PostSubject: Hitchcock's Marnie starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery   Mon Mar 18, 2013 5:43 pm

Watching this 1964 suspense thriller is like watching Connery's Bond, but with new name, transported to a different setting.
I figure Connery made this film between making FRWL and GF , possibly right after Woman of Straw, but likely directly before GF.
I don't know if Hitch designed it this way, but this is the only non-Bond Connery film, where I feel like I am still watching Bond. Connery not only walks, talks and looks like Bond here (same toupee), he even dresses like Bond (nice suits and tux too) He's even tough like Bond, threatening a couple of people, even if he doesn't punch. He's even got two Bond-girl worthy girlfriends in Hedren and Diane Baker, and he's all macho with both, very Bond-like.
The way he delivers his lines, intonations, even his facial expressions and postures, seem like a direct lift from GF, or just as likely he carried Marnie over into GF. The Bond resemblance is striking
Watch Marnie and GF back-to-back. You'll feel like Hitch's Mark Rutland from Marnie, stepped right into the Bond persona, without missing a beat.
Watching Marnie, I half expected Cec Linder as Felix Leiter to turn up at some point.
Marnie btw........ obviously a great little Hitch suspense thriller.
Hedren is great looking, but I think Baker is the better looker of the two featured femmes.

I seem to recall an interview with Connery somewhere (can't locate it offhand) stating how much he learned from Hitch in this film that he & GF benefited as a result.

That does explain a lot, because he seems to take the Mark Rutland persona and move it right on over to Bond in GF.
