Some great choices there. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and POINT BLANK, as long as the theatre didn't have sniffer dogs.

Earthquake with the Sensurround Sound in 70mm!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071455/

I remember my parents and their friends talking about this movie after they saw it on the big screen in Italy.

the Universal DVD release of this movie is crap!!

Dolby 1.0 with the Sensurround Sound bass buried and lowered!!

Even with a good home theater system, you wouldn't be able to reproduce the sensation of an earthquake at home,

not unless you have a home theater system that puts out at least 2000 Watts!

I got a chance to see that one back in 2003 when the studio was releasing it to the theaters to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the movie (starting with its production date back in 1978).

I'd like to see MOONRAKER and ALIENS on the big screen (was too young to see either when they came out).

I saw ALIEN in the movie theater in 1979.

My brother and I asked Mom to take us to see it.

She asked us what kind of movie is it and we told her: "It's like Star Wars but we can't get in without an adult with us."

Needless to say, that was the only time Mom ever took us to see a Horror movie.

Then 3 years later, I talked my Dad into taking me to see John Carpenter's The Thing.

Both Mom an Dad will tell you ALIEN and The Thing are 2 of the most disgusting movies they'd ever seen!

Yet it's also strange that there are rated R and NC-17 movies that I was able to get in when I wasn't 17 yet:

Caligula, The Warriors, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Porky's.

I think its a tie between Close Encounters & Blade Runner for the film I watched most times at the cinema (6 or 7 visits).....they are awesome in any form but with these it always seems a case of the bigger the screen the more incredible the experience.

a few of David Lean's like Lawrence or River Kwai

Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

and for sheer popcorn, Airport.

Saw that five years back at an event where Meyer spoke. It's actually playing in a couple weeks in a cinema down the street from me.

What would I like to see?

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST for sure.

I've seen VERTIGO on the big screen, but I wouldn't mind doing that again. Plus REAR WINDOW, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, PSYCHO, and THE BIRDS.

I guess the correct answer is really "everything".

With the demise of film prints, I've somewhat lost interest in seeing films on the big screen. Digital projection just doesn't do it for me.

I wish I could see Anderson's THE MASTER in 70mm (it's being shown that way in a few select venues), since it's likely the last new film we'll ever see in that format.

Films I'd love to see on the big screen AGAIN:

2001 (almost two dozen in theater viewings, but the only time I've been able to see it in a cinema since catching a couple of 70mm showings in 1989 was in 2004 and in 35mm ... print was very colorful but even so ... not-the-same!)
APOCALYPSE NOW
ALL THAT JAZZ
FRWL through OHMSS
CE3K
CITIZEN KANE
DR STRANGELOVE
Altered States
Touch of Evil
first hour of Star Trek the motion picture (well all right, the whole thing)
Blade Runner
Zardoz
Looking for Mr Goodbar
The Wild Bunch
The Wild Geese
edit addon: EARTHQUAKE - yeah, it was really cool, I saw it in full sensurround twice, and sensurround never worked as well for ROLLERCOASTER or GALACTICA or MIDWAY - I know, I suffered through them all.

Films I've not yet seen on the big screen, but really want to:
All of the Leone westerns
Larry o' Arabia
Blue Thunder
Barry Lyndon
there are about a dozen from the last 15 years, but I'm foggy on what they are just now.
Wings
Gance Napoleon
Intolerance
The Professionals

As for the digital projection aspect, its current state looks feeble and just kills me. However, when 4K digital projection gets going everywhere, it'll make a huge difference for me, because that gets amazingly close to the real film getting projected experience. Even Robert Harris has been saying stuff like LAWRENCE in 4K is fantastic, which I kind of doubletook on when I read it.

Yeah. The film issue was going through my head. One dream I have is opening a revival theater in LA, I'd probably call it the KANE. But I wouldn't want to project digital.

I think my dream team for having the Kane Theater would be as co-owners Joe Dante and John Landis (I watch a lot of their "Trailers from Hell" and they seem like cool dudes). I'd have two theaters in there, the Welles and the Wood. Welles for great stuff, Wood for B and weird stuff. I'd want to have costume parties, Rocky Horror screenings, obscure actor signings, and all kinds of nerd stuff going on. And it would all be made up (or restored depending on the venue) into an old movie palace atmosphere.

And I'd have someone running around dressed up like this:

Unless you have bought the prints by now, you're not going to get to show them. Studios aren't even letting their vintage prints out anymore, and the plan is to convert entirely to digital projection in 2014, and screw all the conventional theaters that haven't got DLP.

My best cinema experiences were THE RED SHOES and THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP, so I'll certainly make an effort to see anything else by Powell & Pressburger on the big screen, but I'm most eager to see BLACK NARCISSUS in particular.

Other than that, anything made by Sternberg, Tashlin, Lewis, or Minnelli would go down a treat (I passed on seeing MEET ME IN ST LOUIS and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS last year and I'm still kicking myself).

I just came here to post it.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/raiders-lost-ark-imax-361878

http://www.slashfilm.com/raiders-of-the-lost-ark-getting-imax-release-september-7

Quote :
To commemorate the long-awaited Blu-ray release of Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures, Paramount is reportedly planning to re-release Steven Spielberg‘s all-time action classic Raiders of the Lost Ark in IMAX theaters from September 7 to 13.

Spielberg himself worked on the film’s transition to 70mm while simultaneously remastering the 1981 hit for the high-definition home format.

ScreenCrush broke the news with a hat tip to Latino Review’s El Mayimbe.

The report states this hasn’t been officially announced yet but, it should be soon, and the press release will have a full list of theaters where you can purchase tickets.

It also says the film will play in both full 70mm IMAX as well as digital “LieMAX” formats, though either will be sufficient as Spielberg obviously didn’t shoot the film in IMAX thirty plus years ago.

Spielberg spoke to the New York Times about the conversion, confirming the release:

For me, it’s always been the bigger the screen, the better. It’s the only marked contrast we have to the generations that are seeing our movies on phones and hand-held platforms.

It’s a complete relief to be able to see a film that many people have just experienced on a palm-sized platform technology, suddenly hurled at that them on an Imax-sized screen.

The Blu-ray set hits shelves September 18 and some ticketing websites are already selling tickets so check your local IMAX.

So if any of y'all never seen it on the big screen, this is your opportunity.

I have a story about how we saw Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Mom and Dad will take us to see a movie a couple of times a month and my brother and my sister and I will take turn picking the movie.

That time around, it was my sister's turn so she picked The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082816/

Well, just our luck, the box office cashier said the print didn't come in.

I was standing outside looking at the movie posters and a poster caught my eye:

It had that now familiar orange Raiders of the Lost Ark lettering logo and on top of the poster it said from Spielberg and Lucas:

No photos from the movie, no picture of Indiana Jones!!

No clues whatsoever about the content of the movie!!

Then a banner sign over it that read: Sneak Preview tonight at 8pm!

I didn't know what the movie was about; I never heard of it but I knew the name Spielberg and Lucas from Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Close Encounters of the Same Kind.

So I told my parents: let's go see this!

Strange we were able to get tickets; there was no line outside!

We went in, saw the movie in a 1/2 filled auditorium.

When the movie was over, Dad said that was the best movie he ever seen.

We all enjoyed it and my sister, being 9 at the time thought Harrison was cute - LOL!

Dad kept asking me: How did you know that was going to be a good movie?

I told him, I didn't know, I just saw the name Spielberg and Lucas.

Dad subscribed to Newsweek Magazine then and the issue that he received in the following weeks was this:

Films you'd love to see on the big screen... B935c9206116010

the article on the inside was titled Best Movie of the Year!!

p.s. to this day, I still haven't seen The Nights The Lights Went Out In Georgia. I wonder if it's even on DVD!!

I was talking with a guy who worked on the most recent WINGS restoration, and it was fascinating. They actually had the original production notes on how the picture was supposed to be printed. Technicolor, Paramount and the Academy were all joining forces on it, trying to figure out exactly what hue was originally there in the tinted parts.

The wealth of detail is almost limitless. Inside the moonbase hangar and the hub of the space station, where there are all those projections of people working, you see so much that you start getting picky, wondering why there aren't reflections on the window glass in each insert.

Apparently it is limited to AMC theaters.

There is no IMAX AMC here.

All the IMAXes here are run by 2 companies: Cinemark and Edwards.

I've seen them all on the big screen. Excellent theater experiences. I don't think I'd watch another Powell & Pressburger film any other way now. Martin Scorsese also introduced THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP screening I attended last year.

one fine experience was A Matter of Life and Death. I took a friend to see it at the Prince Charles in Leicester Square. I don't think she was and is much keen on 'old movies' and she quite liked it. Seeing a film like that on the big screen with others who appreciate that sort of thing was excellent.
'Course she also saw where I got some of my character from.

I think seeing Colonel Blimp on the big screen would be the icing as far as Powell & Pressburger goes.
