| The first thing I think of when I think Goldeneye is mood. The film has an atmosphere and ambiance to it that is fairly unique to it and one of the main reasons why it's one that always at least goes in the top three for me. It's a transitional Bond film bringing him into a post-Cold War era but still in a way bringing an epilogue to his previous exploits and part of it is just in the mood. The film has a darker, colder feel to it that feels as much a character as Bond and the rest of the cast and while I love everything else about the film the ambiance is what comes out on top for me. |

| If you single out one aspect of Goldeneye to be your favourite, what would it be and why?
"Its the fact that the return of Bond in that film, showed how alive Bond still was. People had no idea if the franchise would continue after the cold war, but the producers actually made a miracle bringing our favourite secret agent back. Also, the fact of how its Nintendo 64 game brought millions of new fans to the movies and the character itself, and so, strengthening the return of 007 to the modern era. Also the fact that its a classic, kind of a modern classic, and its never boring to be watched. The fans certainly love most of the scenes, not just the whole movie itself. The perfect balance that the producers found by mixing most of all the other Bond actors, making Brosnan the best of its time, for many, including me."
Probably, there wouldn't be 007 anymore, if it wasn't for Goldeneye. |

| Very good BamesJond! I'd agree that it's certainly a classic-- an instant classic the moment it was released.
I would say Brosnan isn't just the best actor of the time to play Bond, but certainly the best Bond since Connery (and even post-2002), for the very reason you mention - the perfect balance. Moore didn't have the danger, Dalton was without the charisma, Lazenby lacked the films to solidify his tenure, and was a little rough around the edges in terms of acting technique. Brosnan had that sense of danger, who was as cool as a surgeon about death, the charisma and allure and you'd see why women are attracted to him, and the acting chops to pull it off. |

| I started dating in 1995 so I went to see Goldeneye 5 times with 5 different guys, none of whom made it to second base but then again, I was still barely a teen.
I thought the pretitle was fun, especially the freefalling behind the runaway plane...but the CGI has become embarassing as the years go by. Pierce also looked good as Bond but maybe a tad too skinny.
If I had to single out one favourite aspect, it's simply that Bond was back after a 6 year drought. I still preferred the Moore and Dalton films by far. |

| If I had to single out one facet I'd nominate the supporting cast as one of the best of the series. The video game helped, of course, but the cast of characters is near iconic - 006, Orumov, Xenia, Boris, Valentin. Not only are the actors all fantastic, but every character has their own quirks and puts their own stamp on the story. Few Bond films have had an ensemble of this calibre. |

I agree wholeheartedly with this. GE has an excellent ensemble perhaps only rivalled by FRWL, GF and OHMSS. I remember seeing a video of Llewelyn excited by TWINE's cast too, and I wouldn't disagree (Richards included in that). Of course I maintain a preference to TND'c cast too, with Pryce, Yeoh, Hatcher, Schiavelli, Palmer, Jay and Otto, for sheer physical presence. But this is about GE, and if the array of villains aren't enough (which they are), add Natalya, Wade and, as you say, Valentin to the mix and you've got some very well drawn characters all expertly performed. - BC wrote:

Maybe because GE was so good you didn't want to miss a thing? |

| I started with a simple answer...but then it got quite convoluted. Sorry! Thanks for the opportunity BAB! For me it is primarily the tone of the overall film. Yes there was the fun of having Bond back, and the teaser trailer remains one of if not the best teaser of all time. But what keeps the film special is its remarkable tone. It's a mixture of the Eurothriller style popular at the time with the classic Bondian elements reworked to make a cocktail that actually works in a post-Cold War landscape. While I don't think the film is perfect it is a remarkable achievement in that it revived Bond to both built in and new audiences but also to all the naysayers. And it does this while still being Bond in its identity in the precise way the modern films have not and refuseto do. Part of the film's strength is the driving force of Martin Campbell's direction and the notion that if this film did not work the series was dead. Thus even though it has deficiencies (like most anything does) the passion for the project is so in force that it practically picks itself up by the bootstraps and marches on. Also aiding the brilliant tone is the remarkable editing by Terry Rawlings which assists Campbell's style by being very fluid in and of itself and GE remains the last Bond actually cut on film by hand. Added to this is interesting moody photography, a phenomenal 5.1 sound mix for the era which is still amazing to this day and the last work of the master Derek Meddings making pure magic. As mentioned above the supporting cast is first rate-specifically because they are all given things to do and then actually directed for a change thus making what would be secondary characters into fan icons. But of course the big draw is the man himself and in my own humble opinion Brosnan has never been better. His attack on the Bond character here in GE is the most nuanced and has such a level of innate being that you can literally feel the weight of 007's life experiences coming through into the dialogue and thus the bond between 007 and 006 is established and maintained throughout the film giving the ultimate credence to the final utterance of "for me". It is sad to think that in a number of ways he was never able to portray such degrees of subtlety again onscreen. Goldeneye is unashamedly a Bond film and one not afraid to have a little different flavor to it. It is heavily influenced by the Eurothriller, but is also first and foremost a spy thriller set in the real world and this grounding in reality blends astoundingly well with the innate dark humor of the script. Thus it is a film aimed at adults that doesn't belittle their intelligence and tries to still fulfill the escapist promise of a Bond film while being smack dab in the middle of the 90's. Then again I could have just taken the short route and said Eric Sera's underrated and unfairly maligned score which is quite brilliant in being such a departure. I love the sounds he achieved despite having some direct Leon similarities and being a huge John Barry fan myself. I still find myself preferring the GE score to all of Arnold's work. Or I could say that Boris Grishenko is the patron saint of all geeks who I quote every time I am at a computer. So turn on DK mode, climb in the tiger helicopter, have a quick race with Xenia and crank the home theater volume loud to revisit the film that everyone said would never work. (Just keep in mind the Dolby mix on the old releases has the super loud LFE channel! Your neighbors will think it's a nightclub!) |

And here's a (slightly racy) interview on a Tumblr page dedicated to Xenia Onatopp: https://onatoppssteambath.tumblr.com/post/185752319841/ |

| Excellent write ups! I quite like the idea of Xenia being the only character who doesn't judge Bond for who he is, and highlighting that M (which I always thought was the case, especially considering what she asks of him in TND re: Paris) - and to an extent - Natalya are inaccurate in their assessments of him. Thanks for sharing. |

| The best thing about Goldeneye is that it's a work in progress for Casino Royale.
It was the first step in sending the franchise into the modern world of cinema, updating Bond for our times. |

How? Aside from ensuring the series post-Cold War, there' very little in GE that makes it to CR... GE is epitome of James Bond. CR is the antithesis. But it's your entry. |
