My Dad once met a Richard Head at a work conference.

The sprinter Tyson Gay ... man, must've been tough growing up with that surname.

How else do you think he got so fast?

I think it can be excused, since it's a Gaelic name. It's a bit like "Niamh", which is pronounced "neev".

Whatever. I still don't like the name.

They live in QL. I'm in Victoria. Someone up there can sort 'em out.

Yeah, but born in Melbourne. They only moved up because the warmer weather helped with this medical condition she developed.

Otherwise, I'd agree with you! tongue

But at least it's a proper name. Considering the Gaelic alphabet doesn't possess a 'J' or a 'V' - amongst others - it also makes perfect sense. If you read and/or speak Gaelic. And when 'Featherstonehaugh' is pronounced 'Fanshaw', and St. John 'Sinjun', I really don't think English speakers have any right in complaining about it.

I'm not complaining about it. I just don't like the name, which is okay in a thread about worst names on an internet forum which permits one's opinion. ;)

Yeah, but I'm not sure 'not liking the name' is the same as a 'worst name'. There's a few names I don't like, either because of unpleasant associations (which isn't very fair to the innocent, I know, but them's the breaks!) or just because I don't like the sound or 'feel' of the name when you say it (like the name 'Julie' - it just sounds harsh to my ears - and it happens to be my sister's name but that's purely coincidental ;) ) But someone willfully naming themselves or their children something stupid sort of transcends personal taste.

I have met Ivor Goodliffe, and more than one James Bond. But naming your child Zuz somehow seems a lot worse than being merely amusing.

There is a running back at Texas A&M University named Christine (pronounced Kristen) Michael. Why was he given a girl's name, you ask. According to what I've heard, his mom wanted a girl rather than a boy, and decided that if she couldn't have a girl at least she could have a boy with a girl's name.

Social services should have intervened and asked a family court judge to block legally naming the kid Christine. American courts have done it before when some families tried to name their child "Osama Bin Laden" and "Satan" and a judge said "No".

Well now, Gravy, we wouldn't want to inhibit Christine from discovering his inner woman now would we? Likewise, such a ban would imply official disapproval of the "transgendered community," and that's right out.

There is just such a law in the Canadian province of Quebec. The government can veto any name they don't like, which many people complain about.

Nobody seems to mind the practice of giving girls boys' names, though:

Michael Learned, Christopher Norris, Glenn Close, Daryl Hannah, Cameron Diaz, etc.

I'm not wild about giving the government that particular authority either.

there was this child in the supermarket yesterday running about, eventually mother turns and cries out: "No, Zachariah!"

anyway, a name that might not be the worst but who knows leaps out from the Boston Legal credits - Dakota Sky.

Zachariah's a decent Biblical name, but best just abbreviated to Zach.

John Wayne (born Marion Morrison) was a big macho man with a rather girly name too. But I bet nobody told him that to his face. 8)

I am reminded of a character in 'Elvira - Mistress of the Dark':

Chastity Pariah

Neither Fleming nor anyone at EON ever came up with anything that obvious (although Holly Goodhead comes close).

I think back in those days Marion was a name--like Pat--that was somewhat androgynous. There was a pro football Hall of Famer, born 13 years after John Wayne, named Marion Motley.

as William Hartnell once said, "Golightly, what's in a name?"

but heck...that's quite the name indeed.
