I may give it another go. I saw the first few episodes. I liked it okay.

It has a memorable scene with a bath tub.

I was bored with it. The premise doesn't interest me enough.

I only saw the first few episodes. My friends tell me I should have stuck with it.

I liked it a lot. I was sceptic at first, suspected another of those commentaries on the great American Civil War Round 2, onthenose-setup with health insurance and education. But it turned out, rather to my surprise, as a compilation of ingeniously well observed character studies and a pretty good society snapshot, all contained in an ever-growing momentum of doom. A drug thriller that could (and does) happen right next door. And it's quite funny. And deeply tragic in its best parts.

Gods, starting to sound like the TV spot, am I?

I burnt through all five seasons in as many weeks. You might say I was in need of a distraction.

The writing is generally good and occasionally excellent though the influence of The Shield is strong. I particularly enjoyed Jane saying that Jesse's sweet-talk made her vomit in her mouth a little - very cruel and funny dialogue given what went down in S2.

More proof that all the best writers are bastards.

Latest episode may be the best yet. It was also directed by a woman, Michelle MacLaren. Don't think I've ever seen a woman shoot action as well as that before.

There has been some outstanding electronic sound in Breaking Bad. I hesitate to call it music, but that's a recommendation. Interview with Dave Porter:

Check out his rack. Not many guys I say that about...

MacLaren has also directed some of the best (from a visual standpoint) episodes of Game of Thrones.
She is certainly one of the best directors working on TV right now.

So I've been trying to get into BREAKING BAD recently. My plan is to watch one episode a day, but so far I've forgotten on a few days so I haven't even started the second season. Bryan Cranston really elevates this show, yet at the same time there are other things bringing it down. Other than Walter White, I can't fucking stand any of the characters. The most annoying character is that DEA brother-in-law, so finding out that he doesn't get killed off at all in this show isn't very encouraging.

Having now watched the first four episodes of season one I'm pretty hooked on BREAKING BAD. This is certainly the best TV show I've seen since THE SOPRANOS, and it's very similar in the way that it blends brilliantly-written and -acted domestic drama with black comedy and extreme violence. Strong echoes too of the Coens and Tarantino, not to mention that the whole thing is often beautifully shot. What's not to like?

Whether I'll end up holding it in quite the same skyscrapingly high regard as I hold THE SOPRANOS I don't know, but the omens are pretty good and right now I'd say that BREAKING BAD seems at the very least to be the Stones to THE SOPRANOS' Beatles.

I haven't watched this, but I must say it's interesting to read some alternative opinions other than the near-universal praise heaped on it eleswhere.

In the fourth season, and Saul Goodman is probably my favorite character on the show. I would rather follow his shenanigans, and luckily there will be a spin-off.

I'm reminded of Paul Johnson's 1958 article on the Bond novels, Sex, Snobbery and Sadism.

Sounds like you want television to be the usual lies and life-affirming bullshit, Sharky. Suddenly, I understand why you like Spielberg.

Breaking Bad borrowed much from The Shield and that the debt has gone largely unnoticed. Nevertheless, it has some good qualities of its own. I mean, how can anyone not love a show that opens with a woman giving her husband a handjob and browsing eBay at the same time? Surely the best definition of an old married couple.

The Sopranos at its peak was one of the greatest things ever put on TV.
My main issue with it is that it tried too hard to become a TV version of Goodfellas in the latter seasons.
When it started out, it was a pure character study of a sociopath, which was very interesting.

Never seen the Sopranos. There's that awkward moment with a long-running show where you feel it's too late to catch up.

Plus I don't share the world's fascination with Catholic criminals. Maybe Birmingham getting bombed by the IRA influenced my viewpoint.
