Aching to check out The Goodfellas, The Aviator, Hugo and Shutter Island.

Why are you only watching his most recent films, oh yoof? They're all pale shadows of what he did before.

Well, CASINO (if indeed we're calling it "recent") is as good as anything Scorsese has ever done. Although it's true that he's been on pretty awful form for the past few years.

"THE GOODFELLAS" is probably his best film (followed, I guess, by RAGING BULL).

I beg to differ, Sir!

Scorsese's best film (that he directed) is still and will always be Taxi Driver

GOODFELLAS and CASINO are his best?

Rubbish. Third tier Scorcese pics at the most. Soulless, amoral films glamourising the mob. The template for shit like THE SOPRANOS.

Out of his later works, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST rules supreme.

Considering two of my favourite films are A Streetcar Named Desire and Casablanca, a movie being in black and white doesn't disconcert me.

Absolutely.

The last time Scorsese was interesting, however, was BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, an underrated entry in the Scorsese canon.

I enjoy THE TAXI DRIVER quite a bit.

On the mob movie front, one of the worst is De Palma's Wise Guys.

DP must have had an ex-wife to pay off.

What would you say is De Palma's worst film? My money's on REDACTED, though I know MISSION TO MARS gets a lot of flack around here.

Well, the rentacrowd say The Black Dahlia, but I think that's the best thing he's done for 15 years. Not that that's saying much, mind you.

Wise Guys is the worst DP for me. It's his least personal film.

With CASINO, I love the first 20 minutes. Then it's... hit and miss for me.

With DAHLIA, I like it one time, the I don't like it the next, then I like it the next viewing, and so on.

So I was watching my little sisters tonight and had sit through most of JUDY MOODY AND THE NOT BUMMER SUMMER. Kill me now.

It did have Heather Graham, who I'd like ****. I didn't mention that to the kids.

And it has the Steve Urkel guy, who's starting to look like a young Bill Cosby. So if they end up making THE BILL COSBY STORY.

This Judy Moody film sounds madeup. Title alone. Bummer.

Indeed who wouldn't want to asterix Ms Heather. :) Ah, the 90's.

Harms likes his Beethoven busts shaved. Mine just watches disapprovingly as I wank.

Bloody things.

Breaking The Waves

I've waited for years to watch this, and I had expected it to be a phoney film, but surprisingly it is the very opposite. Writing, direction and acting are all very good. We observe a great female character through this emotional journey. Her conversations with God and their seeming impact on the course of her life are neatly thought out and presented. The whole film feels genuine. I also liked the intermissions with the colourful paintings (partly moved) and the songs announcing the different acts. Nice to hear Jethro and Purple.
In the end it seems that God approves of what Bess has done for her husband. ;) (Perhaps he doesn't so with respect to the church-going folk, because they (on their own behalf) do not receive the honour of the bells ringing).

Scorsesese?
His best films are TAXI DRIVER, MEAN STREETS, THE KING OF COMEDY and THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST.
BULL is decent, but overrated. CASINO pissed me off the second time I watched it (I may have written sth. diff., but that's more like I really felt towards it); generic and overly brutal. THE AV. is also way overrated, though I can live with its first two thirds (just about). I still find DEP. rather funny, but I haven't watched it in some time.
70s & 80s clearly his prime.

Everything Donovan touches turns to shit, though with BREAKING THE WEAVES Von Trier had already done the devil's work.

No one gets a better female performance than Von Trier. Well ,maybe Simon Lindsay Honey.
