Oscars to feature James Bond 50th Anniversary tribute

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday that the 85th Oscars will feature a televised tribute to the 007 franchise's 50th anniversary.

"We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday," said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. "Starting with Dr. No back in 1962, the 007 movies have become the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon."

The franchise, which currently features Daniel Craig as the cocky, immensely talented spy, was revived with 2006's Casino Royale and hit a high note with this year's Skyfall. A gritty take on the MI6 legend, the Sam Mendes-directed film recently hit over $1 billion at the box office worldwide, and earned a Producers' Guild Award nomination that could push it toward an Oscar bid.

The series' 23 films have featured several men in the role of Bond, starting with Sean Connery and moving on to George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and now Craig, who has starred in three 007 films thus far.

Shouldn't this have been last year?

Last year, this year--apparently one bill finally made the Academy sit up and take notice of what a culturally important phenomenon the Bond franchise is. I'd say they're about a quarter century slow on the uptake.

I hear Sony is sending out Skyfall Screener DVD to the Academy hoping that the film will be considered for Best Picture or Best Director or Best Latest Crappy Bond Film.

You heard wrong, they sent a copy of The World is Not Enough to be considered for Best Latest Crappy Bond Film.

Hopefully it will appear in isolation on YouTube or the like at some stage ... can't really be bothered sitting through the rest of the Oscars to see it.

Of course, this could just be a pat on the back for not getting a Best Picture nod, so we'll see how that turns out.

I'm thinking this, too.

They'll probably neglect SKYFALL, awards-wise, but make up for it with a tribute.

And, hey, that's not all that bad, either. If SKYFALL can get this close to the Oscars, maybe it'll give Babs & Co. incentive to make more great Bond films in the future. Focus on pleasing the adults from now on.

Yep. No way in Hell I'll sit through an entire Oscar ceremony, even for Bond.

PS--I doubt the nominations are even in yet, so this tribute should not be a sop in lieu of nominations for SF.

it's become something of a tradition in these parts for myself, Brown, Harms, Tux, Python, Wade and others to down booze, watch the Oscars life and give Mystery Science Theater 3000-style commentary to it. We used BaB's chatbox last year, which worked out very well.

Fenruary 24th. I remember searching for live streaming sites was a bit of a nighmare, with the copyright Stasi shutting them down one by one.

Having said that, this year's host is Seth McFarlane ... you'd hope he'd be allowed to take the piss at least a LITTLE (although the amount of leeway Ricky Gervais was given on the Golden Globes hosting seems unlikely).

Rumor is that all 6 Bonds might take the stage together at the Oscar's. Not sure if there is any validity to it, probably not.... but it would be nice to see.

With the 50th anniversary passing by, this could be their only chance to ever get on stage together. You'd think Sir Sean is at least happy to be part of a legacy that has lasted as long as half of cinema's lifetime. It's time to suck up that Scottish stubbornness for just one time I think. Stand up with Craig, take a bow and then leave it all behind for good. It's a better way of going out than NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, which even Connery hated.
