Austrians Do it Better

Why use Austria for Norway when you can get the real thing?

Apparently because Norway would be very expensive to film in to begin with, and Svalbard is extremely remote. And it's possible that EON couldn't find what they were looking for in Norway.

Some more details as principle photography nears.

Scuttlebutt is that it's a flashback to death of Bond's parents. My personal theory is that might be inspired by Ian Fleming's Octopussy - Major Dexter Smythe on the hunt for a cache of Nazi gold, and killing mountain guide/ski instructor Hans Oberhauser.

Of course they could find what they were looking for! They just chose not to. They're cheap! They could have had everything they wanted in Norway, but they've snubbed me and the glory of my people! Let them take their trifling arses to Austria, which has been overused as a location.

Maybe James' parents were working for OsCorp SPECTRE, realized that SPECTRE had crossed over from legitimate research and development into plans for weapons development and terrorism, so they faked their own death to protect him, and left him an underground laboratory with a video on a computer that cuts on as soon as you turn on the lights, and it explains the entire plot for you. I bet James will run into his old friend and Eton roommate, Ernst Stavros Blofeld, who is now running SPECTRE. Oh wow, this is going to be exciting!

Sam Mendes really likes looking back to TWINE doesn't he? This one is more of a stretch than SF, but using parts of the film as an homage to On Her Majesty's Secret Service - ski sequences, the title, locations, etc.

Seriously, that's all you guys have to say-- that Mendes is remaking TWINE? What about the stunning architecture? That fact they're shooting on one of the most dangerous roads in Europe?

Be reasonable, Sharky. TWINE is the Citizen Kane of Bond movies. It's sacred.

Maybe my remarks weren't clear. I was suggesting that maybe Mendes is remaking OHMSS; or at least loosely following the book's trajectory.

He's already remade TWINE once...but there were a couple of elements he left out, so if he's going back to that well one more time, then it's safe too assume that Bellucci will be the Elektra role, and Lea will be the Christmas Jones role.

Thought it goes without saying really. I assume they're shooting inside the restaurant, given the leaked schedule, which is cool, instead of redesigning the interiors at Pinewood.

By that logic, it's also a QOS and TSWLM homage-knock off because it's in Austria, a GF homage-knock off because it contains a road in the European Alps, and an OHMSS homage-knock off because it features a restaurant and cable car.

Yes and no. I say this only because SF featured an explosion at MI6, a villain from M's past who she betrayed, Scotland, French Bond girl, etc. - all of which featured in TWINE.

Elektra was intended to be who Bond believes could be a Tracy, but really is a Blofeld (both characters in OHMSS), a ski chase was included to harken back to OHMSS, and of course 'The World Is Not Enough' originating from both the novel and film of OHMSS. Spectre seems to be alluding to OHMSS just like TWINE was.

I say Mendes likes looking back to TWINE because both of his films appear to have stronger similarities to TWINE.

Sounds about as likely as Mendes taking inspiration from HOME ALONE. I think the similar ideas mainly come from Purvis & Wade. I can't blame them for wanting to revisit certain aspects of previous films that were sullied by TWINE, and having Mendes and Logan come in and refine it into something more fresh.
