Looks like Dracula 3D has finally made it into production after stalling in development hell. Although I don't feel that Argento has made an acceptable film since Opera, the casting of Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing and Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula is interesting.
A shame that Argento - one of the few technically savvy directors left - has to jump on the 3D bandwagon, but that's where the finance is these days.

Fantastic video.
It is unfortunate to see Argento giving into 3D, but must admit that I'll be giving this a chance, regardless. With his keen eye and crafty camerawork, maybe it'll be interesting in 3D. We'll see.

Can anyone point me to a thorough review of VCI's new bluray of 'The Bird with the Crystal Plumage'?
As is well known, the original Blue Underground issue fetches very high prices as Arrow's subsequent issue was disastrously cropped. VCI claim to be preserving the film's original ratio, but I want to see some evidence of that.

Got my first taste of Argento over the last week as I watched a few of the blus I'd picked up cheap a couple of years back.
Inferno didn't really do much for me. I quite enjoyed the opening sequence in NYC and the subsequent section in Rome, but once the brother landed in the States the film lost me - with the one exception of the terrific but totally incongruous passage concerning the crippled bookseller and the bag of cats in a beautifully foggy Central Park. I knew going in that I should expect a very bold visual style from Argento but I found it all a bit excessive here. Bizarre hot pink lights in a haunted cellar, unspeakably gaudy interior design all through the apartment building. On this budget couldn't they have found a better costume for Death than one picked up at a fancy dress shop?
Phenomena was much, much better - probably the best of the three I watched. The final thirty or so minutes are nuts! My only real gripes with this one are the soundtrack, the pacing during the mid-section of the film, and a feeling that Connelly's relationship with the insects is underdeveloped such that when her powers finally come into play during the climax it feels a little cheap. I like to see what the director intended but I'd be interested in seeing the original cut of this to see if they succeeded in tightening it up or if they butchered it.
On Deep Red I messed up and watched the longer cut under the mistaken impression that it was Argento's preferred version. I could have done without a lot of the comic relief that seems to have been added here to be honest. Otherwise a very entertaining mystery film.
Spoiler:
I think the bluff is kind of pathetic given that anybody with a better attention span than a goldfish will know that it isn't the proper reveal. Although I must admit that for whatever reason my money was on the gay lover right up to the end, even though in hindsight the murder at the family home in the opening credits makes it all so obvious.
