Thought that some members might be interested in this BBC Radio 4 programme to be broadcast in the UK on Monday 15 September at 16.00 (4pm) as the subject matter of the death of the music press and music blogging ruining such publications has come up in conversation here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04gr9h5 (can be listened to here after its original broadcast).

Yesterday's Papers - the end of the music press

With weekly sales down from a high of 250,000 to less than 10,000, the end of the UK music press is nigh. But music journalist and former magazine editor turned successful blogger David Hepworth isn't mourning its loss. Recalling the golden ages of Melody Maker, NME, Smash Hits and other ground-breaking and agenda-setting publications with writers including Richard Williams, Danny Baker, Mark Ellen, Jude Rogers and Danny Kelly, David explores the long decline of pop in print and asks - in the words of the Rolling Stones - who needs yesterday's papers?

Contributors: Richard Williams, Mark Ellen, Danny Baker, Danny Kelly, John Doran, Jude Rogers, Rob Fitzpatrick.

Producer: Trevor Dann
A Trevor Dann production for BBC Radio 4.

Ambler could probably offer some valuable insight on this topic.

I don't recall Hepworth and Ellen being so happy when The Word closed, but I'm sure Olaf/Brian knows more than me.

Yes, doubtless he could have made a good guest on this show.

The show was the smug bollocks I expected. If you want to know why the NME is doomed you'd be better off taking a walk through its 150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years.

They have no fucking idea.

Proof that rockism is far from dead.

Edit: There's one or two good calls there (broken clocks etc.) - i.e. Hey Ya! and the MGMT tune (though they've got more interesting with each album) but overall it's indie shite. Libertines, Foals, Strokes, Arctic Cunteys and Radioshithead.
