The master of the absurdly-overblown blockbuster, Roland Emmerich, takes on Shakespeare with an overblown conspiracy story, and he's brought a cast of respected thespians on board. I hope the film is as entertainingly preposterous as this trailer makes it out to be.

The conspiracy theory is pretty well debunked.

I think the title is describing the film's direction.

Theres always that famous Christopher Marlowe story... but this seems a bit too "epic" to be depicting that.

Y'know, I'm gonna go against the cynicism wave in this thread and say this looks pretty good. I have literally NEVER liked a Roland Emmerlich film, but this looks good. It may just be because I support the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship, and this is the first time I've seen that theory expressed on film. (Which is the idea that the true author of the Shakespeare plays was the Earl of Oxford). It's certainly a more plausible alternate history theory than the insipid "Shakespeare in Love". Now there's a movie that deserves a "how the hell did that win Best Picture?".

Too much CGI/10
...I still love Independence Day, though.

I am currently watching this.
So back then if you wrote a play that the Nobles, Lords, Monarchs and King and Queen didn't approve of, you get arrested and tortured and thrown into the Tower?
Those British sure were uncivilized back in those days!

If only England could be more like Italy, founded a whopping 150 years ago.

that may be true but we have a long history of diverse people and culture going back almost 200,000 years.
Furthermore, just like Greece, Rome and the Roman empire influenced and contributed many things to latter countries and cultures and government and civilizations including the British Empire and the U.S.
Let's also not forget the Romans conquering and colonizing the disorganized, then barbaric Brits for almost 470 years.

I know Amercans like to think big but earlier than the early Egyptians gets to be the longest in recorded culture/history we really get to, before that is a rather large blank canvas. So going back 15.000 - 20.000 years would be tops.
However it is said that the Neanthertaler culture was great in plays, music and or humor. :*p*:

I did a quick google and still did not come up with 200.000 years:
The Agricultural Revolution, beginning about 8,000 BCE, saw the development of agriculture. Farming permitted far denser populations, which in time organised into states. Agriculture also created food surpluses that could support people not directly engaged in food production. The development of agriculture permitted the creation of the first cities. These were centres of trade, manufacturing and political power with nearly no agricultural production of their own. Cities established a symbiosis with their surrounding countrysides, absorbing agricultural products and providing, in return, manufactured goods and varying degrees of military control and protection.[
The development of cities was synonymous with the rise of civilization. Early civilizations arose first in lower Mesopotamia (3500 BCE), followed by Egyptian civilization along the Nile (3300 BCE) and Harappan civilization in the Indus Valley (3300 BCE). Elaborate cities grew up, with high levels of social and economic complexity. Each of these civilizations was so different from the others that they almost certainly originated independently. Writing and extensive trade developed to meet the needs of cities. :*d*:
