| Just in case this becomes the hub of movie talk for MI6 vets. I have half a mind to go tell everyone on nuMI6 to get their asses over here.
I watched CASABLANCA. Then the site got nuked. It was the end of a beautiful friendship. |

| We need FD.
I gave nuMI6 for review for THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, but if we get some old pros on here I may bargain the rights to me reviews over here. Along with some other projects I got planned. ;) |

I could keep this B*****D running on Shawn Levy and Ed Zwick films alone. As it stands, I had literally made my last post on mi6 for a while before this happened. It's sabbatical time. You can do without my clueless, meandering paragraphs of nonsense for the time being. |

| While I agree, it just isn't the same having Sharky without an avatar of an octogenarian Moore. |

| I have mixed feelings about yours, MP. Its awesome on the one hand, but on the other it reminds me that "Our Man Sykes" is GONE -- the greatest loss of all, obviously. |

| It's temporary. I wanted a quick avatar when I joined so when I came across this it seemed like a natural. Plus I like that I don't have to wait for years for new submissions being uploaded, and no copyright policy either! So expect a new one soon. |

| "Let Me In"
I was really amazed at how great of a film this was. Looks like Hammer's on the right track! |

I wanted to see "Let The Right One In", after your recommendation a couple of months back. Unfortunately, the rental store didn't have it last night, so I went with the remake. Overall, I'd have to say it was low-key. I look forward to comparing it to the original at some point. Also, I was able to catch "The Killer Inside Me" last month. It was well done. Never thought I'd say that about a film featuring Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. |

That film told the story of when I met them. |

I saw Psycho outdoors at Butler Field Grant Park in 2009. Struck me afterwards that that was how the film was meant to be seen, in a sleazy drive-in, not some stuffy film institute. |

| Psycho is a terrific movie. Not Hitch's best, but still terrific. |

Me too. Although it's probably about as un-challenging as you can get. Been a while since I've watched it - something may have usurped it. Probably Mr. & Mrs. Smith, y'know. Apocalypse Now (1979)Dir. Francis Ford Coppola Finally got to see the theatrical version, which puts "Redux" to shame, honestly. It's pretty amazing on BD, although I'd love to see it on the big screen at some stage. Kilgore's attack in particular - that's like something a lesser filmmaker would put together with special effects. And it's all real. The photography need not really be mentioned, although I'd forgotten how... Gordon Willis-ey Storaro gets at times. I think the film's mostly kept at eye-level as well, for that matter. This is probably one of the few war epics that would qualify as art. And it's difficult to watch any other Vietnam flicks after it. Coppola-O-Meter:1. The Godfather Part II2. The Godfather3. Apocalypse Now4. The Conversation5. The Godfather Part III6. The Rainmaker7. Tetro8. The Outsiders9. Rumble Fish10. One From the Heart11. Dracula12. Youth Without YouthTen Minutes Older: The Cello (2002)I don't know why I keep getting sucked into watching these portmanteau films. They're just not worth it. I liked the Schlöndorff segment, and maybe one or two of the others. Radford's seemed interesting, but it really isn't. Figgis' is intolerable. The Menzel and Godard ones, using stock footage, are unusual. I can't really remember the rest of them. Nor do I particularly want to. I'm sure I'll watch more of these, but for the life of me... I dunno why. |

| VERTIGO's his most personal, undoubtedly. Though I've also got of a lot of love for LIFEBOAT and THE BIRDS.
Sat through TOPAZ the other day, though. Bloody terrible. It takes ages for anything of note to happen, and when it does... I don't give a S***. A bunch of cardboard cutouts walking around, with a forgettable Maurice Jarre score. |

The bit where Dean Vernon kills Helga Brandt is excellent. That's about it. I guess Torn Curtain is the same deal, when Newman kills that dude, but then that's also got the bus scene. And... Paul Newman. |

| I defend TORN CURTAIN. I think it's workable. I think it shows Hitch's talent in a strange way because even though every other element failed him (DP, ....composer...., script, actors he didn't want, etc) he still turned out what I think is a watchable and at least mildly interesting movie. Those other elements weren't awful on their own to me, but after his run of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN through MARNIE, they were very subpar for Hitchcock. I think his direction is the best thing about the film. He's sorta doing what he knows, employing the tricks he knows. It's a lesser film, but I still think it speaks of him knowing what the hell he's doing.
If it had been Joe H. Workman directing, it might be looked at more kindly.
I've got a hankering to watch it. Ya know, some movies you've just got a soft spot for even if you know they don't add up to as much. With TORN CURTAIN, I think it's quality is a relative thing. Is it NORTH BY NORTHWEST? No. Is it technically better than a lot of what you would see now in the thriller genre? Probably. And it probably beats most director's stabs at a Hitchcock homage or pastiche.
Add to that, it's a Hitchcock movie. I'm not saying everything he did was great, but most everything he did was at least interesting and worth seeing because virtually all of his films have at least one scene or moment worth the price of admission.

| Haven't seen all of Hitch's work, but I loved North By Northwest, Rope, Vertigo, and Notorious. I enjoyed The 39 Steps, Dial M for Murder, Frenzy, and Foreign Correspondent. I f*cking hated Marnie. With a passion. |
