I wish I could make a version of TOTAL RECALL, starring someone like Giovanni Ribisi as a nebbish accountant living out an OTT James Bond fantasy. Not that I as a filmmaker would in any way completely and totally relate to that.

Arnold was always wrong for it. He's ALREADY an action hero. Arnold can't play someone who ISN'T an action hero. Colin Farrell is manly enough to be in a similar enough position to where it's just another action flick with nothing special about it.

I've never though Total Recall was so good it couldn't be remade, but so far nothing that I've seen from this remake makes me believe it was a good idea worth spending money on. Incidentally, Patrick Swayze was originally the lead actor in Total Recall back in 1987, but the studio shut down production because they ran out of money. Arnold bought the rights to the film and made it himself, after having been told, IIRC, a few years earlier that he was all wrong for the part by the original director and studio.

I agree that Verhoeven's film wasn't above being remade. I really don't think it worked as well as it could have because Arnold is so wrong for it.

Swayze wouldn't be right either. Richard Dreyfuss would have been great.

My problem isn't that it's being remade, but rather the way they're going about it. It's just a variation of the 1990 film but with emphasis on "dark n gritty", meaning no color, humor, fun, ect. It's like the completely lost the point of the Verhoeven flick. I rather they just go back to the source and make a new spin on that, and title it something else.

But no, that's risky.

The reviews must be very bad. Normally Rotten Tomatoes has reviews starting to pour in by Tuesday of the week a movie is being released, but so far they have nothing about Total Recall. Twitch Film's website had a review of the film up on their site, but now it has been taken down.

If the film has been previewed for critics there may be an "embargo" on media outlets dictating to them when they can release their reviews to be read, of which Twitch might have been in violation. I"m not even sure SONY has previewed it for critics; wouldn't be surprising if they tried to sneak this one into the theater without a press screening.

Unfortunately, the only thing that really matters to execs in this slew of remakes is using the old name/brand again.

Having seen Wiseman's first three films I can safely say that this guy is the epitome of NFI. His idea of cinema is a billowing trenchcoat.

Maybe he's a genius and incoherency is his game, though. I dunno.

Even Jessica and Kate together in the same film won't make me run to theater to see this recycled crapfest.

I'll wait for the DVD.

Currently sitting at a 32% on the Freshness meter at RottenTomatoes.com

Also expected to lose to THE DARK KNIGHT RISES this weekend by at least $10 million.

http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/first-box-office-total-recall-and-dark-knight-rises-neck-and-neck-for-1-wimpy-kid-3-holding-its-own/

I had voted for $20-29 million opening weekend and I nailed it: looks like a total 3-day haul of only $26.5 million.

The most intriguing and enticing thing I have read on the movie is that apparently at one point Beckingsale uses her crotch to knock out her adversary.......what a way to go!

How does she knock them out using her crotch? Did they get a whiff of it and it wasn't "daisy fresh"? Or did she slam someone's ahead against it?

I like Biel and Beckinsale alright; I'm sure I'll watch the film when it hits RedBox. But I feel there wasn't enough of a contrast in hiring these two actresses. They look almost identical on the posters and in the clips. Would've preferred to see Biel as Lori and someone else hired as Melina.

Spoilery no doubt, but there's a rather amusing comparison of what seems to amount to inept descisions in the final theatrical cut....and of course the prospect of a 17 minute extended length directors cut for the blu ray yet to come.

Saw the trailer the other day. Looks horrible. But the thing that pisses me off the most about this movie (and also the original) is way people pronounce its title.

I mean, since when has the word "recall" been pronounced "ree-call"? You say, for example, "I don't recall when I first met him", and not "I don't ree-call when I first met him."

My wife wants to see this movie (and that noisy thing called Dark Loser Rising or something).

I told her she is welcome to go see it with her parents.

Oh thank the gods, it's not just me.

To "re-call" is to call manufactured goods back to the manufacturer for repair and/or replacement. Just hearing "Total Re-Call" makes me not want to see the damn film. It's also why I couldn't stand the original. Plus it's in no way as good as "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale".
