Latest odds from UK bookmakers William Hill: Much as I'd like to see David Beckham getting tortured, obviously the long-odds are for amusement only. Others are plain stupid. For instance, I don't see Ed Miliband's choice of Rosemary Pike anywhere. Are Hills saying the ex-leader of the Labour Party was a clueless buffoon?

I only truly like Elba out of that list.
Damian Lewis is all wrong for Bond.
Of all the terrible names on there, Eddie Redmayne might be the very worst suggestion.
Matthew Goode might be acceptable as well, perhaps? He did manage to exude a certain kind of danger in "Stoker" that I did not see in him prior.

Some of those names have been on that list since 2003.
Some since 1993.
Wasn't DC 50/1 in 2004?

Well, that's how the bookies make money. By listing recognisable names that Eon will never consider.
Perhaps the most interesting if unlikely choice on that list is Jason Statham. Be great to have a Bond who did his own stunts again, but it's not going to happen. Eon will go for another metrosexual.

Michael Fassbender for next James Bond.

I'd like Andrew Buchan to test for Bond. Multilingual, RADA trained, the right age (36) and height (6' 1").
Plus he's good at chippy coldhearted killers as that clip shows. Unfortunately, he seems to have fallen off everyone's radar.

David Walliams is better odds than Hugh Grant.
Who put Robbie knobend Savage on the list?

He's very good in Broadchurch. Don't really see him as Bond, though.
From the other candidates ... Lewis and Elba are both too old now, I don't care what the bookies say.
If EON are intending to return to 'traditionally good-looking' next time, then Henry Cavill or Cillian Murphy could do it.
If they're going 'rough diamond' again, Hardy or Fassbender.

Cavill and Murphy are too pretty and a bit baby faced. I can actually see Murphy playing Superman though…
If we get Hardy I imagine we'll get another Craig era. Fassbender looks like Fleming's Bond.
Jon Hamm would have been perfect a few years ago, and provided he could do an English accent.

I would love for Jon Hamm to do it but I can't imagine the uproar if an American were cast — it was bad enough for DC.
But why not? He's the face of one of the few American basic cable shows of the last few years that didn't have its balls chopped off. Cool guy who smoked and fucked. Sign him up.

He'd be too old now. By the time they start he'd be at least 46. Had they cast him instead of Daniel back in the day it would have been good!

Really?
In what scene in what movie has Bond shown the most colours?
I nominate his balls-beating in Casino Royale by the way.

Don Draper WAS James Bond. I don't know how he'd play 007 any differently.
You can't fire Craig at 47 years of age and then recast the role with a 43 year old actor. They've got to go younger if they want to get any sort of longevity out of the actor.
And I think Cavill will hurt his chances with U.N.C.L.E.

Bond telling Domino about her brother, Pushkin's interrogation, Bond meets Tanya, etc.

I don't think DC is going to be leave because of his age. They're going to go their separate ways on his accord — because he doesn't feel like he can do much more with the character.

The business of the actor needing to be British is a nonissue as the casting of John Gavin showed. Hell, in the early 1970s, UA wanted Burt Reynolds or Clint Eastwood for the part. None of that matters as long as the character remains British. And Brits can hardly complain given the number of Brits playing American heroes.

Ah, 2005. You listened to music on a discman, your mobile phone was primarily for communication and Snake, Justin Bieber was still sucking his mother's tits, and James Bond was about to be played by a chap whose name made him sound like a singlet-wearing pimp from the former Yugoslavia.

I briefly was in this camp after Inglorious Basterds, but a larger exposure to his work has quite dulled the enthusiasm. He is a surprisingly limited actor for a man who gets so much work.

Statham's 48 and 5' 10", so ahead of Craig in both depts. However, Statham looks younger and fitter - Craig 's Bond always looks like a steroid junky to me. I would've said Statham's too big a box office draw to play Bond except he's actively lobbying for the role.
Bond is actually a tough role for your average crybaby actor. Matter-of-fact swagger and laconic toughness are hard to play as Craig and Brosnan demonstrate. Statham has got it, though obviously he's nothing like what Fleming envisaged. Then again, anyone with brains moved away from that definition a long time ago. The role's wide open unless the films are set in period.

Murphy's lead turn in Peaky Blinders has convinced me he can do charm, menace and violence. I agree he's quite finely-featured, though.
