| Silent movie-era romance The Artist was the biggest winner at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ceremony in London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday with seven awards, including best film, adding another prestigious trophy to its growing collection just two weeks before the Oscars.

Crock of shit in the flavor of the month. a la The King's Speech no doubt. Good to see Tinker win some things if not exactly what I hoped, rather Gary Oldman win Best Actor than anyone. Hope against hope that TTSS would have won Original Music. Good to see John Hurt honoured to a point, Christina Hendricks doing her bit for gravity, Harvey Weinstein filling up two seats, Colin Firth dashing to Streep's rescue, Clooney looking bemused throughout (I wasted a plane ticket here) and that woman who kept coming on to get folk off stage. Even if the Beeb News felt the need to tell us who had won before airing the cursed thing. Oh, obligatory bow to Christopher Plummer in absentia. |

| It was a good show, although I think it suffers a bit from British reserve and a certain stiffness - a few campy, showbizzy elements would help to loosen and liven it up (that said, I missed Tom Jones' performance, which for all I know added those elements). I know that it isn't supposed to compete with the Oscars, but it would be nice for it to move a little towards the ballpark of being able to compete with the Oscars.
I mean, is this screened in the States/internationally at all? The Baftas have always been parochial, perhaps too parochial. Nothing wrong with parochialism, I guess, but at the same time I don't see the harm in this event reaching out towards the rest of the world a bit more. Perhaps I'm wrong (as a Brit it may be that I don't see the wood for the trees on this issue), but people all around the globe don't take note of the Baftas the way they do the Oscars or Cannes.
Stephen Fry was an excellent host. I thought TINKER would sweep the board so it was nice to have a few surprises. A pity they didn't have a SKYFALL teaser trailer to screen at the awards, though.

| I'd never even heard of this movie, seen it play here in this metropolitan of 4 million people nor seen the trailers for it! |

| Moment of the night was John Hurt's acceptance speech. Everything else was predictable. |

except for that bounder from the Attack the Block film plunging right off the stage to return to his seat despite Stephen Fry calling after him. But then he had just kissed Christina Hendricks so I guess he was blinded and confused. |
