PostSubject: The AFL thread   The AFL thread EmptyTue Oct 25, 2011 1:24 pm

Since all you strange people in the rest of the world can talk about your strange football codes that involve things like this "offside" thing and helmets and things, I figured (even though we're at the start of the off-season and now isn't the best time) that the Australian Football League deserves a thread.

Now... I know the audience for this on here is going to be very small. Very small indeed. First, there's the Australians. Then you've got to filter out those who live on the other side of the Barassi line, and are more interested in that Thugby stuff. Then you've got to filter out those who live on the civilized side of the Barassi line, and have the gumption to not actually care about our great game. So I think I've made this thread for Colly and myself, and Colly's off galavanting about across the known universe. Nevermind, it can be put in mothballs until the proper time.

To anyone who isn't familiar with our great game, it is a placid sport, always played with the height of self-preservation...

...and nary is there a moment of thuggery seen...

...but if there are differences, they are often solved in a most genteel manner.

The skills are elite, with pin-point accuracy always on show...

...and with minimal interference from the umpires.

Unfortunately, sometimes there are inconsiderate types who insist on detracting from the game by doing something noticeable.

But that doesn't happen too often.

So come, my Aussie brethren, and important off-season topics such as the fixture, the draft, and the slight imperfections of certain guernseys can be discussed in detail.

Or you can all just piss off. :| (Genuine Australian football supporter attitude™️).

Funny thing is, I've probably been following the AFL more closely than usual since I've been overseas - everytime I checked into an internet cafe I checked the footy news, especially during trade week. And of course there's today, in which I've spent hours on the internet because Hamburg's fucking boring and my flight to Ireland isnt til tomorrow.

As for great marks... gotta be Ablett over Pert in '94. Even if its extremely debatable over whether he took it or not. ;)

Ablett didn't control it all the way! Seriously, that one always irks me. If only the ball hadn't flown out when he hit the ground.

I stand by my decision. The Moorcroft one is amazing, and no, I'm not just being one-eyed. Ended his career, though. (Sheeds still managed to convince Melbourne he had something left, which is hilarious. Typically Freo was his target for those sorts of shenanigans).

In terms of recent ones, seeing the Walker grab live was amazing. None of the shots on TV do it justice. It made what was a pretty arduous experience worthwhile. Even my father, who despises anything to do with the Carlton Football Club with a burning passion and has taught me to do likewise since birth, stood up and applauded that one. How it didn't win MOTY is beyond me.

Trade Week was hilarious. Most hoopla surrounding a 2-game player ever, methinks. I subjected myself to having Craig Hutchison and Damien Barrett's online radio show on all week. They had Terry Wallace, of all people, dishing out advice on what constituted savvy trading, who were the winners and who were the losers. Hilarious stuff. Not to mention all the Carlton supporters calling in and suggesting that Waite and a pick, or even Bower and a pick would be enough to net Goddard.

(Also, damn you and your infernal jet-setting. Even the boring stuff sounds more exciting than what I'm stuck with).

When I first saw this thread I thought: "Why is someone posting about an old, defunct league?"

The AFL in the United States used to stand for American Football League; it was the competitor and chief rival to the NFL before they merged back in the 60's. No other league since then has been able to put a dent in the NFL's profits and stature; not the XFL, and not the USFL.

Yes, well, this used to be the VFL (Victorian Football League), but then a bunch of teams from other states decided they wanted in so we had to become a "national" competition.

...a "national" competition in which half of the teams are Victorian.

Still, the history is continuous, so this comp has been around a lot longer than any of your American leagues. ;) (I think)

One-eyed I may be, and I wasnt there... but Walker`s mark doesnt seem all that remarkable to me - look up any video on youtube of the top 10 marks from 2000/2001/2002/whatever, theres plenty of a similar quality. What sets Ablett and indeed Moorecroft's marks apart to me is that they're unique. And theyve got the accompanying commentary to go with them that just makes the moment so awesome.

Speaking of awesome...

Went looking for a Hird highlights video, found this awesome one. What a legend. And yep, he shops where I work, so I've had the honour of pointing the man in the direction of coriander, or bread rolls, from time to time.

I played kick-to-kick with the great man many moons ago. Something to be cherished.

Great highlights package, that. Although "the hug" should have been saved till last. I wish I'd been there to see it.

Even now he's producing gold. The win over Geelong this year was one of the great football experiences I've had. Although, I guess, everyone attributes that to Thompson. Apparently you need "inside information" to know that making Scarlett accountable is going to have an impact.

The weird thing about having Hirdy as senior coach though is that I have this feeling that for him to actually coach Essendon to a premiership would just be way too good to be true. Buckley could fall ass-backwards into one next year with the team he's got, and Voss is doing his utmost to make Brisbane resemble mid-90s Fitzroy, so... it'll be interesting when the dust has settled and all three can be judged again for their coaching careers.

RE: Walker's mark, yes it probably wasn't that difficult, but it was more the time he spent up there, and the picturesque nature of it. I agree that Tim Lane's limp commentary doesn't help, but the footage of it just doesn't quite capture it.

That being said, it was grossly overrated in the pantheon of great marks. Shaun Smith's s***s all over it, in terms of that similar high chest mark. Then you've got your Sampis and all those Modra ones et cetera et cetera. It was better that Krakouer's, though. So was Naitanui's and Petterd's, I thought.

Hamburg boring?
the Reeperbahn is the best entertainment district in Germany, and I don't just mean red light entertainment
but maybe you need to be with a German native to find the best of it
and theres not much to fill in the daylight hours, although I'm sure it's a decent enough place to live
