Not really a bright move, on his part, but the banishment was a little over the top. He was clearly fucking around with them.
Either way, his next film looks gorgeous, and I've read that it's being praised quite a bit. |

| He's a conviction-less stunt artist, and a fraud. What do you expect? He knows just to rub salt into old Gallic wounds, to get a reaction.
Sure, the organisers could have been a little thicker skinned, but it's their private festival, with their rules. He got what he ordered. |

| Idiotic move on his part. I'm not really too fussed about him getting banned. He deserves it, and it's absolutely their call to make. |

| They haven't thought this through ... it could trigger another bout of depression, which could lead to him making Antichrist 2. |

- Should we pardon our artists so long as they keep giving us good art? Maybe the occasional clod of dirt is the inevitable by-product of all the digging they do on our behalf.
A few hours after the Cannes judgment Mr Trier shared his thoughts with this writer. How had he got into this mess? I asked. “It’s because you shouldn’t put me in front of a microphone. It sounds a little strange but actually I’m afraid of conflicts. At a certain point I see people around me and I want to see happy faces. So of course something I say is meant to be sarcastic or mischievous but suddenly I realise I’m not in the middle of friends.
“I have absolutely no reason,” he adds with feeling, “to offend Jews.”
Can he make up with Cannes? Or has this soured the relationship forever? “I’m quite sure it has. I like Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux [Cannes president and programming director respectively] very much and I will miss that. But – I try to see the best side of this – maybe I was producing too much with Cannes in mind. Perhaps it will give me something else to live up to instead of making films to please Cannes.”
Or perhaps it will give Cannes something to live up to, to bring a major artist, albeit handicapped with a major mouth, back into the fold of world cinema where he belongs. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/3e82a6c6-8312-11e0-85a4-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1MvobgW8C |

| Unfortunately know one knows quite what 'good art' means anymore. Our standards, codes, and figures of artistic judgment, have been obscured, or worse, corrupted. |

| ^ I'm enjoying the juxtaposition of that post with a picture of a giant shark attacking the Golden Gate bridge, I must say. |
