Have yet to read Trigger Mortis, but I have a copy of it at home. Trying to delay new James Bond material to help tide over the wait between movies.

I admire your will power. The only time I ever exercised such restraint was when I kept Icebreaker on the shelf until Octpussy finished its first-run - but I still read it before NSNA was released. Now that was an excellent year!

Ha I can imagine! The restraint comes from knowing that the continuation novels won't be as good as Fleming's work.

Trigger Mortis was well received wasn't it? So hopefully Horowitz's follow up will also be one of the better non-Fleming novels.

Well received by me. I intend to read it again soon (that's the measure of a continuation's quality: its re-readability).

Apparently it's going to be a prequel to Casino Royale. I wonder whether this will cover Bond's years during WWII or Bond's early days in the service/Bond getting his licence to kill before the events of Fleming's first book.

Interesting. I remember Michael Fassbender mentioning that if he were to become Bond, that would be a period of the character's life he'd like to explore.

Hope it sheds light to all those CR fanboys.

Recently finished Trigger Mortis, really rather enjoyed it. Horowitz certainly came closer to capturing Fleming's spirit than Deaver or Boyd.

So him writing the next one is good news.

Good to read that you enjoyed it, BI. I'll soon be ordering Trigger Mortis (and Colonel Sun - supposedly the best two of non-Fleming works).

Anthony Horowitz's second James Bond book, entitled Forever And A Day, is a prequel to Casino Royale, exploring Bond's origins.

Craig fanboys would be scratching their heads.

It’s time for James Bond to earn his licence to kill.

This is the story of the birth of a legend, in the brutal underworld of the French Riviera.

Hmm... wouldn't the Reds be a more appropriate adversary?

It sounds more like the DAF brand of Bond villainy.

An origin story? Well, I'll give it a try. Trigger Mortis was probably the better of the recent outcrop.

I'm in because I've followed his Alex Rider books for years and felt that outside of his lifts from 007 he does have a very influenced by Fleming tone. Actually some I missed there's another Rider book out now. His Holmes novels were fun too.

But why must it be a prequel? Out of anyone he's more than qualified to write a modern Bond novel even if no new continuity is made up.

Of course Trigger Mortis is better than other continuation novels as it contains original material of Fleming. It is not non-Fleming...
 jump

I was rather put off by the beginning. It reads like a modern thriller (and I simply dislike modern thrillers..why bother with them when there is stuff like Chandler's or Ambler's novels around)? The first chapters look partly like a re-telling of Goldfinger. roll eyes
But he gets better at imitating Fleming in the later chapters. And I just so love the Nürburgring set-up that he has a big advantage over here. That simply unfolds by itself, fast cars, girls everywhere, imminent danger (even without SMERSH)...
But I am just in the middle of the book, so I cannot say yet for sure.

No, it doesn't. Actually, I find this confusing. I have pointed out some hours before that the Fleming material stems from a TV series that was planned, but never produced. How could a prequel use material from this series? This seems like alienating Fleming's material. I mean, except for the case that Fleming had written this prequel; but why then have we never seen that before?

I see the sequel or rather prequel book is out now, flicked through it in WHS. Raised my eyebrows at the "death of 007" bit on the blurb -largely as I clean forgot the book was going to be a prequel to CR. Glad someone 'official' took this idea up beyond my idea of a new 007 in my piece of fluff. Hopefully it'll be on par with Trigger Mortis.

Still have yet to read Trigger Mortis... Slowly making my way through other, non-Bond novels.

I have to say, I quite like the cover. Evokes Bier's The Night Manager with the bullet-like boat.

Yes, you're right. I mean, John le Carré is not the worst association to call to a customer's mind when you sell Bond, is it?

I have to say that with further reading my love for Trigger Mortis has cooled down lot. Now it looks like a (how Fleming would put it) conglomerate of scenes taken Fleming's novels. Pretty much every scene has a Bondian feeling to it, but only because they are more or less shamelessly adapted from one of Fleming's novels. Let's say "adapted". Bond is taken captive and after finding himself in some weird surroundings he and the also captured lady have to dine with their captor (and he tries to steal a knife) which is not Dr No at all. The original Horowitz material is SO gruesome that it turns my stomach. That's why I don't read modern, contemporary thrillers. I am not excited about flying pieces of human bone.
Just a word of warning, once you're past the Fleming material, it gets...different. And it's included in a way that it even sticks out. The part that does not befit the rest of the book is Fleming's material. Well. That was not the plan, I assume? Aren't we supposed to buy the Waterstone edition which highlights Fleming's material?

It is in my possession, and the 'death of 007' stuff gave me pause too because for a second I thought Horowitz had decided to give credence to that irritating idea of recent years that 'James Bond' is a codename passed along from one agent to the next. But it's to do with the passing along of the number only, thankfully.

Which does not make much sense, either. In Fleming's novels, only three double O's are active at a time which implies that they are numbered - meaning the MI 6 continues numbering after "retirement" of one agent.
