PostSubject: Brosnan in favour of a gay Bond   Wed Aug 26, 2015 4:30 pm

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/pierce-brosnan-claims-producers-will-not-allow-a-gay-james-bond-10471110.html

Quote :

Pierce Brosnan has revealed that while he would support a gay James Bond, he does not believe producers will back the idea.

The 62-year-old actor played the world's most iconic secret agent in four films from 1995 to 2002 (GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day) and backs Idris Elba to play the first black 007, but thinks there is a way to go until we see a departure from the traditionally-heterosexual character.

"Sure. Why not?" he told Details when first asked if he could picture it, before pausing for thought. "Actually, I don't know how it would work. I don't think Barbara [Broccoli, producer of every Bond film since 1993's Octopussy] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.

"Let's start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet."

CUNTINUED

<Insert obligatory joke about Brosnan already playing a gay Bond>

It was a minor quip at the fact that you have made references to his supposed sexual preference on several occasions and his latest statements seems to invite more of those.

As has Brosnan. He was very pretty when he was young – not handsome if you see the difference – and, as I understand things, thought he was gay until he met his first wife (Zeffirelli certainly saw that in him).

None of that is meant to say I object to a gay actor playing Bond - I think passing over Jeremy Brett was a big mistake on Eon’s part because he could immerse himself in a role - just that I find Brosnan unconvincing with women.  That’s a real problem if you’re playing big screen James Bond. The character is often a male Mata Hari, screwing women to gain information and advantage; half-gigolo, half-hitman.

A "[blank] version" of anything is not the original. It's similar to something being counterfeit i.e. it's not the real thing. A "black version" of James Bond is not James Bond, which is why it's a "version" or "translation" thereof. Same with a "gay version".

And, quite frankly, taking an established character of any series and turning them black, gay or female (all of which seems to be the hottest trend right now) is creative bankruptcy at its most glaring. Why is it the default position of these Hollywood types that success cannot be legitimate if blacks or gays are not somehow represented? Why doesn't anyone ask whether the next Bond will be of Pakistani origin? Or Korean? Why do the Asian and Southeast Asians never get included in the discussion? To show you are inclusive and prize diversity, why must everything first be offered a black version?

We're told there aren't enough good roles for "people of color" so we're going to instead offer them our sloppy-seconds?

And notice how Brosnan, after actually pausing for a moment to think about what he's just said, offers up a blunt assessment that he has no idea how a gay Bond film could work. And why would it? You're talking about totally re-engineering a series that has entertained for 50+ years to billions of people and totally redefining it just so you can appease a demographic that, at most, is only 5-10% of the world's population. It's total insanity.

Gravity, the Bond books are going to be out of copyright at some stage so you can be sure all these things you fear will happen, albeit later rather than sooner. Question is, why are you so threatened by all this?

In the scheme of things, none of it is important. So what if there's a gay/female/black Bond? These things come and go. How many versions of Holmes and Watson are coexisting right now?

Not threatened by them. Just have no interest in them.

Had no problem with Bernie Casey as Leiter. Ranks among the best actors to play him. But he never felt forced on the audience. He never felt like he was pushed on the audience in order to show that the people making the movie wanted to shore up their diversity bona fides. And we weren't living in a time that was as race-obsessed and gay-obsessed as we are now.

All of the social changes that people are seeking in the Bond series could be accomplished with the creation of new 00-agents. But they wont' do that because, at its heart, the movement to have a black or gay or female Bond is ultimately to change the world's power structure (run by white, straight men) and make Bond become more like the rest of the world rather than be "true to himself" and 'be who he is'. I did not sign up for that when I became a fan, and Babs may be perfectly happy turning 007 into a tool of the radical, left-wing of the Democratic Party, but I want no part of it.

Is it possible that the copyright law will be changed, so to extend copyright length? It wouldn't be the first time it happened (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act).

According to Erica's logic, then Peter Dinklage is qualified to be 007, right after Jet Li and Ice Cube.

I'll be letting go off the franchise when it becomes someone I just can't accept as 007. For some people it was Daniel Craig.

Seriously, I was going to bring up little people in my previous post and then deleted it, but yeah, I agree, Erica's logic taken on its face value would allow for anybody to be 007. We live in a world where absolutes are increasingly becoming "relative"...where nothing means anything anymore.

Am I "threatened" by a gay 007? No. I just won't accept it, that's all. Same for a female Bond or a black Bond. That's not being 'threatened' by anything. It simply ceases to be 007 anymore. And since my opposition to Daniel Craig was well established over at MI6 and CBn before I ever came here, how could I ever see my way clear now to accepting a black actor as 007 when I thought Daniel Craig was too extreme looking for the role?

I despise political correctness, and all of the talk about Bond being gay or black somewhere down the line is exactly that: political correctness run amok. I won't abide by it.

And while Craig will never be my favorite Bond, I thought he was pretty good in SKYFALL. Unfortunately, the best parts of SKYFALL are not indicative of his overall body of work as 007, and I don't think SPECTRE will change that. For this I blame the producers; Craig is simply giving them what they think they want (or what they assume the audience wants).

At this point I've got one foot left in the Bond door; most of the rest of me is out the door, with Babs doing everything she can to give me the final shove.
