If I see one more film the rest of this year, I hope it's this one. I've heard so much about Ruiz's MYSTERIES OF LISBON, even before his passing just a few days ago. It's a sprawling, discursive narrative set in late 18th- and early 19th-century Portugal, a Borgesian web of stories that tumble from one into the other, brought to life with a lushness and operatic style reminiscent of Visconti's THE LEOPARD. For more, I'll point you to Tony Pipolo's review for Film Comment.

The trailer is below, but on the Apple site for MYSTERIES OF LISBON, they offer a clip of the film that I suspect is a better representation of the film than the trailer is.

Composer Jorge Arriada has been a longtime collaborator with Raul Ruiz (he also did work on MYSTERIES OF LISBON), and today, Mubi offers a sampling of Arriada's work for Ruiz.

As my comments elsewhere have indicated, I think MYSTERIES OF LISBON is a true-blue masterpiece. MYSTERIES offers grand, arthouse melodrama, not *entirely* unlike I AM LOVE or TETRO, two films which I've admired from the past few years, though they pale in comparison to MYSTERIES. And since MYSTERIES is fundamentally concerned with questions of memory, narrative, and identity, the better point of comparison might be 2046 (or this year's over-celebrated TREE OF LIFE).

It's a shame that practically nobody will see it; four-and-a-half hour epics aren't the rage these days, much less when they're foreign period pieces.

It sounds like an interesting buy on dvd.
