I can only think of 2...The Changeling from 1979 thereabouts and The Shining (the Jack Nicholson original, not ABC tv shit)...
Any others that are really creepy? Something that really makes you feel awkward when alone...
I'll admit when I'm feeling spooked I bring in my original ghost detector...Zarbo, my 1 yr old Rottie. And if you have a cat who suddenly stops licking herself and fixes her eyes on something that seems to be moving across the room, while you can't see a fucking thing...your ass is haunted.

Honestly, the only two horror movies that ever kept me up at night were The Exorcist and the first Paranormal Activity. The "all work and no play" scene from The Shining and the ending scene of Ian Hendry and Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion were pretty unsettling, too, but other than those...not much has gotten to me in horror flicks.

The original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is genuinely disturbing.

Yeah, I gotta agree with Brown on this one.
Horror movies really depend on the mood of the room for me. Comedies too. Both depend a lot on timing and emotion.

Peter Greenaway disgusts me in general. I'm still waiting for him to die.

The Omen kept me awake the entire night I saw it. This would have been when I was 11 or 12. I'd be interested to see what effect it would have on me today.
Blair Witch Project was quite disturbing. So was Open Water. And I thought Exorcist III was pretty creepy.
But two of the most repellent flicks I've seen were not even horror films: A Clockwork Orange and Dangerous Liaisons.

KILL LIST.
In his review of the film on BBC radio, Mark Kermode puts it perfectly when he says that KILL LIST "does for horror what Shane Meadows did for the revenge drama with DEAD MAN'S SHOES. I mean, to say that it's a claustrophobic drama is to understate just how much you feel trapped within it as the action escalates. Effectively, what happens is, you sit there watching the film thinking: this is about to explode, it's about to go off in ways which feel really uncomfortable. Some horror films try to terrify you, some horror films try to repulse you, some horror films try to shock you. The primary register of KILL LIST is to make you feel extremely uncomfortable and it does it with real efficiency. ... KILL LIST is a perfect example of one of those films where you'd be very hard pressed to say what individual element of it that it was that was making you feel quite so uncomfortable, but it does it really efficiently. I mean, there is some, you know, graphic display in it, and some of the dialogue is very, very aggressive, but its primary register is this feeling of brooding, closing-in threat mixed with this sort of social realism which gives it the whole thing a really uncomfortable kitchen sink air to it, and you do genuinely buy into the drama in a way that, as things start to take a more outrageous turn, you are completely involved in it. I was genuinely wrung-out by it."

Yep, that's a good 'un.
Others from the past few years: THE CHASER, EDEN LAKE and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.
And an honourable mention for F as one of the worst horror films in recent memory.

Have any of you seen Don't Look Now? I want to, but the misses fears it would ruin Venice for her.

Don't Look Now is a well-made, adult, and rather sad film, revolving around a couple who lose their daughter.
I'd say it's unsettling rather than horrific. It certainly wouldn't spoil anyone's visit to Venice, though it may make you think twice before wandering down some of its ancient backstreets. Definitely wellworth seeing, it features a beautiful score by Pino Donnagio. Nic Roeg's direction was an obvious influence on Brian De Palma as well.

The horror films that do actually give me a chill are those that deal with the demonic, notably The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the recent Anthony Hopkins film The Rite. In The Rite, when the Priest (Hopkins) finally gets the demon to reveal its name, "I am Baal", I thought a cold chill had wafted through the theatre. Everyone seemed very spooked walking out. From a biblical perspective, demons are quite real, whereas Dracula etc can be dismissed as fictional even if quite scary.
The original Halloween film by John Carpenter was quite creepy as well. The killer seemed to be demonically possessed.

I don't understand. A Judeo-Christian bible perspective then but doesn't that go without saying?
Eg. The Torah is Jewish. The Old Testament is both a Jewish and Christian book while the New Testament is decidedly Christian.
The Koran is Muslim . The book of Mormon is Mormon etc

Very shocking ending, but I wouldn't say it gave me the creeps.
The scene that had a shock value that resonated with me for the longest is the one in "Henry, portrait of a serial killer" where they watched their recording of the family they murdered.

It was also a very obvious influence on Fien Troch's "Unspoken", right down to the color of the jacket of the girl that haunts the dad.

More "progressive" constructions of Christian theology sometimes deny the existence of demonic powers. I suppose they find the idea quaint and hokey.

I can see dismissing demons as "quaint and hokey" in the present, but I don't see how one could deny that they were a very real part of the Christian worldview and theology as it was literally depicted in the Bible. I mean, it's right--or should I say 'rite"--there in black in white.

Which is precisely by those conceptions of Christianity with a higher regard for the Bible and historical tradition maintain that belief.

Angels and demons are quite real. There is far more to reality than what we can actually see.
The evil that torments men's souls does have a source.
That's why demonic possession movies ( the intelligent ones that is) do spook me.
