big laugh

I think you'd like THE SHOOTING, Ambler.

The style is like a combination of Siegel, Ford and Leone. (More bitter dead fucks.)

Keep meaning to see it. I think Oppers mentioned it a few years ago when I rather crassly confused it with Siegel's The Shootist.

I remember it as a darker, grimmer, more perverse version of "Comanche Station" myself.

Splurged and bought some Criterion titles during their half-off sale last week.

I don't buy Blu-Rays often, but figured these were worth owning:

DRESSED TO KILL (Looking forward to seeing the new De Palma/Baumbach interview)
BLACK NARCISSUS
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (Last saw this in the theater, introduced by Scorsese and Schoonmaker)
THE 39 STEPS
FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT

I don't have a blu-ray player but Colonel Blimp is one of those films that deserves it. Those colours must be so vivid. That and the film is a masterpiece. Never fails to stir.

I'll always purchase Criterion's Powell & Pressburger films, as long as they keep releasing them.

They do great work with the restorations. THE RED SHOES looks incredible.

I wish they'd release A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, rather than these fucking Lena Dunham films.

Odd, I've have thought Matter of Life and Death would have come before Blimp in terms of release (or, Stairway to Heaven as it's US title was).

I'm still murky on this Lena Dunham. Kept thinking something to do with baseball but alas, film titles and comediennes have somehow muddied.

MGM's "Alfred Hitchcock: The Classic Collection" Blu-ray
Includes: "Rebecca", "Notorious" and "Spellbound"

A lot of people whined about the grain in this set. I don't get it. These were shot on film. Criterion's Hitchcock releases have the same amount of grain. The transfers are great.

Overall, a nice set. "Spellbound" is the weakest of the batch, but it's nice to see it get the high definition treatment.

I'll go out of my way to buy Criterion's "Notorious" if they ever bother releasing it on Blu-Ray.

I waited to see if that would happen but I don't think Criterion will revisit those three films, since they went out of print MGM had been making use of them through reissue DVDs and now blu-ray.

I still have those three Criterion DVDs saved. Lots of good bonus material that didn't make it to the MGM releases.

Just received my Blu-Ray copy of Code 7, Victim 5 (1964).

It has probably been more than a decade since I last watched this film. I've owned the only DVD copy available from the early 2000s, but it was very low quality, no remastering or clean up. I haven't had the chance to watch the Blu-Ray yet, but I popped it in and it is a huge increase in quality. They did a very good job remastering the film. I'm thrilled I finally own a decent print of it. The blu-ray also came with another film Mozambique. Don't know anything about it, but I'm assuming it is something in a similar vein.

Yeah, it's a generic spy/detective type film but I enjoy i a lott. Made in 1964 you can definitely see and feel the pre-GF Bond influence (especially Dr. No) in tone and location. Looking forward to viewing this one again this weekend.

The Lego Batman Movie ... maybe it's a comment on the current state of movie comedies for 'adults', my geekiness or at the age of 46 I need to grow the fuck up but this was easily 2017's funniest film for me.

And easily the most entertaining flick with Bats in it since the last of Nolan's trilogy.

DVDs are now so cheap in England I've exhumed my player from the garage. Got this lot for £25 yesterday - they might well be crap, but at that price I'm not complaining. Look - no comic books!

The Affair boxset
Broadwalk Empire boxset (I've only seen S1 previously)
Californication boxset (already have this, but a shoddy knockoff I bought last time I was in Asia)
The Sweeney boxset
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
Episodes S1 and S2; duff Showtime comedy for which I have an inexplicable fondness.

"Boardwalk Empire" season two is still great TV.
It's really only from season three onward that the decline sets in.
I won't spoil anything by revealing why exactly.
I never got past season two of "Californication". Not that I didn't like it, but I found it a bit too repetitive.
