I own both of these on DVD but have only seen one of them at the cinema. It was the American version in which Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) gave an acceptably creepy, yet sympathetic performance as Abby, a girl who is not what she seems and forms a strong alliance with Owen (Kodi Smit McPhee), a boy who is regularly picked on at school because of his introverted nature. There were some very unique set-pieces in this such as what's happening inside a car as it overturns, a hospital bed catching fire with a patient in it and the harrowing swimming pool climax. This is one vampire thriller that puts recent ones to shame because of its refusal to glamourize these creatures and its grim, but ultimately uplifting nature.

I haven't seen the original, but really enjoyed Hammer's remake. Great new start for them. And I agree with you -- there hasn't been a recent vampire film (or horror film, for that matter) that matches its quality.
I enjoyed it's low-key tone, and its exclusion of anything immense to satisfy average audiences. The ending was also fun, in a way.

The original is decent. The remake loses much of what made the original appealing.

I can't stand the original, which is what I've seen. In my book, it's an indicator of how Western film culture has all but gone down the drain. I should stick it on my car.

I think Moretz and McPhee were excellent in the remake.

In my humble opinion, Chan-Wook Park's THIRST is a better film than LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Though I seem to be in a minority on that one.

Haven't seen the remake, in what way does it differ from the original? Or are there no major differences plot-wise?

I don't think there's much difference in terms of the plot but in the remake, Abby seems more of a tortured soul who wants to be accepted and she's definitely creepier looking than Eli in the original.

The differences plot-wise are all minor; there are bits where ambiguities present in the original are lost in favor of more obvious, blunt understandings of the characters and their relationships to one another. It's also showier than the quieter original.

Changing the sex of one of the major characters is hardly minor. Unless you're a Bond fan, of course.

This is NOT Hammer. They're disgracing one of the most (if not the only) glorious British film production companies.
Hands off Hammer Horror you T***S (not you Brown, the nuHammer producers).

I'm not a fan of the orininal either I must admit. I appreciate the effort but all the talk of LTROI being one of the best vampire films ever (or even the best :x ) makes no sense to me.

Lifeforce is the best vampire movie ever made:

Oh, the days when tits were still involved in every respectful vampire movie, not some sparkling bi-sexual teenage males.

This is the only photograph of a clothed Mathilda in existence.
Thus it is the only jpg of the Goddess which Photobucket will allow.

Fair enough. I agree that it isn't one of the best ever, and barely scratches the surface in comparison to the quality of the past Hammer vampire films. "Let Me In" also lacks the gorgeous visuals that so many of the Hammer films held. For the most part, in terms of visuals and cinematography, "Let Me In" has the same bland digital look to it that so many new films have. That may be the case for their next feature, too, starring Harry Radcliffte.
But, it was a nice break from sparkly, queer vampires, Hawaiian werewolves, and zombies. For the modern horror genre, it may not be perfect, but definitely a step in the right direction. That's mainly why I'll regard it as one of the best recent horror films (although, as I wrote, I still need to see the original).
Bottom line: vampire flicks need more tits.

Lifeforce is a tit flick with occasional vampires. A much better idea.

Here's a comparison of the colors, by the way:
From what I remember, most of "Let Me In" was that yellow/orange, along with some steel blues and grey. Fucking ugly.

It looks like they used sodium lights. Horrible.

"Let the right One in" could boast two very good child actors, and I very rarely hold those in very high esteem. Most of the time it's fantastic if they're not so horrendous that it ruins the entire movie, but here they actually carried it and their chemistry was fantastic. I believe they auditioned hundreds of kids before they settled on these two and it shows.

I agree completely and that's a first.
In casting Lina Leandersson they also avoided the usual bland and pretty young thing, which makes her much more interesting to look at.

Jack Asher should be mentioned a great deal more in Hammer discussions IMO, his work is so often overlooked.
I'd put his name up there with Fisher,Sangster,Bernard and Co. A great artist.

Yes, Hammer films may have been cheap and mass-produced, but in the golden age they didn't look it. They were things of beauty as well as horror. A bit like Oppers, in fact.

For me Hammer's greatest strength was the ability to create great atmosphere, that's the most important thing when it comes to horror movies and Hammer did it better than anyone else at the time. Hammer completely outplayed and surpassed the Universal flicks.

Hammer's golden age may have gone on for longer than people generally accept. I have a high regard for some of the early 1970s output such as Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus and Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde. (I need to see Capt'n Kronos again to see how it's holding up.)
