PHANTOM is my next De Palma, when I get around to it. I haven't seen it yet.

Don't know if I could to a top list of De Palma.

1. CARRIE
2. BLOW OUT

That's all I can do. laugh

I can tell you the films that I really like personally, that really click with me.

BODY DOUBLE
CARLITO'S WAY
FEMME FATALE
RAISING CAIN (Re-cut)

Those that oddly leave me cold.

SISTERS
OBSESSION

I enjoy these...

THE FURY
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE
SCARFACE

And then there's THE UNTOUCHABLES, that doesn't really do it for me. Over ten years ago it was one of my favorite movies.

THE BLACK DAHLIA is a wild card.

-----

Fort Apache (1948)

I'm gonna watch a number of 50's westerns soon, but I' going through some late 40's Ford first. I wish I had watched FORT APACHE this morning, as it's a perfect Saturday morning movie to me. Actually, I love watching classic, black-and-white Hollywood films on a sunny morning more than at any other time for some reason. May sound weird.

Grand motion picture, though. Kinda meanders, but has the Ford magic working. I find Victor McLaglen to be incredibly entertaining. The only actor I can think of who's like him now is Ray Winstone. Winstone can be jovial, and very tough and tumble. McLaglen looks like a man who could roll down the side of the Grand Caynon, reach the bottom, get up, dust himself off, proceed to drink any modern Hollywood actor under the table, and then climb back up the canyon.

I find it hard to watch a movie a second time unless I really like it. Generally my first impressions are what I keep, and a second viewing just puts those impressions into more focus. Sometimes I love a movie the second time and not the first. Some of my favorites are like that, but I'm usually drawn to those second viewings because of some kind of interest.

I've thought about not posting the movies I watch. I don't really get in-depth in my thoughts, and I figure not too people care anyway. laugh

I am trying to increase my viewings, though. I've seen nearly 200 films this year. Only 115 are first viewings. I should aim for a higher rate of first viewings.

The Stranger

This could have been a primitive evil-nazi-bashing flick with lots of nonsense that resembles nothing in real life, but since its making lay in the hands of a director with an unusually great talent, it didn't turn out to be a piece of crap. The guy - played very well by said director himself - isn't over-proportionally demonized. The characterization he gives of himself, indirectly, fits more or less that of a nazi in such a high position that Rankin (Kindler) had back in Nazi Germany. A pretty well-thought-out, tense, very well photographed, finely acted and directed crime/noir film. No real complaints on first inspection.
I now own 4 Welles-directed films on DVD, two more I've recorded from TV, THE TRIAL - finally released here in its uncut version! - is in my Amazon cart; it will be hard to get a hold of CHIMES (since I don't want to acquire a credit card), and I'm not sure if I should buy MACBETH.

The first and best of the 1989-1997 series. I really appreciate the fact that there's only one main villain for Batman to oppose, unlike the other 3 were they seem to get overcrowded with characters.

Now that's more like it, Mr Wayne

The Saint's Double Trouble/The Saint Takes Over/The Saint in Palm Springs

the last of the Sanders adventures and all relatively bouncy and charming in their way. Paul Guilfoyle is a good act alongside Sanders though imagine Moore lose in Palm Springs.

Cotillard and Hathaway have nothing on Anna Faris in The House Bunny! :)

The House Bunny, 2008. Super funny. Faris plays Bunny who gets too old. You'll laugh your bunny-ears off.

Easy A (2010) Funniest performance ever by a leading actress, Emma Stone. Even better than Faris in House Bunny. Stone is one hell of an actress. Man is she funny in this wacky but very smart film. Stone steals every scene. She's got a great career ahead of her.

One of all-time great high-school comedies. Comedic take on The Scarlett Letter theme.

Devil (2010) From M. Night Shyamalan. First entry in his Night Chronicles series. Scared the jeepers out of me.

A group of people are trapped in an elevator and the Devil is mysteriously amongst them.

These people are all seriously screwed!

Monkey Business (1952)

I rarely enjoy comedies. I like films that have comedic elements, but I find that straight comedies just don't hold my interest. I did not laugh once during this movie, and I actually found it a chore to sit through. Much like the torture of sitting through YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU last year. Maybe I'm just a jerk.

I like screwball as an idea.

The Reader

Winslet nude, film passable, but not particularly compelling. Still, somewhat better than the novel.

Sisters

Partially reminiscent of PSYCHO, more so of REAR WINDOW, perhaps some unidentified (since yet unseen) Argento, foreshadowing DEAD RINGERS.
I liked it. DEAD RINGERS has more psychological pretensions, but SISTERS is more interesting and tense. I didn't fully get it, the ending is a bit of a letdown, but before that a lot of well-thought-out and directed stuff. Some day the p. i. is going to return, isn't he? Or am I missing something?
I'd probably rank it one spot below CAIN.

Today, two more De Palma DVDs arrived [ :D ], two are still on their way (three of the bunch I haven't seen yet, well one maybe when I was a small kid, but not sure about that). One De Palma recorded from TV on Sunday (yet unseen). So, you know what's awaiting you the following days. tongue

Last night I watched Donner's SUPERMAN, the theatrical cut. I'll look at the extended one soon as I've not seen it in years. But I enjoyed the movie more than ever. Safe to say it's probably my favorite superhero movie at the moment. It was an extremely enjoyable viewing for me.

Yeah, it's got a few flaws, but it's sorta reached a threshold for me where I just kinda roll with the flaws. Kidder's little poem strikes me as a nice idea, but she sounds drunk. That jump to the missile reprograming sequence remains a little jarring. BATMAN BEGINS has a similar moment for me, when we learn that the Super Microwave of Death has been stolen. Both films have a nice rhythm going, and it's like being sideswiped. We go from seeing Lex and co. planning to do A and then we jump to them doing B, learning in passing dialogue after they do B that they have already done A.

Spartacus (1960) Stanley Kubrick, director

Epic, not only with Kirk Douglas, but also Olivier and Jean Simmons, not to mention Laughton and Ustinov. What a cast. Settle in for 3 hours plus and enjoy!
