I devoured this book. Absolutely devoured it. Worth its weight in gold without question. It has made me realize I've been a dolt and missed out on most of the Bond comics over the years. Many revelations are in here and I was most intrigued by not just the film what ifs but the sections on Chilean comics and the fun 80's find your fate books made for AVTAK of which I only have one.

Great testimonial. I'll have to check it out myself, too.
I think the greatest shame of having no third Dalton Bond film is that we don't get a heavily influenced early 90s-sounding Bond score.

Let's put it this way. It even details a Dalton Bond script where Bond has to disguise himself at a rodeo....so if you thought Bond as clown in OP was weird.....Tim in cowboy hat....oh boy....

I immediately had an image of Dalton wearing a leather jacket, driving into the night, and bopping along to...
Given films (Bond and otherwise) are always interesting artefacts of the time period they were made (music, fashion etc) it is a shame we never had an early 90's Bond as such. Guess GE was close enough.

My copy of this has arrived, a hefty tome indeed. I'll get to it at some point!

Not quite what I had in mind
Yeah, GE and TND capture that later 90s period very well but that time when the early 90s was still a little bit 80s... it would have been nice to see Bond try tame a Bond girl's voluminous mane underscored by John Barry tackling the decade's new sound.
Side note: why do all of Dalton's Bond women have short hair?

Maybe that's what prompted the 6 year break.

Always thought it was funny that while Dalton was rocking the infamous vampire 'do in the casino scene Pam had the more Connery-esque side part happening.

hegottheboot -- This is such lovely feedback. So grateful for taking the time to share your thoughts. I'm especially glad that you're enjoying some of the more obscure subjects of the book!

Thank you sir! Whenever I can discover new facets I'm floored. I was intrigued by the release press materials from JBR, facebook groups and the book did not disappoint.

Just received mine in the mail. Looking forward to giving it a read after I finish this uncharacteristically dry Tennessee Williams play. 40 pages to go.

I'm chipping away at this. I understand some of these treatments still needed to go through the full development process but I'm actually rather glad the majority of the unmade Bond stories didn't go any further. The only one with any merit would have been Dalton's Japan-set story, but even that needed a good deal of work. Many of these ideas are so self aware that they veer into parody. Most disappointing is Maibaum's and MGW's treatment for the origin story they were developing for 1987. I'm very glad they opted for TLD as we got it.
The TND story idea from Nicholas Meyer could have had some legs, and with the main conflict between China and India, it perhaps would have been just as prescient. But it never amounted to more than an idea.
Not looking forward to getting through all the James Bond Jnr nonsense.

I haven't read it yet, but upon spotting James Bond Jr amongst the chapter headings I figured I'll likely just skip those sections when I do. Have never had any interest in the show.

Yep, neither have I. Suffice to say I haven't returned to the book since.
Up until that point though there are some interesting insights into the development of the scripts. Also worth noting where some future scene ideas in the Bond films may have originated, such as Col. Moon attacking his therapist for lecturing him in DAD.

Finally started reading this recently ... interesting revelations so far. For instance, one of the submissions for Dalton's third film was penned by the guys behind Twins and, erm, Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot and is about as far from Licence To Kill as it's possible to imagine. Reads more like something that would've starred Moore at his most tongue-in-cheek.
