Yep. Title says it all. I have a decent sized film, vinyl/CD collection, and book collection. However, the latter is the key problem. It is the reason I don't have room for the other two.

You see, I have the problem of going to cheap book sales and just buying so much that I lost control for a while and it got out of hand. At one point I had about a 1,000 books (I got a little carried away). At last count it was a good 630 books, which isn't bad. I've read a majority of them, I have the bad habit of liking to have a good pile around so I don't run out of books to read.

The problem is I feel like I took a wrong turn in that I feel that it isn't a very good collection, I feel like it should mostly consist of good literature, some crap, but enjoyable works, and lots and lots of non-fiction. At the moment I feel like their is more crap than literature and solid, non fiction.

In addition, space is also a huge issue. Not much of it to go around, I'm about full.

So, I'm hoping this summer to do a good cut down. Perhaps to about 400 books. And then at that point rebuild, swap out and try to focus more on solid non-fiction works. Not to mention the way I have them order is a joke and shame. Fiction and non-fiction are separated. Fiction is fine, I have it alphabetized so finding things are relatively simple. Non-Fiction I did thematically, although it has proven to not be the most effective method of organization.

So, anybody else in the same boat? Lack of room? Need to make improvements to your collection?

I have a massive collection of porn, that is starting to get out of hand. Being something of a hoarder the problem is ever growing. Perhaps I could donate some of it to a worthy party.

I have a pretty hefty book collection myself, though I've not counted them.....I do know that I need another bookshelf, and the main reason I don't buy as many books is lack of space....I have gotten rid of a bunch of books in the past few years just because it was something to sell and to have more space.

Funny thing is, even though I read mostly fiction, my book collection can be divided as such:

1/3 Star Wars books (I know, it's kind of embarassing  )
1/3 Other Fiction (and this includes what I would consider literature - Austen, Doyle, Dickens - As well as what many people would consider junk or just simple fiction - Harry Potter and such)
1/3 Non-fiction (And this is made up of mostly historical books and reference materials - as well as a good amount of Bibles and religious type books)

I find the answer to your problem fairly simple, Moore. Sell anything you don't intend to re-read or reference at any time in your life, and instead of buying more books, utilize your local library. That's what I try to do....(But it is so fun to buy books!)

As far as my other collections, I'm also needing more storage for my vinyl records....At least those tend to take up less space than books....

Just remember to have someone to throw it away in case you pass away. Always think ahead. I had an elder family member who did not think ahead....he sure as hell made things awkward for the rest of us.

That is the plan! Haha. I'm trying to find a good place to donate, swap, or sell books that I won't want anymore. I love buying books. For the past year or so, I've bought nothing with the exception of maybe one here or there, if that. I've done pretty well. I wish I hadn't binged for a year or two before that though!

Luckily, my campus has a fantastic library. So, that's the new plan! :p That and focus on non-fiction, which can be a bit hefty in price sometimes, so that will limit my spending too :p

I have somewhere in the region of 2,000 - 2,500 books. I'm too scared to count them properly. When we moved house, there were 76 boxes of books. I now have a library.

Wanna see?

There's another four bookcases on the landing, three shelves deep, full of fiction and poetry. And there's a large oak bookcase in the lounge full of Classics.

My name is Rave, and I have a book addiction.....

Rave, you've removed the porn, but not the Nazi regalia. An all too common mistake.

And why aren't you draped across the sofa?

It's an interesting library. I always think a book collection reveals its owner. :study: In your case, we have Jack the Ripper and other serial killers, British history, Naziism, the occult, Colin Wilson, conspiracy theories... Shouldn't you be in jail? :)

You are also the owner of a cat. Either that or you like scratching the corners of chairs...

Oh yes. An expensive Folio books habit. Always a good opening offer, then they take you for everything you've got.

It has been said that if the police ever raid, they will likely as not charge me with every unsolved crime since 1888.

And Colin Wilson is by default. He's never struck me as a particularly pleasant man, or particularly good writer.

A little from column A, a little from column B...

I have three cats.

True. I lapse every couple of years and wait til they're begging me. I like making people beg. As you well know.

And you missed all the Haynes manuals. And there's more than just British History - there's at least two shelves on Egyptian. And it's not Naziism, but the whole Second World War, thank you so very much! Not so much conspiracy as paranormal and other Fortean studies.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not wear a tinfoil hat and nothing else.

I have a decent sized DVD and book collection, though nothing the scale of Rave's. I never bothered counting them, I'd estimate a couple of hundred of both.

I stopped counting our DVD collection about five years ago, when it had already reached 470.

Oh, and that's before I start on 'Imself's Star Wars collection. There's another room full of those boxes.

Whenever I see Colin Wilson I think of that scene in Mike Leigh's Naked with the security guard. Having said that, you should read Ritual in the Dark. You might like it. If you’re interested in Jack, have you seen Hammer’s Hand of the Ripper? Very silly, but everyone plays it seriously, which makes it quite compelling.

I did see the UFO stuff. It was Anthony Summer’s Kennedy book that made me think of conspiracy theories.

Ah yes, there's a few Kennedy books. I thought it may have been the Freemasonry ones as well.

I've tried library thing to catalogue them all, but it's just too back breaking having to find each ISBN

In many ways the dewey decimal system makes no sense, so just put them in whatever order makes sense to you, because you're unlikely to agree with Dewey's.

-lalala, who knows more about the dewey decimal system than she ever wanted to from helping sort her mother's elementary school library....

p.s. Nice to see some of your Bond collection, there, Raven!

There's something magical about having shelves made to fit, so that I can keep more books on one subject together. It doesn't always work, because there are some weird sized books around, but generally, they're all there. Oh many an anguished tear was shed over how to categorise some topics!!! Two shelves of Arthurian studies - do they come under history or folklore? False memories and psychology - do they come under crime or 'forteana'? Certain books on cults - religion or forteana/cults?

Of course, the piece de resistance was when all the books were out of all the boxes and all on shelves, and I turned to 'Imself and said - "There's a book missing....."

There was as well - my complete Father Brown stories.

I am quite jealous. Sadly, I only have two tiny shelves to put my books on. The rest go on shelves in the back of closets that I had to throw in. Hopefully when I get a new place I'll be able to get a bunch of shelves and display them all..

Until then..... :(

They did spend five years boxed up, and before that, they were simply piled wherever there was room. So I know your anguish.

I became a philistine with the arrival of the internet. A minister from the Church of Clutterology suggested I should dispose of any book that I hadn't looked at in the last six months. All I can say is it seemed a good idea at the time. She has been banished from my house since I realised my mistake though I run into her occasionally on eBay when I need to buy my books back.

Space is becoming a real issue for me. I have a decent number of books (not as many as some of you, maybe 200-250 - Ravenstone, your collection is obscene) and a fairly hefty DVD collection, and I've simply run out of space to store them properly. For about a month, I was stacking most of my new purchases in one big pile. Finally dismantled it yesterday and realised that a number of the DVD cases near the bottom had deformed under the weight. An obvious consequence of such laziness, but one I hadn't really considered.

My DVDs are organised alright (not as neatly as I'd like, but livable). My books are an utter mess though. I look at one little stack and it has the complete works of Shakespeare and some economic histories of the Industrial Revolution. I look elsewhere and I see Proust and Sartre sitting next to Jeremy Paxman. It just makes no sense, there's no order at all.
