Jaws is dead at 74

Richard Kiel, who became famous for portraying the James Bond villain, Jaws ... died Wednesday afternoon at the age of 74 ... TMZ has learned.

Kiel starred in dozens of movies over the span of 50 years ... though his Jaws character became his most iconic role after debuting in 1977's "The Spy Who Loved Me" alongside Roger Moore. He returned in "Moonraker" two years later.

The 7-foot-2 Kiel also co-starred with Adam Sandler in the golf classic "Happy Gilmore."

Kiel had broken his leg last week and was in a hospital in Fresno, CA. A family member tells us he passed away this afternoon in the hospital -- and it's unclear if his death was connected to the leg injury.

Kiel played a genuinely spooky and menacing henchman, mainly through actions rather than dialogue.

You have to remember that Kiel suffered from acromelagy, which can reduce your lifespan by up to 15 years. It's amazing that he lived as long as he did.

He was a lovely, kind bloke, and a worldwide ambassador for Bond. He can shall be sorely missed. RIP.

RIP, Jaws. The dial-a-henchman scene which brings him back in MOONRAKER is a classic Bond moment. I'm also one of the few who loved how he switched sides at the end of that film. A very sad loss.

He's biting through cable cars in heaven now.

I wonder if his appearence on BBC Radio 4's The Reunion last Sunday was his last interview. He spoke of conquering his alcoholism and finding Jesus. He also sounded very frail, not an image you normally associate with a man more than seven feet tall.

Maybe he knew his time had come.

It was pretty pee-inducing.

I found it hard to be intimidated by these scenes, compared to the amount of funny ones...

Jaws flapping his arms like a bird in Moonraker's pretitles, the cable car going through the building, and getting shocked through his teeth...his facial expressions were priceless

Both scenes even now have some chill factor though much less so of course now I'm verging on 30. The Moonraker one in particular. One of those nights we had our grandparents and uncles round, TV on, Moonraker and as the alley scene happens I scarper under the dining table where my dad's sitting laughing.

My heart has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, messages, flowers, cards, and food following the loss of my husband. I have taken great comfort from seeing all the pictures that family,friends and fans have been posting on Facebook, many of which I have never seen before.

I have never been more proud of my four children and their families than I have since the death of their dad and papa. They have been my rock and it is through them that Richard lives on.

A special thanks to our good friends Mike and Becky Carey, who are taking care of so many of the details of the service for me, what a blessing you have been to our family.

Thank you one and all for sharing how Richard has touched your lives. It is great knowing that not only was he loved by us, but also by so many others.

While we will miss him being here with us, we will forever hold him close in our hearts. As Christians, we know that this is not the end, and that we shall all be together again.

For those of you who would like to celebrate his life with us, a memorial service will be held on Friday, September 26th at 10:00 at Yosemite Lakes Community Church in Coarsegold, California.
