PostSubject: Kubrick's 2001: Outstanding, boring, or both?   Kubrick's 2001: Outstanding, boring, or both? EmptyFri Dec 02, 2011 7:11 pm

I just watched the 2001 Blu Ray DVD for the first last night, using my 1080p projector, projected onto the 100 inch screen build onto the wall of my entertainment room, and it's the most beautiful 2001 movie experience I'd ever had!!

I went to IMDB and it seems there are many people who didn't like the movie or found the movie boring or thought the movie was a 2 1/2 hrs waste of their time!!

Why is that?

Why are there so many people who don't like 2001, who don't appreciate the beauty of this masterpiece, or who don't understand it?

Here's 2001 explained for DUMMIES:

Hmmm.... that's only the basic plot synopsis j7. Doesn't really help you with the deeper meanings of the film.

A lot of people can't take its slow piecing or relative lack of dialogue.

I do like the book better than the movie.

It is not about understanding a movie but also enjoying it, I once read the underlying motives and it didn't improve anything when I was trying to watch it again.

It is a personal taste and has little to do with DUMMIES. When you read IMDb then there are a lot of folks that will vote against a movie simply because they want their movies to be better. :affraid:
I would never give 2001 less than a 6 simply because it is a beautifull made movie but I rather watch something else.

Most IMDB members shouldn't be taken seriously, anyway.

This could be an interesting discussion, however. If I recall correctly, Sir Ambler himself was in the process of modifying his opinions of 2001.

I saw 2001 in an L.A. theater when I was 7, and it ruined me for pretty much everything else that has followed.

I've seen it in theaters over 20 times and can't imagine how often on laserdisc and DVD ... I know way too much about how it was made, and I wish I could get hypnotized or ETERNAL SUNSHINE'd into being able to see it fresh.

Outstanding, most def. Along with Se7en, first choice for desert island viewing.

I took that year's model to see 2001 at The Curzon Soho on 1 Jan 2001 and the fuckers left the house lights on.

I've seen it 15 times or more in the cinema, but when I last it saw it in July 2010 (at the BFI in 70mm) it no longer seemed the great film I always believed it to be. I saw Stalker a day or so later at The Prince Charles and that fell flat as well. Maybe I've finally got both films out of my system or perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for slow ponderous scifi.

Could be a more profound shift: people seem much more interesting to me than cellulose these days.

Cellulose? I never took you for a Triffid, Ambleridium. I assumed you were an expert on synths, not photosynthesis.

Celluloid? I'll blame the spell checker.

I don't think it's the greatest film ever made (Harmsway does, I believe), but it's certainly an extraordinary visual experience. Never seen it on the big screen (alas), but the Blu-ray transfer is a knockout.

It's not mentioned as much, but it's an extraordinary sonic experience too. Really deserves a proper sound system for those Ligeti pieces. Especially Atmosphères.

I think it's a serious contender for that title, sure, though of course there are other choices that make sense, too. At any rate, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is by far the greatest Big Screen Experience I've ever had.

Whole bunch of new 2001 goodies on the BBC arts page:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/eqvhzc

Sunday's 2001 BFI discussion is being broadcast on Radio Three tomorrow, 2 December at 22:00. Good panel, but neither Kubrick or Hal could make it.

Should be on the BBC arts site or iPlayer by Wednesday 3 Dec.

BFI's been posting quite a bit of 2001 today, including this photo:

Also, here is BFI's revamped trailer for the film, which I think is great:

I look forward to listening to the BFI discussion panel.

It's pretty cool how the aged makeup turned out to be pretty accurate to how the actor eventually looks.
