You can understand his grievance, though. He as effectively fired from the role.

No, I can't understand his grievance. He was saved by EON from doing more made-for-USA-Network movies like "Death Train". He had a contract for four movies and did them. He was made into a movie star when he wasn't one, and was playing supporting roles to Robin Williams and Jeff Fahey. He owes the Bond series more than they probably owe him. It made him millions. It also helped him make enough money so that he could do "smaller", "more intimate" films (like Evelyn) that nobody wanted to see, but made Brosnan feel good about producing.

Yes he essentially got fired. But so what? Everyone gets fired at some point in their career. He took a job from Timothy Dalton. It's life. It's business. After 10 years one sort of expects the man to grow up, but he continues to act like a baby's diaper. I can't believe I ever thought this guy was the 2nd best Bond. What a piece of trash.

The simple video montage was pitiful. They should have dropped the show's endless amount of musical numbers and just made it a Dame Shirley concert. :D

If all or some had appears it would have been stilted and rather awkward, just like most of the other presenters that evening.

Where did all the Pierce vitriol come from? Did I miss something? Though there was never a a contract inked, it was a pretty abrupt split and we may not know all the dealings but it is understandable for him to have bad feelings.
His comments in Everything or Nothing reflected his coming around and benefits of hindsight.

Apparently there was more that was originally planned for the tribute, but according to what I've read, during rehearsals and run-throughs, the show was already close to 4 hours, so there may have been ideas that were rehearsed but then dropped, or never got past the planning stages. Also, the reunion aspect of the show, which fell apart, was a major foundation for the tribute. I guess when it dissolved much of the tribute went with it. Hard to believe the campy 1982 tribute to 007 was more substantial than the 2013/50th anniversary tribute (and on a night when SF took home two Oscars).

Where did Pierce's vitriol come from? Good question. I suspect some of it had to do with being replaced by a younger man (women face this all the time). Nobody likes to lose out in anything to someone younger, but it's an inescapable fact of life: there is always someone younger, fresher, hotter, sexier waiting in the wings to take your place. Physically, Craig is much more imposing than Brosnan, although I'd argue whether he looks as handsome. "Ruggedly handsome" may be a better description for Craig.

But another problem I think Brosnan had was that #2 he was fired from the series at a time when the audience had made his latest film his biggest earner to date, and there was no reason to believe he couldn't have pulled off a fifth film, therefore Brosnan felt he had unfinished business with the series....but perhaps the biggest reason I think he's bitter about being let go is because #3 EON went on to make the type of movie he had publicly stated he wanted to make (CASINO ROYALE) but was never given the chance. He'd been on record about his ideas for CR, so it must have been a blow to not only lose the role, but then see EON recast it and go straight into production on a film he'd envisioned making. On this account I cannot fault EON: I'm not sure CR was the type of film that suited Brosnan's strengths, and Brosnan, I do not believe, could have played the same type of character Craig is playing.

Brosnan was a pretty good Bond at the time he was playing it. He gave EON what they thought the audience wanted, when they wanted it, and he helped resurrect the series; it's unfortunate for Brosnan that his shelf-life as Bond expired sooner than he probably hoped or planned. Still, it's been 10 years. There's no reason to keep on with this anger. Brosnan, of all people, should appreciate the irony of his position, because he came in and took over a series that still had an actor who was the "Bond of record", even though everyone secretly knew and whispered that Dalton would never be officially brought back by John Calley and MGM. Dalton was allowed to exit gracefully from the series, and Brosnan took over a role where someone else thought they had unfinished business as well. But you never heard Dalton drone on and on and on and bitch about his situation to Playboy Magazine, nor tell EON to go 'f*** themselves'.

The tribute was mild to say the least. Would've done better to have someone parachute onto the stage. Though the plus tended to be the couple of OHMSS clips that there were.

Not a bad idea. Or have more mini-tributes spread throughout the show. Unless you recorded the program, you were likely to miss the "tribute" if you left to use the bathroom.

funnily I had to record it anyway and skidded into the tribute by accident almost. It would've been better spread throughout the program but alas, this Oscar was given over to musicals. Made do with the odd snippets of John Barry. Mildly depressing how he's usually used for the memoriam pieces.

Great to see Dame Shirley in action though. And even Adele.

Dame Shirley could've been complimented at the end as she hit the high notes of an Union flag dropping from the ceiling...

The video wasn't exactly a tribute. Looked more like a long trailer to sell the new Blu-Ray set.

It was nice to see Bassey there, though. And John Barry was represented through out the whole show.

PostSubject: Re: Oscars to feature James Bond 50th Anniversary tribute   Oscars to feature James Bond 50th Anniversary tribute - Page 4 EmptyMon Feb 25, 2013 11:09 pm

Quote :
Oscar’s tribute to James Bond goes bust

Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the first James Bond film, "Dr. No," which exploded onto movie screens in 1962. It also saw the arrival of the most successful Bond adventure of all time, "Skyfall." So it was a natural that the Oscars would salute the most enduring film franchise in history.

But like a nuclear bomb at the end of a 007 movie, the tribute didn't go "Boom!" It fizzled.

Former Oscar-winner and Bond girl Halle Berry was a fine choice to introduce the segment, having straddled both worlds previously. But we should have known something was up when she said that in keeping with tonight's theme, they would be saluting the music of the Bond series (and not, you know, the movies).

This lead into a montage of clips from Bond movies of the past. There were plenty of clips of Sean Connery and Daniel Craig, but Roger Moore was pretty underrepresented considering he played 007 seven times. The editing wasn't anything special, and for a tribute to the films' music, they only featured the classic Bond theme and an instrumental version of "Live and Let Die." Then Shirley Bassey, the 76-year-old chanteuse who performed more Bond themes than any other singer, came out to sing the greatest of all title songs, "Goldfinger."

Bassey received a standing ovation from the crowd, but then the tribute ended and they went to commercial. Which left the question: Where were the Bonds? Every actor who has played 007 on screen is still alive. Connery has kept a low profile since retiring, but he's also the only Bond to have won an Oscar. All the other actors participated in last year's documentary about the series, "Everything or Nothing." And there has never been an assemblage of all 007's in one place. How great would it have been to see Connery, Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig — in tuxedos, of course — standing on stage together.

Rumor has it that Connery and Brosnan turned down the opportunity to appear, and it would have been stranger to see some of the actors than none at all. But, surely there is more that could have been done than just a clip reel and a single song. If you're saluting the music, there are plenty of other great songs to recognize as well. How about getting Carly Simon to do "Nobody Does It Better" (it's composer, Marvin Hamlisch, passed away in 2012)? Paul McCartney might have been a stretch, but they must have been able to get Duran Duran to do "View to a Kill," right?

But at least James Bond did win Oscars with a tie for Best Sound Editing (shared with "Zero Dark Thirty") and Best Original Song for Adele's theme: the first awards for a Bond film since "Thunderball" in 1965. And really, if you want a tribute to James Bond, "Skyfall" is out on Blu-ray and DVD now, and nothing honors the legacy of 007 like seeing him on screen where he belongs.

That about sums it up. It was great to see Bassey, but everything else, nothing to write home about. And I understand having Halle Berry present it because she's an academy award winning actress, but she's also ranked as one of the worst Bond girls of all time by everyone unless you believe in Entertainment Weekly and all that other fluff.

It was a lousy "tribute" video, but Dame Bassey was surely the show's highlight. And how many film series get Oscar tributes anyway? I agree that getting a third performer to go along with Bassey and Adele would've trumped any montage. Does Nancy Sinatra still sing?

I'd say the highlight was Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were. Very moving. Plus she's still got better pitch, vibrato, diction, breath control and phrasing than Bassey and Adele combined.

I disagree the Oscar version had the right music and no matter what they had shown there would have been a vocal group disagreeing with it anyhow. And afterall it is the Oscar show and the the 007 show. They got their moment with a clip and a brillaint performance by Bassy as she sang the purest 007 titlesong.

I disagree with your dissent. If it hadn't have been for either SKYFALL being nominated, or the tribute that was planned, I wouldn't have bothered to watch at all. 007 is the only reason I paid any attention to the Oscars. So for the Oscars to promise a tribute and then really have nothing to show for it is over-promising and failing to deliver. They failed to deliver to the Bond fans. The rest of the show may have been great for fans of Jennifer Lawrence, or The Weinsteins, but not so much for 007 fans.

I mean, this was the Oscars: it's the premiere stage for spectacle and entertainment. For them to reduce their tribute to what was essentially a YouTube clip that could have been put together by any pimply 14-year old boy, is beneath their talents. I actually feel bad for The Oscars because they had a huge opportunity and blew it. When your 50th anniversary show is out-performed by your 20th anniversary tribute, something has gone wrong. As campy and as silly as the 1982 tribute was, you can at least tell yourself an attempt was made to paid homage to the spirit and fun of the series. This "tribute" was all artsy and pretentious, not to mention cheap, brief, and lacking imagination.

I thought she was great....towards the end. And it at least appears she sang live and did not lip-sync. But I agree, there was something off about her performance, and I think part of it felt like the song was moving too fast, so she was forced to say some of the words rather than sing them. If that makes any sense......also, it appeared she was singing to a recorded track and not with a live orchestra, which impacts the way it comes across. She seemed like an island...all alone up there when she should have had the backing of a full orchestra. At least Adele had some backing, but then again, Adele also sounded somewhat drowned out at times by that very orchestra. So who knows.

That was the real Harold Sakata. He was suffering from liver cancer, hence why he looked very frail. He passed away 3 months later, in June that year.
