| - Spoiler:
We have it from a fairly iron-clad source (a member of the Skyfall team) that there’s going to be a fairly momentous death in the next Bond film.
“We’ve just filmed M’s death scene. Judi Dench is leaving the franchise.”

| If it's true, then I hope this doesn't mean the final scenes involve Bond and Eve scattering M's ashes over London. |

| Not the end of the world this, though, is it?
What's leading up to it - emotionally - might potentially be puke-inducing, however... |

There are many pitfalls and one hopes Mendes and the writers - as well as Craig and Dench - avoid them. My biggest reservation is that its yet ANOTHER woman Craig's lost in a shortlength of time (and he didn't consumate with Camille), chuck in any Bond backround story we might be getting with the "ancestoral home!" stuff (lost parents, orphaned) AND the way Craig and Dench's relationship has played twice before.... and we could be in for a whee bit too much melodramatic angst for my taste in Bond. Fingers crossed. |

Lots of people clamoring for Dench to leave, yet I'm sure a lot of people will also complain about killing her off as being "too emo" or whatever.

When stated that way....then yes, I would have reservations. I'm wondering exactly how Bond's allegedly dead parents figure into M's life (and possible death). As I said a few times before around here, I think SKYFALL will either be the greatest Bond film since TLD...or it will collapse under the weight of its own melodrama. I don't see much middle ground here. This will be the most brilliant Bond film, with the highest pedigree of writing, directing, and acting we've ever seen in the series, or it will be crushed by the decisions Barbara has made, and all the little things that some of us have been complaining about will snowball into this one horrendous film. |

Agree totally. Wonder if that might result in box office "failure", and Craig's departure, and a new, lighter direction? Interesting. |

The answer is it depends. Under this scenario: - Spoiler:
M's death comes across as a blatant attempt to try and get an Oscar, especially because it would involve a popular actress (who has won previously) who's facing health problems (her eyesight). Under this scenario, even though who most wanted Dame Judi will have to confront "be careful of what you wish for" ...
.....in which case they'll be unhappy both ways. |

| To me, Judy's M gets to leave with a bang, it's never been done before with a sitting M. I'm okay with it and hope it's done well.

| Here's my issue with the whole thing, it's a one-and-done plot device. We won't (or should I shouldn't) see it used ever again in another Bond film. They have to do it right. Now, the question truly is, which do you focus more on M's death or Bond's reaction to M's death? |

One of my favourite death sequences in a film was Alan Tudyk's Wash in SERENITY. It was so good because the characters were faced by an overwhelming situation, and so they never really had time to process it. They did in the end, of course, but at the time, the film explored how the characters addressed his death when they were faced with an enemy onslaught. So I think it would work really well if M was killed off quickly, and Bond witnessed it, but was otherwise occupied. I suspect the final act of the film will revolve around Bond trying to protect M, so this would give the opportunity for the film to look at how Bond deals with failing an assignment, which he has never really done before. |

Both...can't say why one should outweigh the other. We're told this is a story about Bond's loyalty to M being tested, not a revenge one...so I doubt her death comes early on. But it better not be some cheap shit either, let her go in a blaze of glory of some sort... Vesper's death led to Bond showing some true emotion...Mathis got put in a dumpster...how Bond reacts to M's death remains to be seen... |

They have to do it right, and they have to do it right now. With Dench's age and health, there's no guarantee she'd be able to do another film, and if you want to use the death of M as a plot device, it has to be with an actor or actress whom the audience likes and is familiar with. EON's window of opportunity is closing and won't reopen, I'd say, for another 10 years or so (assuming there's a 3 to 4 Bond films in between). At least with M's presence in the past 7 films increasing, and Dench being a household name in the U.K. and the U.S., there's a chance this death could be done properly. But if we get a scene where Dench turns into Jim Phelps from 1996's Mission Impossible, I'm going to pull my pants down in the theater and do #2 as a sign of protest (and in hopes of the video showing up on Tosh.0). Let Dench's M die with dignity and for her country and with respect. Also, I want to see Bond cradling her in his arms and gently wiping her tears away with his Tom Ford handkerchief. |

I was thinking the same but I think the Mathis image is still so fresh in my head. By the way, this could be the perfect clip for a new Tom Ford ad campaign. "Tom Ford. It's Enough to Make a Dame Cry" |

Would Babs dare have Craig's Bond toss M's body into a dumpster? Onto a sanitation barge? Even I don't think Babs is that stupid. I'm hoping Babs learned something from the problems that people had with QOS. |
