| Though not direct neighbours in the canon, AVTAK is commonly thought of being an updated GF. Microchips substitute gold, May Day in place of Oddjob, etc.. But two sequences in particular stand out as being eerily similar, and both quite effective: the Goldfinger briefs the gangsters, and Zorin's briefing on the blimp. There's an ensemble of businessmen meeting with the crazed villain in his space. There's one objector to the villain's plan and opts out. The villain leaves them with their quiet, enigmatic sidekick, who deceives them and forces them to their death.
Which is more effective? Does the original win? Or does the sequel refine and improve on its inspiration? |

| Walken gets a classically groansome one-liner at the end of the AVTAK scene, but it's gotta be Goldfinger. The original and best. |

| Weirdly enough, I might have to edge towards AVTAK. The Frank Sinatra clones and the pool table were hammy enough to spark a fatwa. |

| Much as I love the Walken/Zorin character Goldfinger is simply in a class of his own - even more amazing a performance when you realise it is dubbed as extensively as it is. |

You make a compelling case, lachesis, and combined with Adam's set design, the writing, and of course, "the trick pool table", it's a great scene in an otherwise rather flat* second half. Contextually, however, there's no real reason for Goldfinger to explain his plan only to kill them - other than to unwittingly provide intelligence to Bond. I'm voting for AVTAK's Blimp Scene. May Day is positively bizarre, Zorin is energetic and looney and the briefing on the blimp itself is a neat little idea. Zorin's quip is excellently delivered and overall, it's one of my favourite scenes in Moore's era. *In comparison to the exceptional first half. |
