| Something I forgot was Bond sitting in his room with a drink and his gun waiting for the enemy. Nice little touch. |

| not tickled as such but they leapt out this time round.
Bond weighing up what to do with his £15,000 of winnings, in his office.
(1) Rolls-Bentley Convertible, say £5000. (2) Three diamond clips at £250 each, £750. He paused. That still left nearly £10,000. Some clothes, paint the flat, a set of the new Henry Cotton irons, a few dozen of the Taittinger champagne. But those could wait. He would go that afternoon and buy the clips and talk to Bentley's. Put all the rest into gold shares. Make a fortune. Retire.
And towards the end as he outlines his plans against Gala's objections.
"Don't be ridiculous", said Bond impatiently. "What the hell is there else to do? The explosion will be so terrific that one won't feel anything. And it's bound to work with all that fuel vapour hanging around. It's me or a million people in London. The warhead won't go off. Atom bombs don't explode like that. It'll be melted probably. There's just a chance you may get away. Most of the explosion will take the line of least resistance through the roof -and down the exhaust pit, if I can work the machinery that opens up the floor." He smiled. "Cheer up," he said, walking over to her and taking one of her hands. "The boy stood on the burning deck. I've wanted to copy him since I was five."
--
Now, as curious I tried to find a way to figure out Bond's money. Handily the National Archives have a currency converter that lets you go back to 1270 and compare it to 2017 figures. Handily 1955 is one option. So without looking around here's a quick skip.
Bond's salary of £1500 per year equates (in 2017) to nearly £36,000
His winnings of £15,000 equate to nearly £358,000.
Thus his 10,000 left is about 238,000.
Curiously the Archive page shows what you could buy with this money as I guess in 1270, money was being spent on other things, so if Bond's £10,000 isn't used on his flat it could apparently buy:
39 horses 148 cows 2252 stones of wool 1672 quarters of wheat and gain 7042 days of wages for skilled tradesmen
Now you know. |

| Also from OHMSS, something like: "You'll have a drink, and I'll have three - that's the right ratio between men and women."
I read recently that 2-1 (and no more) is a healthy ratio, but we are talking Fleming here.

| Nice pick AMC, as you say we are talking Fleming. Some line in DAF I think said that proven fact that homosexuals can't whistle.
OHMSS in particular seems quite good for single lines, punchy lines. |

That's from Scaramanga' dossier. "The seventieth position! And invented by an Englishman!" Mathis in FRWL, when he sees Bond has Klebb pinned with a chair. |

| a testament to the book or rather Fleming that it still is a marvel in its way.
Bond stubbed out his cigarette, gave a quick glance round their trysting-place to fix its banality in his mind, and walked to the door, leaving the fragments of an airport breakfast.
Any other time the airport scene and Bond with M at Quarterdeck on Christmas Day would have been sublime on film. Dalton's Bond narrowed eyed peering through a veil of cigarette smoke as M talked about the navy. Lazenby and Rigg, heads close, at an airport dining table. |

| You left out the poignant part, Hilly:
...leaving the fragments of his old life torn up amidst the debris of an airport breakfast.
Mathis was always good for a chuckle; from Casino Royale:
Mathis fiddled at the back of the set. Suddenly an appalling roar of static filled the small room. Mathis gazed at the set for a few seconds with benevolence and then turned it off and his voice was full of dismay.

Mathis was wonderfully written in CR. Shame we didn't get a proper CR adaptation in the late 50s/early 60s |

| Flicking through Goldfinger and early on you have the delight that is Bond's chapter with Du Pont. What makes it so is from that first line.
Bond liked anonymity. His 'yes it is' was discouraging.
Pre-OHMSS and Bond sat there not feeling too proud of himself as he recounts what he did in Mexico. |

To have that kind of reflection in SP after Day of the Dead would have been too much for Craig. |

| Couple of bits for different reasons tickle so far in GF.
this bit as it chimed with the idea I am working out in my latest story (Another Life to Go, set now-ish):
Station H might be stirring up a hornets' nest, but M had decided it was time to show the opposition that the Service in Hong Kong hadn't quite gone out of business.
but this bit made me smile, after Bond overtakes a saloon on his way to Kent:
The man at the wheel, who wore that infallible badge of the bad driver, a hat clamped firmly on the exact centre of his head, hooted angrily. Bond reached out of the window and raised an enigmatically clenched first. The hooting stopped.
partly as it reminds me of Carry On Cabby (Comedy film), where Sid James' taxi driver honks at another car and a v sign is flicked out of a window back and quips: "Oh, an experienced driver!" |

What would his Bond do? Craig: Bond reaches out the window and raises an enigmatically clenched fist. He slows his car down, driving parallel to the tooter. Bond punches through the other car's window and strangles the driver. M crackles through his earpiece and lectures him about trust or something. |

| If we still have some sort of presence, SIS wise, in HK, it must be up to its neck in it. I've not read into it, but I imagine losing HK as a territory would've knocked our efforts. I could see us reliant on visiting ships -as you see in DAD- being used in some way but obviously SIS would have better ways.
The Craig scenario works but only if somewhere in the middle he accidentally plays an Elton John song prior to smashing his window and killing the driver. |

It would be underground, hidden. Bit like Bey's rug shop in Istanbul. |

| It was going to be fun playing hare and hounds across Europe. The sun was shining out of a clear sky. Bond felt a moment's sharp thrill down his spine. He smiled to himself, a hard, cold, cruel smile. Goldfinger, he thought, for the first time in your life you're in trouble- bad trouble.
and after he learns of Jill's death.
Bond closed his eyes tight, fighting with a wave of mental nausea. More death! More blood on his hands. This time, as a result of a careless gesture, a piece of bravado that had led to twenty-four hours of ecstasy with a beautiful girl who had taken his fancy and, in the end, rather more than his fancy.
I dare suggest the above latter quote makes me forever a fan of Dalton's Bond. |

| Largo's intro:
He was a Roman, not from the Rome of today, but from the Rome of the ancient coins. The large, long face was sunburned a deep mahogany brown and the light glinted off the strong rather hooked nose and the clean cut lantern jaw that had been meticulously shaved before he had started out late that afternoon.

| Bond still not keen on things.
It was a sparkling, beautiful day and Bond's heart lifted momentarily from the trough of indecision and despondency created by an assignment that, particularly since his arrival at dawn that day, seemed increasingly time-wasting and futile.
and Felix's words on life.
Planes with atom bombs don't get stolen in real life. Except that they do. You're slowing down, James. How many people would believe the files on some of the cases you and I have got mixed up in? Don't give me that crap about real life. There ain't no such animal. |

| Working on DAF.
"Do you mind if I smoke?" he said, taking a cigarette out his case and putting a cigarette in his mouth. "Sure, if that's the way you want to die."
"Got a passport? -Well, I have," admitted Bond, "but it's in my real name. -Oh," she was suspicious again. "And what might that be?" "James Bond." She snorted. "Why not choose John Doe?"
It might not be my favourite, but Tiff is a good character. Well written. |
