| As I recall, Ambler doesn't like him much. It's been a while since I last saw a McQueen movie, likely the last one was The Getaway. He's an iconic actor no doubt, but I always felt like he was more in the John Wayne mold of movie stars, in that he could do one type of role well, but didn't necessarily have any range to speak of. |

| When I think Steve McQueen, I always think either The Great Escape or Bullitt, and it's not even a surprise, because he made those films. I also love The Magnificent Seven and The Towering Inferno, although his performances weren't the most noticeable.
But still, he's the unbeatable King of Cool, an alternative Clint Eastwood. |

| I'm always in favour of watching some McQueen awesomeness. My faves... The Great Escape. naturally. Love With The Proper Stranger, uncharacteristic but terrific performance in a terrifically sweet but unsentimental film. A rare streak into unlikablility/villainy for McQueen, and he carries it off awesomely in The War Lover. And of course theres The Magnificent Seven. Which ought never be forgotten. 8) |

Your recall is faulty; I've not expressed an opinion on McQueen before. I rate his scene-stealing in The Magnificent Seven very highly. |

I think that was Bob Redford. |

| Steve McQueen was never a great actor, or a versatile one, but he was a true screen actor in the most key sense. I admire the fact that he cut any unnecessary lines, telling the director he could do it all with a look. Far too many actors could learn a lot from that, when under the camera.
For his finest performances, look to LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, BULLITT, THE SAND PEBBLES, PAPILLON, THE GREAT ESCAPE, JUNIOR BONNER, THE GETAWAY, and probably his most overlooked role - AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. |

| I'd say McQueen's best performance was in Papillon, whereas his coolest roles were The Towering Inferno, The Getaway, Bullitt and The Great Escape.
Redford is my other favourite actor. Did you know it was McQuuen originally planned for the role in A Bridge Too Far, which eventually went to Redford (the other big 70's actor in Hollywood at the time) because the producers couldn't agree on a fee with McQueen. I know director Attenborough looked at McQueen as a friend, so it was probably him pushing for McQueen in the role. |

| McQueen was also offered Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Sorcerer and The Driver in the 1970s but turned them all down as he didn't want to keep repeating himself so he chose more thoughtful roles like An Enemy Of The People and The Hunter in which he played a more aged version of Josh Randall. |

| Like Homer Simpson once said...Steve McQueen is my idol. Whether he's tearing up the streets in a mustang, gambling at a high stakes poker table, or masterminding a bank heist for sheer kicks. He utterly commands the screen.
His 'less is more' attitude is part of what makes him so damn cool. I actually thinks he gave a great performance in The Thomas Crown Affair, paired with Michel Legrand's theme tune. He's really believable as the man who has all the money in the world but nothing to live for, until she comes along.
"It's my funeral, you're just along for the ride".
Suffice it to say, I haven't seen a McQueen film I didn't like. Except The Getaway. That was a snoozefest, Ali McGraw's tits aside. |
