fight for. It seems like the majority of his passion projects are done and he's just coasting.

``````yup. Said it before, but: 19th century - the novel 20th century - the movie 21st century - the end
Get it while it's hot, folks.
I hope this will be better than some of the crappy book to film adaptations we gotten lately like:
The Last Airbender
and
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Well, this is a passion project to some degree - it's a kid's film sure, but it's one that is specifically about film preservation, and proper recognition for forgotten artists, things that have been close to Scorsese's heart for a long time. Also, there's a very very good reason for it to be in 3D. Not an arbitrary choice at all.
That being said, the trailers don't inspire. But then we've entered a dark age where Jared Leto is providing the soundtrack to a preview for a Scorsese film.
Aside from MEAN STREETS, TAXI DRIVER, and THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and maybe, just maybe RAGING BULL, there's a very very very good reason for Scorcese to be one of those forgotten artists in the future. I think this film holds a subconscious message.
You're writing off a number of pretty good flicks there, Sharky. The films you mention are the big 'uns, but Scorsese's run isn't just those four films and a bunch of turkeys.
In my book it is. Scorcese's collected filmography is as overrated as Coppola's.
I quite enjoy THE KING OF COMEDY and AFTER HOURS. And BRINGING OUT THE DEAD is a more interesting film than most.
Sharky wrote:
Is Coppola's filmography that highly rated? Most commentators tend to think he stopped being any good after APOCALYPSE NOW. Which, frankly, isn't far from the truth, though I am quite fond of YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH and TETRO.
In that case, I'm sure Scorsese will be more than happy to be as forgotten as Georges Melies.
Yes, but that's an oxymoron ain't it? Georges Melles's cinema is anything but forgotten, even if few know his name.
HUGO has been receiving very strong reviews., though of course Sharky's prophet, Armond White, breaks with the trend and finds it to be another in a long string of Scorsese disappointments.
I'll be choosing between seeing HUGO and THE MUPPETS this weekend. I may see HUGO over THE MUPPETS because I suspect it will be the more interesting film, for better or worse.
Hugo's detractors seem to more commonly accuse the film of being a lecture rather than an adventure. Which isn't... hugely surprising, given the source material.
Based on reviews, can't really go wrong this weekend. Though I can only vouch for "The Muppets," it's nice to see what appears to be legitimately solid good-hearted flicks out this weekend.
HUGO is a peculiar little film. For a great deal of its running time, it's ersatz Jeunet (Scorsese doesn't do whimsy all that well), but there are moments where the film overcomes the trite script and awkward performances (Chloe Moretz is dreadful here, and Sascha Baron Cohen is irritating as all get out) and grasps at something worthwhile. While, like the other Scorsese films of the decade, HUGO is a bit of a mess, it's easier to forgive HUGO's inadequacies than, say, GANGS OF NEW YORK, due to HUGO's lighter touch.
3-D, once again, is little more than a gimmick, but the gimmickry of 3-D does seem fitting for a film that is all about George Melies, whose films were rather gimmicky, too. Scorsese does more elegant work with it than any other filmmaker I've seen. I don't think HUGO would work nearly as well in good ol' 2-D.
I read the book, and found it disappointing. It moves from cartoon storytelling via pictures (beautifully drawn) to narrative. Which isn't itself a problem. I just found the story a bit empty and dull. I can't see there being enough plot there to hang a film on.
