10 Years of Quantum of Solace Quantum-of-Solace-Title-Card-1024x427

Is it a film anniversary worth celebrating, or just a marker of time for us to reflect on 10 years having passed already?

I'm sure there are defenders of the film out there - myself included to a degree. I like the colour palette of the film, a marked improvement over the sterile look of CR, Fields is a breath of fresh air because of her ridiculousness, I like Almaric's performance and the set design.

I think Quantum of Solace's unfinished script being something more agreeable than CR's developed script is telling enough of how I feel about the latter half of the noughties.

As we slowly edge into Australian spring time, I always have an inkling to pop QOS in. The last couple of years, however, I decided listen to Arnold's score instead and it quenches what desire I have to watch the film in its entirety. Despite a few solid tracks from Newman's SF and SP (emphasis on "few"), I will maintain QOS's soundtrack is the best of the Craig era.

Well it's better than "Spectre". I'm not even entirely sure it is considerably worse than "Casino Royale". Really, it sums up the increasingly disappointing Daniel Craig era, which unless and until Bond 25 surprises us, will have given us only one good Bond movie.

I've not seen it since that fateful opening night when my date spilled my Kia-Ora.

Pretty much. Whatever the inspiration that had for Skyfall must have been fleeting. My standards for Bond 25 have dropped considerably.

The latter.

Couple more blinks of the eye and we'll all be hobbling along with zimmer frames.

The great things about Millennials is that, even though they've drawn the short straw in life, they think they're living in a golden age. laugh

To certain demographics, things are a lot better today than 50 years ago.

We're all prisoners of the era we're born into. There's nothing anyone can do about that, for better or worse.

It depends what one thinks is most important to society. Granted there are more gender neutral bathrooms today than in 1970, but we’ve lost important skills along the way. Such as the ability to reason or travel to the moon.

I find it hard to accept this represents progress. Except, perhaps, in comedy value.

laugh

It certainly isn't progress. Once upon a time it was considered mental illness and now it's a loud minority group. The possible repercussions of gender neutral bathrooms are the very actions the left (with good reason, mind) are seeking to minimise.

There's a much greater chance of the left imploding than achieving their goals of unification. Ironic, no?

But back on topic... I suppose Olga Kurylenko would be celebrating 10 years of having an acting career.

You can take this reasoning a bit too far. It's undeniable that things have improved for say, African-Americans within the U.S. within the time frame Makeshift Python mentioned.

Kurylenko has actually had quite the good career considering her level of talent. She must have a great agent.

I'm glad you're satisfied; my good friends Harvey and Silvio recommended her. Helga is currently under review but you can help her by posting your experience on TripAdvisor.

Baker Street will continue to run Happy Mondays throughout August.

Have you checked the African-American incarceration rate over the last 50 years?

The thing is, we can all play identity politics. In more sensible times, this was called divide and rule. The only groups to have got considerably wealthier in the last 20 years are the state and charity sectors. And the super rich they serve, of course.

Those of us outside those areas (and in possession of a brain) regard this as a criminal con. Not unreasonably, given we have to pay for it.

1968 was just four years after the Civil Rights Act. It was the year MLK Jr. was killed.
I'm aware of the mass incarceration of African-Americans but I think most people within that community who remember the 1960s would still argue they are better off today.

Don't know about that. They certainly don't regard anything before Current Year to be a golden age because everything was even more <whatever>phobic but they still think they've had it tougher than every generation prior. Apparently back in ye olde days even gender studies majors working as part-time baristas could buy houses in trendy suburbs and go to Europe twice a year.

You're quite right. Since I identified as a woman I've found I've become a bit pre-menstrual and irrational.

Depends on what civil rights act you're talking about. The historical root of most of what ills America today is the Democratic Party.

It stole the Native Americans' land; was the bedrock of slavery; formed the KKK as its paramilitary wing; opposed votes for women; carried out compulsory sterilisation for blacks; and promoted eugenics in National Socialist Germany.

The Democrats’ greatest achievement is that many people today are unaware of these facts.

Every business must of course take risks in order to succeed, but I daresay having Messrs Ryder and Bez on your roster might be pushing it.

On the plus side, Baker Street's drug problem has disappeared completely.

BTW, who was that lovely young thing in the Happy Mondays who used to throw her knickers into the audience? I always felt that was a kindly gesture - normally the panties go the other way, as Tom Jones can testify.

Helps when you look as good as she does.

Attaching a "lead Bond girl" to a film would help with financing for producers of the movies she's been in. QOS is by far the biggest film on her resume.

I don't think she's necessarily bad (in fact, Kurylenko is one of the few leading Bond girls that can act), but I think Berenice Marlohe is getting severely overlooked.

The Democrats’ greatest achievement is that many people today are unaware of these facts.

That's because it used to be the party for right wing/conservatives, until Johnson’s association with civil rights drove them out and they have since switched to the Republican party, who were originally the party that abolished slavery.

Whatever the parties used to stand for in previous centuries no longer matters, as they are what they are now: Corporate shills.

I suppose that depends on how forgiving or stupid you are, or whether you believe a leopard can change its spots. Certainly it seems most politicians in the European Union (EU) accept that view; how else to explain the idiocy of fighting two world wars against Germany only to rebuild it and grant it de facto control of the EU?

The alternative is pretending Hitler is still in power. Not sure if that makes more sense, to be honest.
