Where are Michael Apted and Marc Forster? They're far worse than the ones listed here IMHO.

No argument that Forster turned in some bad work, but even I could not dare to suggest that QUANTURD OF SOLACE was the absolute worst film. If I had a sixth slot open for nomination *maybe* I would include Forster, but definitely not Apted. Furthermore, there's a difference between making a bad film and having a film that just is not entertaining to most people.

Golden Gun is not a great film, but I can at least say it never bores me. Same with just about every other film on the list except for NSNA. Once Fatima Blush is killed the film becomes a huge snooze-fest.

My five noms would have been:

John Glen (AVTAK)
John Glen (LTK)
Roger Spottiswoode
Michael Apted
Lee Tamahori

And my pick: Lee Tamahori

Apted and Tamahori absolutely have to be in these noms. If it's a director's job to keep things together and make a decent film, then these two directors (with massive help from awful scripts) turned films with serious intentions into free-for-all schizophrenic messes, the pair of them.

I accidentally voted for Guy Hamilton - what happened to the withdraw feature?

I assume you meant the ability to cancel your vote and re-vote...I didn't include it in these polls.

I deliberately voted for Guy Hamilton. Even though TND is easily the weakest film on that list IMO, I don't really blame Spottiswoode for it. They gave him a Hollywood action movie script, so he made a Hollywood action movie. Not much else he could have done. Tonally, his film's at least consistent.

I'd have voted for Apted though, if given the option.

I voted Kershner. The fact that his movie devolved into an out of control zoo is enough. That and I can't vote for the 6 people who directed CR'67.

I would. With no trouble at all. 8)

Fairly easy decision, given that I find TMWTGG to be the worst film in the series, and that there's only one of the four Guy Hamilton directed Bond films that I actually enjoy to some degree (LALD)

Will someone who was going to vote for Guy Hamilton please vote for John Glen instead, so we can even up my accidental miscast?

My vote would go to Lee Tamawhori but Spottiswoode also deserves equal recognition.

I can only cast votes for Forster or Apted. I'm generally pleased or not bothered by the efforts of any of the others.
In fact I am very pleased with Hamilton's work in all 4 of his films. Same with Gilbert, Young and Hunt. These 4 are the great classic-era Bond directors.
Glenn IMO did a decent job as well, as did Campbell, Spottiswoode and Tamahori.
Apted and Forster however created Bond soap operas. Not my cup of Bond.

I went with Glen - though to be fair, many of the problems I have with his films are also the fault of Michael G. Wilson's writing. And Glen didn't re-hire himself after A View to a Kill, so Cubby Broccoli has to take some of the blame, too.

I voted Guy Hamilton because TMWTGG is my least favourite Bond...though in all honesty I think Spottiswood brings least to the table.

Oooh, 1st post on Bond and Beyond.

I do agree that there was little original about Spottiswoode's outing, but ultimately he turned out a film (that while I personally don't like it) was polished and professional despite the script issues that dogged pre-production.

For the sake of the poll I'm going to have to with my old whipping boy Glen. I felt his first entry was the best, and the others all ended up being variations of a theme. Not his fault entirely of course, but the days of Bond director ever helming two-in-a-row should be long consigned to history. I've no problem with directors doing multiple entries (both Campbell and Gilbert got it right by leaving and returning) but there should be a gap. Both Hamilton and Glenn prove to me that going back to the same directorial well only leads to a lessening in quality.

None of the above. It's Michael Apted, for sure. TWINE is a stunningly inept film.

And why on earth is Gilbert listed there?

Lewis Gilbert's films are some of best looking and directed in the franchise.

Double-taking pigeon; Jaws flapping his arms like a wounded bird; Jaws making funny faces as he goes over waterfall; Jaws walking away from tram car crash hand-in-hand with mute girl he just met; Bond enjoying romantical boat ride in the canals of Venice...all by himself....I could go on. The film, while magnificent in many ways, is much like SUPERMAN III: always looking for the joke rather than trying to convince us of the fantasy by playing it a bit more straight.

Still, Kershner's effort in NSNA wins the prize because the other films, while having huge faults, never commit the sin of being totally boring. Once Fatima Blush is killed off all of the energy in the film dissipates with her.

Gilbert's work on MR is still vastly superior to Richard Lester's on the Superman series IMHO.

Truth. Another reason the original TB with master Bond director Terence Young is vastly superior to its 18 years later non-official remake. It's also interesting that Kim Basinger became the bigger star post-NSNA than Barbara Carrera who I always preferred of the 2 NSNA leading ladies.
