PostSubject: How Did You Become a James Bond Fanatic?   Tue Jul 03, 2012 1:40 am

My experience is quite an interesting one. It all began back in 2000 when I was just six-years-old when I was on holiday with my family renting a cottage in Wales and 'Diamonds Are Forever' was on television that night, aa much as I enjoyed it and found it entertaining, it was nothing special and did not persuade me to persue an interest in James Bond. The following year my older brother was bought 'Tomorrow Never Dies' on video as a birthday present, he watched it over and over again with his friends and so there was no real avoiding of it, again, like DAF, I found it enjoyable and entertaining enough but it was nothing special and did not persuade me to persue an interest in James Bond. Finally, that Christmas, my brother was bought another Bond film on video, this time it was 'GoldenEye', I was originally not expecting much but more of the same but this Bond was different, better than the other two, and from then on I was hooked.

Now lets all please share how the madness began laugh

From the first time I saw a Bond film--probably LALD or GF on the boob toob back in '74--I think I was a latent Bondhead. But it was not until November 2004, at the age of 37, that the transformation took place in earnest. I began watching a Thanksgiving Bondathon (I suspect it was on Spike), signed on with MI6 around noon on November 27, and since then James Bond and his world have been an obsession. I wish I could figure out how to convert the obsession into gold.

I had wanted to see FYEO the summer it came out in theaters, but my parents thought I was too young for the movie (I was 10). I had heard that the movie featured some sort of motorcycle with spikes on the tires and some of my friends were telling me about the movie (I guess they saw it, or were pretending to see it). To plead my case that I should be allowed to see it, I told my parents I'd already seen "Spy vs. Spy" (confusing the comic strip in Mad Magazine with The Spy Who Loved Me).

Oddly enough, they seemed to feel that 12 years old was an appropriate age to go see a movie called OCTOPUSSY, so go figure. And from that point on I was a huge Bond fan and never looked back. Immediately joined the American and British fan clubs of the time and started collecting loads o'crap.

I guess if STAR WARS had continued on past ROTJ in 1986 maybe I would have been diverted and became a sci-fi/sci-fantasy geek, but I guess I came into the Star Wars craze right as it was trailing off. And by allowing me to get interested in James Bond early on I essentially did not end up caring for some of the more violent action films of the time, such as anything with Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Lundgren, Dudikoff, etc... (though Predator and Die Hard rank among my favorite films). Because I "grew up" on the sophistication and the more subtle types of humor and action found in the Bond films, the violent action flicks didn't hold as much appeal. I found Roger Moore trying to save his manhood by shooting the knob off the end of a staircase railing in OCTOPUSSY far more interesting than what was going on in other action flicks. In fact, I found the action sequences in the Bond films more complex and fascinating than the standard shoot 'em-up or hand-to-hand combat sequences in the other contemporary action films.

Maybe watching the films a lot as a kid. Early 90s, Octopussy maybe being the first on a showing in 1992 when I was on holiday in Bournemouth. The rest just seemed to fall into place. That's twenty years. Not too bad I guess.

My brother was a Bond fan before me, but he lost interest with the end of Connery's run, so I went and saw DAF on my own at the tender age of 12. I suppose I found Bond a more-than adequate replacement for the recently-cancelled Batman TV series, and Blofeld's satellite-contolling computer bank was reminiscent of the control room of the Time Tunnel. And that Mustang chase! And Jill St. John!

By the time LALD came out I'd caught up with all the previous entries in retrospectives at the same theatre. I was perfectly happy to accept Roger Moore as Bond - just keep 'em coming! I started reading the books in 1973 and had yet another top-notch Bond experience.

At that time, with my limited resources and contacts, all I could collect were the soundtracks and a few paperback editions. I found out about buying posters in 1981, ordering HC reprints in 85, and finally got a VCR in 1989 (my reward for shifting my obsessive nature towards finishing my BA degree).

As for PK's wish to be able to turn our obsession into gold, I have parlayed my encyclopaedic memory for trivia into premiere tickets whenever a local radio station holds a contest.

The gap between TMWTGG and TSWLM was bad enough, but those six years between LTK & GE were killer! And now these constant four year gaps! A guy can get old waiting for the next installment. Let's hope MGM/EON can stay on schedule from now on.

You've got quite a history with Bond, AMC. DAF on the big screen at 12, eh? My cousin went to see DAF at the age of seven and it scared him so badly he fled the theater.

A coupla years later his mom took him to see the Exorcist.

I remember when I was about 5 or 6, my uncle bought me the entire Bond collection on VHS. Used to spend hours on hours mowing through them. 'Round 12-13 I eventually just got bored of it, went off Bond for a few years, then for some reason I decided to re-watch the Connery flicks. Then I found the old MI6 forums and I've been a Bond nut ever since.

My Bond experience pretty much parallels AMC's. I saw DAF on the big screen, as a 12 year-old, on a double bill with Sidney Poitier's, The Organization (an urban police drama) as the opener, and was blown away. I'd been bugging my dad to take us, because the trailers on TV looked so cool. It was obsession-city after that. By the time LALD came out I'd managed to see everything else in cinema but for DN, which I didn't get to see properly on the big screen until last year at a local digital film-fest. I didn't even manage to see it at all, until about 1982 at a Bond-fest which played all the films, on a small multiplex screen, on Sunday nights, until they'd run through them all.

I must say though, as life-changing an experience as DAF was, my next cinema experience of Bond, only a few weeks later, was even more awe-inspiring; a big-screen double-bill of TB and YOLT. It took about two weeks I think, to return to reality. I was completely lost in the world of Bond and Blofeld and Spectre. Next up a double-dip of FRWL and GF ( DN was actually on the bill as well, making a triple feature, but I didn't arrive in time to see it) and then OHMSS eventually came around on a double-bill with DAF. OHMSS with some other guy as Bond?! Why I wondered, but whatever his name was, was an adequate stand-in, I thought. The film was still Bond-gold, with Blofeld, cat and Spectre all intact.

I managed to get all the books read by roughly the cinema release of TMWTGG. First book I read was YOLT which I bummed from a neighbor, whose parents had it lying around ( I still have it  ) What goes around. comes around though. A fellow Bond-fan at university borrowed my TMWTGG and TSWLM lp soundtracks, and still has them. They are long gone. Too bad, those lps would be great collectibles now.

My first experience with Bond though, would have been with a Bond board-game, that I got as a prize at a children's Christmas Party. I remember at the time thinking a Man From Uncle game would have been better. :pale: But I didn't know much about either secret-agent at the time. Man From Uncle seemed cooler.

As for making money, my Bond expertise landed me $250.00 recently. A guy was looking for a Bond consultant. He posted on the Mi6 board late last year. Everyone else mocked him, but I thought he sounded legit. I pm'd him and we struck a deal. Got a cheque in the mail, for a few hours work compiling Bond-film research, that he needed for a Bond-themed, direct marketing plan he was putting together.

Yep that looks like it. Where would you find that old game these days? Mine is long gone, like my old hockey cards, which would now be worth a small fortune.

It would be real interesting if everyone contributed to this thread.

Of particular interest maybe list the two items below in bold, at the top of your post before expanding with the broader story.

Item 1: First Bond film that you viewed, in any format, TV, cinema, vhs, dvd, download, whatever --and that you were actually able to appreciate, as opposed to being 5 years old and watching it with a big dopey grin on your face.

Item 2: first Bond film that you actually saw in cinema, and if different, first Bond film that you saw in cinema in opening-release

===

For me: item one is DAF, in cinema re-release

item 2: first Bond film in cinema was DAF of course, but first opening-release Bond was LALD.

Who could have been a better role model than James Bond to a kid who was entering puberty? He fucked gorgeous women, smoked, drank, gambled, and had style. After seeing the Dalton and Connery films, I moved onto Barry's music, the novels, and then it was downhill from there.

Edit:

Item 1: LICENCE TO KILL on TBS (TV) at age 12

Item 2: DIE ANOTHER DAY, and CASINO ROYALE on opening day

First Bond film I ever watched was TOMORROW NEVER DIES at age 11 in early 1998. That bored me out of my god damn skull.

I watch THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH when it came out on VHS. Thought it was okay, but did not make me eager to revisit Bond films.

Finally in Summer 2000 I played the GOLDENEYE video game. That didn't make me a fanatic, but it got me more interesting seeing Bond films than the previous two Brosnan films I watched. That speaks volumes.

I'd say I became a fanatic in New Years 2004. I rented FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE on DVD for the first time and was absolutely drawn in all the way. That was the moment I went from being a casual fan to a fanatic.

Item 1: Saw MR at the cinema in '79 at a big, beautiful theater that was demolished a dozen years ago. To my knowledge, this is the first Bond film I saw in its entirety.

Item 2: CR was the first Bond film I saw on opening night. Still have the ticket stub.

Item 1: After I had watched bits of the Connery and Moore films on ITV's Sunday afternoon showings, my family rented VHS copies of most of the films from the local library, and bought some others (think it was from the 1998 post-TND collection).

Item 2: Saw DAD in the cinema twice. Enjoyed it at the time, and still do to some extent.

Somewhat similar experience to AMC Hornet for me, it was my Brother who was a big fan of the Connery films took me to see the touring double bills around the time of LALD debut, he also brought me the soundtracks so I have him to thank for both my interest in Bond and film music. He really didnt like Moore's take on the role however, I read the books and started a scrapbook collecting film reviews (sadly and consistently using too much paste, but I retain the now highly flammable and sadly unreadable material to this day)!

I saw GOLDFINGER in the cinema before I was 4 years old, so that definitely left its mark on me.

As for consciously getting into Bond, I think coming across the golf game in GF on TV in the early 70s was the real eyeopener. I'd seen a half-dozen of the films in the theater and loved them, but the GF TV experience - I was about 13 -- just clicked it all into place. I went out and bought John Pearson's bio of 007, read that before any Fleming, then went through all the Fleming very quickly.

I'm one of the lame-os that got into James Bond thanks to the Goldeneye N64 game.

First Bond movie I watched was NSNA. That could've ended badly. Saw GE & TND not long afterwards and then eventually watched a good chunk of the classics when Channel 10 was having a marathon.

Took the liberty of editing my answer into your post Tiff.

TWINE was the first alas in our brand spanking new cinema. Overpriced peanuts was all I could afford tragically. Still remember everyone groaning at the "The World Is Not Enough" line and doing so over Bond's: "Family motto" explanation.

TWINE, DAD, CR (twice) and QOS with OHMSS between the Craig Bond's at the BFI two years ago.

Yeah, first-run. I don't think people have any business bringing a preschooler to a movie with an electrocution and all the rest, but even so I'm very glad to have that image of gilded Shirley Eaton burnished in memory -- kinda offsets the other thing I remember from being very small, watching the JFK funeral.

At least you still have your scrapbook. I lent mine (DAF-TMWTGG) to my brother and never saw it again. He didn't keep it, he just 'lost track' of it somehow.

Do you think I ever lent him anything again?

Please do. Anyone with mod abilities, please feel free to update-edit the original list. As well anyone with better list formatting skills, please do dive right in too.

I find this list interesting, as I suspect most of the Bond films do have the power to launch new fans into obsessive Bondom, especially a new cinema release. Likewise, new fans also come to Bondaholism, thru exposure to the old films in their various formats.
