| I see some are blaming the drop in ratings on the fact that it's become a forum for activism rather than an awards show. This ignores the fact that the ratings diminishing is a longer trend that has more to do with the lack of cultural impact the Oscars holds in 2018. I guess it's still of importance to industry insiders, but does anyone outside of Hollywood truly still care whether or not an actor/director/writer won an Oscar? I think its decline can be summed up by the fact that Kobe Bryant now has as many Oscars as Hitchcock and Kubrick combined. |

- It’s less obvious why cerebral sci-fi movies such as Blade Runner 2049 and (going back a year or two) Alex Garland’s Ex Machina continue to be ignored by voters in the big categories. For the latter pair are surely paramount examples of the cinema of big ideas – in this case the future of the human race.
When, in the far distant future, our robot overlords look back on the movie landscape of the early 21st century, they may wonder why we were quite so obsessed with an outrageously over-the-top body-swap horror movie and a film in which somebody has sex with an imaginary fish creature – when the really big issues were staring us in the face all along. https://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2018/mar/06/oscars-2018-genre-cinema-get-out-the-shape-of-water Of course, some of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time were also financial duds, so this might be inherent to the genre. Most treat cinema as disposable and don't expect to exert their mind even for a minute after exiting the theater to ponder what they have just watched. |

I could do without his political squawking but T2 and Titanic are good films. Heard he's considering another one with Arnie. |

| T2 is a brilliant bit of film-making. So much so that I am a bit sad that the man responsible for it has spent most of the 21st century working on movies about big blue smurfs.
This is well worth the watch if you are interested in its technical details: https://vimeo.com/141096734
If you don't want to watch the entire thing, at least check out the shot-by-shot breakdown, which starts at the 11:30 mark. |
