In light of the dearly just departed Halloween, which horror films impressed you the most, either because they were terrifying, suspenseful, entertaining, or beautifully made? I'll weigh in directly, but don't wait for me.

I confess that although I love horror films, very few actually horrify - sudden shocks aside the real sense of dread is fairly rare but here are a few that regaulalrly creep me out - in a good way.
Don't Look Now (1973) Event Horizon (1997) (I will probably get ribbed for this but the first half is effective imo) Freaks (1932) The Haunting (1963) The Innocents (1961) (head and shoulder the creepiest film I have seen, even gets me on repeat viewing) Rosemary's Baby (1968) The Shining (1980) Vampyr (1932)
As to Impressive and/or out and out entertaining
The Bride of Frankenstein (1934) Dead of Night (1945) Halloween (1978) I Walked with a Zombie (1943) Night of the Demon (1956) The Omen (1976) Poltergiest (1982) The Thing (1982) & (1951) The Wicker Man (1973) Most Hammer films 1956-1968 but in particular, Dracula (1958), Kiss of the Vampire (1962), Brides of Dracula (1962), Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), Quatermass and the Pit (1968), The Devil Rides Out (1968).

PS--Deliverance is one of my favorite films in any genre, but is it really a horror film?
PPS--Omen scared me so badly as an 11 year-old that I have not watched it since.
PPPS--Have not been able to make myself watch The Exorcist. Have seen perhaps the first third.
PPPPS--Could A Clockwork Orange be considered a horror film?

Not for McDowell it wasn't.
Fanny and Alexander also is a quite horrible vision from a certain point of view.

I almost added THE DARK KNIGHT and Carpenter's ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 to my list of favourite horror films.
Most people, I imagine, wouldn't categorise PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK as a horror film (or at least it probably wouldn't be in the horror section of most video rental stores), yet Harms and I have both cited it here. Indeed, I recall that Stephen King mentions it as one of the notable horror flicks in his wonderful study of the horror genre, DANSE MACABRE (in which I believe he also notes MAD MAX as a terrific horror movie - oh, and DELIVERANCE too, if memory serves).

I'm eagerly awaiting The Woman in Black.
I don't like horror films particularly. Well, I don't like the gore ones. Hallowe'en and Freddie never appealed. I couldn't stand Chainsaw Massacre. Chucky was boring.
House 2 is hysterical, though. Honourable mention there.
But I do love the make-up and special effects. And the shark fighting zombie scene in Zombie Flesh Eaters is still brilliant.

One of the unnerving films I've ever seen is David Cronenberg's SCANNERS. High recommended, along with most of Cronenberg's pre-NAKED LUNCH output.

Cronenberg, Verhoeven, and Hooper have created some pretty chilling images in their careers.
Do all of you consider PSYCHO to be a horror film, or something else?

for me, the ones that I remember (and all bear rewatching) include:
The Legend of Hell House The Exorcist Exorcist III (minority opinion o' the day) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me The Wicker Man Prince of Darkness (yeah, really) Carpenter's The Thing Rosemary's Baby Don't Look Now Session 9 (can't believe it took me this long to remember to list it) The Birds Village of the Damned (mostly SF, but I get a serious creepy vibe throughout, plus the great Sanders wall around mind thing is just all that & more)
The Rapture (if killing your own kid for God isn't horror, what the hell is?)

Psycho's very much a horror flick, IMO. One of the seminal works in the genre.

On paper, I might think it was possible, based on when they were trying to get Christopher Walken as a much younger lead, and before Lee J Cobb keeled.
But in execution .. well Fraker did some interestingly stylish photography.

The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project, Alien, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the little-seen (I believe it is, anyway) My Little Eye all stick in the mind as ones that have scared the bejesus out of me. Think I've come to appreciate an uneasy, unsettling atmosphere over splatter (although that CAN be entertaining) down the years.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is pure digital hackery. No real craft or technique, just amateurism posing as 'avant garde.' Never found it scary in the slightest, just funny.
