If we already have a thread for this maybe a mod can sort it out. And pigs will fly.

Anyway, a few fairly recent specimens. There's much better out there.

"I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids."

"You have suffered an emotional shock... I will notify a rape crisis centre."

"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

"Don't suck any dick on the way to the parking lot!"

"If God did not want them sheared, He would not have made them sheep.”

"Ordinary fucking people. I hate 'em."

"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining."

Five minutes alone in the boudoir with Oppers to anyone who IDs them all correctly. Oppers, that doesn't include you.

Damn, I could have won that.

Some of my favorites:

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

"What we've got here is a failure to communicate."

"Dying ain't much of a livin', boy."

"You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means."

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."

As a side note Ambler, I would not have guessed you being a fan of "Chasing Amy". Or is it just the quote you like?

One more, this entire exchange from "Comanche Station":

Quote :
Dobie: A man does one thing, one thing in his life he could look back on... go proud. That's enough. Anyway, that's what my pa used to say.

Frank: He talked all the time, didn't he.

Dobie: Yeah. He was a good man. Sure is a shame.

Frank: Shame?

Dobie: Yeah, my pa. He never did amount to anything.

Isn't it Clerks? I like Kevin Smith, it's just his films I have a problem with.

The westerns are full of great quotes with content rather than just smart ass dialogue. Comanche is a good example. Incidentally, I was discussing what constitutes a good man with my hairdresser the other day. Somewhat to my surprise, she thinks I am. Must try harder.

Quote :
Ben Lane: Oh, I admit I've never had much luck when it comes to women. Oh, I've run with a few, but nothing you could call serious. Except maybe that little gal down in Sonora. She said right out that she wanted to marry me. She told everybody... everybody but her husband. Oh, he came within

[Making a finger gesture]

Ben Lane: that of doing me with a scatter gun. That taught me a lesson though - always check the brand to make sure you aren't driving another man's stock.

Such an underrated feature.

I might be wrong, but I thought Joey Adams character says that to Jason Lee after she finds out he has a huge mancrush on Ben Affleck.

The idea that a woman isn't any mans property is an aspect of feminist theory I'm happy to agree with.

Well I don't agree with the sentiment, just thought it was another memorable quote.

You made me look it up! Damn you, Oppers! God damn you all to hell!

Quote :
Dante Hicks: You said you only had sex with three different guys; you never mentioned him!
Veronica Loughran: Because I never HAD sex with him.
Dante Hicks: You sucked his dick!
Veronica Loughran: We went out a few times. We never had sex but we fooled around.
Dante Hicks: Oh my God, WHY did you tell me you only had sex with three different guys?
Veronica Loughran: Because I DID only have sex with three different guys; that doesn't mean I didn't just go with people.
Dante Hicks: Oh my God, I feel so nauseous!
Veronica Loughran: I'm sorry, Dante, I thought you understood!
Dante Hicks: I did understand! I understood that you had sex with three different guys and that's all you said!
Veronica Loughran: Please calm down.
Dante Hicks: How many?
Veronica Loughran: Dante...
Dante Hicks: How many dicks have you sucked?
Veronica Loughran: Let it go!
Dante Hicks: How many?
Veronica Loughran: All right, shut up a second and I'll tell you! Jesus! I didn't freak out like this when you told me how many girls you fucked!
Dante Hicks: This is different, this is important. How many?
[long pause as customer buys something]
Dante Hicks: Well?
Veronica Loughran: Something like... 36.
Dante Hicks: What? Something like 36?
Veronica Loughran: Lower your voice.
Dante Hicks: Wait, what is that anyway, something like 36? Does that INCLUDE me?
Veronica Loughran: Ummm... 37.
Dante Hicks: I'm 37? Hey, try not to suck any dick on the way to the parking lot!

so many quotes I've enjoyed over the years and yet my mind keeps going to Jack Hawkins' pre-mission speech to the boys in League of Gentlemen. Never mind.

CLERKS is something I always recommend to anyone who's worked in retail. I always wished I had worked in a video store when those were still around. It would have been fun to just recommend some of the worst films to customers I find annoying.

Excellent choice, Oppers. Don Siegel's The Killers is a movie of the week that's better than most movies of the last 50 years.

Siegel's THE LINEUP had some nice quotes, too.

"Did he say anything for me?"
"He said: 'Why be greedy?'"
"Why be greedy?"
"Those were his last words."
"Why be greedy? That'll print well for an epitaph."

Speaking of films made during the last 50 years, I've seen few scenes that are as dark as Eli Wallach kicking a man in a wheelchair off a balcony.

Dark scenes, eh? Guess there's another thread right there if anyone cares enough to start it. Klimov's Come and See would probably get a mention. Coming back to film quotes, lots of sub-sections come to mind. For instance, we could have a 'Most Shit Bit of Product Placement' category.

Q:Which do you think is best?

A:
Tired talentless tart: Rolex?
40-year-old intern: Omega.
Tired talentless tart: Beautiful.

or B:
Frank Booth: What kind of beer do you like?
Jeffrey Beaumont: Heineken.
Frank Booth: Heineken? Fuck that shit!

Difficult one, that.

a couple that come to mind of late having gotten the soundtrack is from Clear and Present Danger. Nothing Earth-shattering, perhaps memorable for Harrison Ford's delivery.

Quote :
The President: How dare you come in here and lecture me!

Jack Ryan: How dare *you*, sir!

The President: How dare you come into this office and bark at me like some little junkyard dog? I am the President of the United States!

Quote :
The President: [on who gets punished for 'Reciprocity'] You'll take the blame. Cutter and Ritter will take some too, but it won't amount to much. They'll get a slap on the wrist and $20,000 an hour on the lecture circuit. The rest, you'll dump on Greer. Yes, you'll take him down with you. You'll *destroy* his reputation. But it won't go any further than that. It's the ol' Potomac two-step, Jack.

Jack Ryan: I'm sorry, Mr. President, I don't dance.

or some Richard Jordan gems from Red October

Mr. Ambassador, you have nearly a hundred naval vessels operating in the North Atlantic right now. Your aircraft has dropped enough sonar buoys so that a man could walk from Greenland to Iceland to Scotland without getting his feet wet. Now, shall we dispense with the bull?

Quote :
Ambassador Andrei Lysenko: There is another matter... one I'm reluctant to...

Dr. Jeffrey Pelt: Please.

Ambassador Andrei Lysenko: One of our submarines, an Alfa, was last reported in the area of the Grand Banks. We have not heard from her for some time.

Dr. Jeffrey Pelt: Andrei, you've lost another submarine?

Listen, I'm a politician which means I'm a cheat and a liar, and when I'm not kissing babies I'm stealing their lollipops. But it also means I keep my options open.

and Sam Neill's dying words

Love everything about that scene. It's not just women and trains, but fabulously enigmatic dialogue.

Surprised no one's dropped some 007 in here.

I'd argue that "Bond. James Bond" should be in any top 10. And I could post almost the entire dialogue from Diamonds Are Forever.

There's great lines aplenty in Skyfall and even Moonraker. How about "You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season"? Christopher Wood has an ear for poetry.

'Q: It always makes me feel a little melancholy - a grand old war ship, being ignominiously hauled away to scrap. The inevitability of time, don't you think? What do you see?

Bond: A bloody big ship. Excuse me.

Q: 007. I'm your new Quartermaster.

Bond: You must be joking.

Q: Why, because I'm not wearing a lab coat?

Bond: Because you still have spots.

Q: My complexion is hardly relevant.

Bond: Your competence is.

Q: Age is no guarantee of efficiency.

Bond: And youth is no guarantee of innovation.

Q: I'll hazard I can do more damage on my laptop sitting in my pyjamas before my first cup of Earl Grey than you can do in a year in the field.

Bond: Oh, so why do you need me?

Q: Every now and then, a trigger has to be pulled.

Bond: Or not pulled. It's hard to know which in your pyjamas, Q. [offers his hand]

Q: [shakes his hand] 007.'
