Something else about Gun I admire: Bond actually defends himself verbally. To wit, when Scaramanga compares himself to Bond and says "To us, Mr. Bond! We are the best.", Bond responds that they are not alike, that Bond kills only on the express orders of a duly constituted government, and that "those that I kill are themselves killers."

Most praiseworthy! And in stark contrast to postmodern Bond who, rather than defend himself against the tonguelashings of M and Natalya, for example, simply holds his peace as if he's either guilty as charged or too dumb to respond. This is one aspect of more recent Bond films that irritates me mightily.

Agreed. Plus, I rank Moore's performance in TMWTGG higher than any of Brosnan's Bond performances.

Last Bond Movie You Watched? 1.0 - Page 4 936full-moonraker-poster

The first time I watched a Bond film on my laptop computer. MR's such a fun and light Bond film that draws the viewer in and takes him for a fun ride around the world and into outer space. As fond as I am of Bond films in the OHMSS/TLD/CR vein, I'm glad the lighthearted ones like MR exist as well to make for a pleasing variety in the series.

Indeed. I think it's probably the best of the MR posters though I'm fond of this one as well-

Interesting how Chiles wanted Goodhead to Bond's equal and not be depicted as a sex object, and yet in the poster, she's dressed in a risqué manner.

Chiles was so convincing as tough chick Bond equal. A trailblazer. Eye roll.
A truly deadly operative with a slo-mo karate chop and handbag full of Secret-Agent Barbie gadgets.
I love her chipmunk face and soothing voice though.

There is nothing better on Bank Holiday Monday then watching OHMSS in glorious HD. Can't wait for the Blu-ray release next year with B23.

No, it's not confirmed but I expect them to be released around the time when B23 comes out.

Luckily, said boyfriend is not only a dangerous assassin, he's also one of the world's foremost proponents of solar energy and has stolen the world's only hope of harnessing the power source to an effective degree. With only Nick Nack and that other guy to help him, he builds an untracable palace in the middle of Red Chinese waters filled with massive solar dishes and liquid nitrogen pools, not to mention a huge funhouse full of models and cameras and the like. He also appears to own a karate dojo for Bond to be taken to, filled with recruits who as a team cant beat two schoolgirls, and a flying car. All the while Bond tracks him with the dumbest government agent in the commonwealth and a Deep South cop he's met before. You're going to need more than one heavy drink to digest that piece of crap, "benign bizarre" or not.

One of TMWTGG's biggest drawbacks for me is that they didn't just play the whole thing for so-stupid-it's-hilarious laughs, because when the comedy gets going in TMWTGG (which it only really does in fits and starts), I guiltily love the bloody film. But the film's insane comedic prowess is too sharply blunted or drably undercut when darker or more boring stuff intrudes, such as Hip's Trip or the mundane solex stuff. Ultimately, the film is one I really blow hot and cold on, to the point where I can both love the film and be bored stupid by it in the very same sitting!

THWTGG is a great mood film. John Barry does a superb job changing up the tone of the film. I especially like Bond's flight through Red China airspace towards Scaramanga's island, as well as all of the music involving Scaramanga. This music has an ominous foreboding tone.
Adams as Anders is one of the series most exotic women contrasted by Ekland's perky Goodnight.
Along with DAF and GF, this is the other Bond film that I quite often pop into the machine on whim.I guess I like the Guy Hamilton benign bizarre touch combined with the awesome Barry music.
Interestingly of the Hamilton films, LALD is the one I watch least, probably because of the lack of Barry music, although I do watch when the mood strikes. It's still got that exciting Hamilton danger-camp vibe.

Agreed on Barry's Gun score. Although Barry himself rated it poorly, it's a perfect fit for the film and contains many exceptional cues.

And as for the Benign Bizarre, the OHMSS-DAF-LALD-Gun quartet is its acme. But it can be found in all Bond films except FYEO.

Watched DN last night while getting a bit sloshed on Bell Ringer gin martinis.

:)

Very good. Particularly the first half. I started fading after Bond and Quarrel reached Crab Key.

I'm with you on the first half. I think that it's stronger than the second. The pacing is better with many fantastic moments. It feels like a neo noir. That said, the extraordinary set design, lighting and script, plus Honey and Joseph Wiseman really do create a great second half.

I dont think anyone has ruled a screen as much as Connery does in the first hour of DN. Every move he makes is simply the epitome of cool.

Dont really get the neo-noir appraisal though - in many ways Connery's ultra-assured, dominant, woman-winning professional is the anithesis of the typical noir "hero." Very much a 60s man.

I think DN is pretty much perfect in every way.I did see it a couple of years ago in cinema, in glorious digital HD as part of a digital film fest. Picture blu-ray but on a mega screen with big sound. It was something to behold. It looked as good as a brand new movie, and way better that what it might have looked like in its original screen presentation in 1962, but what really struck me was the quiet that settled over the packed theatre, when DN made his first appearance. "One million dollars Mr. Bond" I think a chill ran through the theatre and the tension remained for the entire Bond/No tete a tete. You could hear a pin drop in that theatreOne of the iconic moments in cinema. Bond and DN come face to face in No's lair. The sense of foreboding was palpable, foreshadowing the inevitable battle that was to come between these two titans of villainy and heroism.I think DN's lair and complex rivals Blofeld's volcano stronghold in the pantheon of all time best Bond villain hideouts. Honorable mention to Kanaga's set-up and ditto for Scaramanga's digs.Drax's Amazon base was pretty impresive as well.

Quantum Of Solace
quite liked the opening credit sequence, didn't mind the music
getting used to the fast cutting and shaky cam action after several viewings
didn't think Mr Whites laugh boy attitude was credible from a representative of such an organisation, he came across like some over confidant punk teenager
the action chase inside the medieval tower was appallingly shot, even after several viewings
the chase across the rooftops was cringingly derivative of a Bourne movie, as were several other sequences
Fields falling for Bond was utterly unconvincing in a movie that takes itself as seriously as this one does
Mathis was a plus, his death was a minus
there was a noticeable lack of humour, dry or otherwise, and decent repartee, when compared to Casino Royal
covering the girl in oil al la Goldfinger was a nice touch, unfortunately the guy who played Dominique Greene was not Gary Oldman
the conclusion of the dogfight was unconvincing, the parachute opening was spell breaking silly
king making is a worthy pastime for Quantum, acquiring mineral rights is a worthy pastime for Quantum, however unfortunatley cornering the market in water is not (yet)

It's come to pass. Haggfish a loyal solider of International Socialism did his part for the cause.
The forces of Pluto are already campaigning for a boycott of bottled water because evil western corporations (represented by Quantum in Bond 22) are buying up the water supplies of our brothers and sisters in the global south in order to sell it back to them. To the impressionable mind this stinks of exploitation, thus boycott bottled water. To the discerning mind (non-Pluto) it speaks to hemispheric geo-political and economic realities which aren't necessarily bad or good.

As I said elsewhere QoS is a subversive film with a distinct anti-western leftist slant. An abomination of a Bond film on so many levels.
I think a movement should be launched to strip the film from the Bond canon. Martin Campbell might be happy to lead.

I never got the sense that Quantum represented "evil" western corporations. Rather, it was a global criminal organization after the fashion of SPECTRE. I also missed the bottle water angle in QOS, though it's true that the pathos of the sainted indigenes was played up to tug at our heartstrings. More international welfar...er...developmental aid, anyone?

I agree with you to an extent about Connery here, but he still comes into contact with a fair amount of the kind of scenarios the likes of Bogart used to encounter in classic noir detective flicks, whether it's holding a lackey at gunpoint in a secluded house, handling a dark and double-crossing femme fatale and carrying out probably the most low-key, ground level, detective-like Bond assignment of the series. Probably the main reason DN is second only to OHMSS for me (but still way ahead of the other Connery Bonds IMO) is because of it's noir-evoking elements, from the creaky, direct and old-school music score to the lower-key action sequences (a short but fast car chase, a few fisticuffs here and there, all far more noir than the kind of action we'd reached by the time of GF) and the far more detective-like Bond we see in this film, a direct and to-the-point investigator as opposed to the more smug and gadget-dependent quipster of subsequent films.
