Well, I tried to watch THIEF, but the picture quality of the DVD is so bad it's unwatchable. Every time someone moves, there's a blur. Criterion, make a Blu-ray of this damnit.

I'm holding out for a better release.

Great to see this thread, but don't be oblivious of this one:

Hopefully, the Blu Player won't cause the same effects with my old Mann disks. :affraid:

I skimmed all through the pages, but didn't see it.

As for Blu. Both of my MANHUNTER DVD's look fine on my Blu-ray player. I also have HEAT on Blu, which of course looks great.

I watched Heat the other day. Brilliant, hypnotic and intriguing crime thriller that had the guts to give everybody a degree of depth, including the villains. DeNiro and Pacino were on top form and on the 2-DVD set, you will find some informative interviews, including one which mentions the real Neil MacAuley and the police officer who took him down, Chuck Adamson.

I've watched some of PUBLIC ENEMIES tonight. May watch some more tonight, or maybe tomorrow. The one thing that sticks in my craw is this damned digital photography. I get not making the film nostaglic. I'm all for that. But it looks like shit!

Nice cast, though. I'm already interested in the subject matter, so it's entertaining. But it doesn't feel like a movie.

Yeah Michael Mann is one of my favorite filmmakers. I love that he doesn't feel the need to sacrifice a strong, thrilling narrative in favor of visual poetry. His films are all brilliantly shot (in my opinion) and it's obvious that he puts a lot of thought into his visuals (many shots have thematic/emotional weight, even those without characters) but never forsakes character and story. He's the total package as far as I'm concerned.

I'd watch an entire film consisting only of his night-time establishing shots. He shoots cities better than almost anyone.
