Just in case someone does not know it. It's gorgeous.
At some point they seem to forget about the microphone.

I take it that I do not need to point out their friendship. In one novel Bond buys the new novel of Raymond Chandler...

A famously drunk Ian Fleming in that interview. Raymond Chandler thought Casino Royale was one of the greatest debut novels ever written*. I agree, though it's also true that Fleming never approached its heights again. I wonder if Chandler read it in the US version? She Played A Man's Game With A Woman's Weapons.  colgate

Chandler is the inspiration for Fleming's prose and I found my way to his writing not long after reading the Bond novels and Hammett and Cain for the first time. Chandler is the master IMO and the finest writer who ever lived. However Fleming took his style and made it truly breathe on the page with a tighter focus and more narrative construction.
So they are no. 1 and 2 for me and absolutely fitting that they had such a fondness for one another.

Funny you should say that, CJ; the second US edition kept the cover but was retitled, "She Walked Into A Door'. Here's the fabulous back cover:

I have spent years wishing if Chandler only had had a student... big grin
Yes, I totally agree. You can really sense Chandler's influence in Fleming's novels; although it is hard to put a finger on it.
They are my favourite authors, too; but I find it hard to decide who would be no. 1 and who no.2. I mean, they are so close to each other that it is probably not necessary to decide at all.
But since I have read Eric Ambler (who was kindly recommended to me by other Chandler/ Fleming-fans) it has become more complicated...
I will not rank them; I just say that I like "Fleming & friends".

Jimmy Bond? Is he Jimmy throughout the whole novel?

And here comes some kitsch for you. Could be me.  wink

I think they also considered titling it "Jimmy Weinstein And The Tits That Tried To Stop Him" but scrapped it as the surname was too Jewy for 1950's America.

Jewish humour will not be tolerated in today's tolerant society, CJ. Expect a dawn raid. Probably around dawn.

Besides, don't you know that Fleming's real name was Finkelstein?

I forgot to ask: What is your favourite novel of Chandler?
Mine is The Long Good-Bye.
I am really sorry that our book club was so short-lived.  sad Endless possibilities to continue it... sigh

It was actually Chandler that was drunk in that interview, not Fleming. Fleming drove Chandler to the recording. I have the edited transcript somewhere in my literary Bond files. It makes for interesting reading.

I really enjoy all of Chandler's work but if forced to choose The Long Goodbye is what I always give for best book ever written.

Love that cover art. I actually scored a decent copy of it on eBay last year. They're hard to find.

Very heteronormative and oppressive of me, I understand. So I think I'll just burn the fucking thing. #MeToo #Donate #PayPal

Literally 100% of the people on that cover are white. LITERALLY. WHITE.
