Quote :
In honour of British Film Week, BBC Culture asked readers to share their favourite British films of all time. Here’s what you chose.

Withnail and I (1987)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The Third Man (1949)
Sexy Beast (2000)
39 Steps (1935)
Trainspotting (1996)
The Ladykillers (1955)
Secrets and Lies (1996)
Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
Brief Encounter (1945)

Good to see Lean, THE 39 STEPS and THE LADYKILLERS on the list.

Has everyone forgotten Ken Russell already?

Not a bad list though I'm more concerned about the lack of Hammer and Powell and Presburger than Ken Russell.

What's the criterion for this anyway? If it's just favourites then I'd add the following. Though films are such international affairs it's hard to say whether all of these are British:

Black Narcissus (Powell) (Pressburger)
Breaking The Waves (von Trier) (Asmussen)
Circus of Horrors (1960) (Havers) (Baxt)
Croupier (Hodges) (Mayersberg)
The Day the Earth Caught Fire (Guest)
Day of the Jackal (1973) (Zinnemann) (Ross)
Diamonds Are Forever (1971) (Hergesheimer)
Dr Strangelove (Kubrick) (Southern)
Dracula (1958) (Fisher) (Sangster)
From Russia With Love (1963) (Young) (Maibaum)
Get Carter (Hodges)
Hands of the Ripper (1971) (Sasdy) (Davidson)
Hell Drivers (1957) (Endfield) (Kruse)
I'm All Right Jack (1959) (Boulting)
In Bruges (McDonagh)
Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) (Hamer) (Dighton)
League of Gentlemen, The (1959) (Dearden) (Forbes)
Matter of Life and Death, A (1946) (Powell) (Pressburger)
Naked (Leigh)
The Nanny (Holt) (Sangster)
Peeping Tom (Powell) (Marks)
Quatermass and the Pit (Baker) (Kneale)
The Red Shoes (Powell) (Pressburger)
Skyfall (Mendes) (Logan/Purvis/Wade)
Thunderball (Young)
Tinker Tailor Solder Spy (Alfredson) (Straughan)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick) (Clarke)
Under the Skin (Glazer)(Glazer/Campbell)
Unearthly Stranger (Krisch) (Carlton)
Vampire Circus (Robert Young) (Baxt)
Village of the Damned (1960) (Rilla) (Silliphant)
The Virgin and the Gypsy (Miles) (Plater)
The Wickerman (Hardy) (Shaffer)
Witchfinder General (1968) (Reeves) (Baker)
Zulu (1964) (Endfield) (Prebble)

Submitted by fans on Facebook and Twitter, which may explain the problem right there.

Maybe the submissions were chosen at random. I'm not sure.

Hammer films are often more interesting for their scripts, subtext, economy and set design than their direction. For those more interested in content than packaging that's not necessarily a problem.
