Jonny Greenwood Returning To Score 'The Master'
We had a feeling this would be the case but for some reason that doesn't make it any less thrilling to see it confirmed: Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood is returning to score 'The Master.' His work on "There Will Be Blood" was brilliant and undoubtedly one of the highlights of the film so it's an absolute joy to hear that he'll be back for another round. This news comes via a tweet on 12/2 by British record label Babel founder Oliver Weindling that said simply, "Zed-U recorded part of soundtrack for Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead last week. Film (by Paul Thomas Anderson) to appear in 2013." Zed-U is a British jazz trio signed to Mr. Weindling's label that are apparently being employed by Mr. Greenwood on the soundtrack. You can check out a few videos of the group below.
If nothing else, at least it will have a decent score. On the other hand, it's got Philip Seymour Hoffman.

We have a trailer:
Of all the films to be released this year, this is the one I'm most eagerly anticipating.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD is one of my favorites of the last decade, so I'm hoping the actual flick will be as good. The trailer just leaves me cold, I'm not getting anything out of it.

I love the unsettling, uneasy atmosphere. And Joaquin Phoenix seems to be giving a hell of a performance.
FWIW, the trailer barely scratches the surface of what's going on with THE MASTER. But as a tease, it works pretty well for me.

I think it's an intriguing trailer.
And the fact that it's about founding a religion (Scientology) means it's an interesting subject to me.

Apparently, Paul Thomas Anderson showed THE MASTER to Tom Cruise.

THE MASTER premiered a few days ago tagged onto a screening of a new digital print of THE SHINING. Word came back extremely positive.
Oh, and here's the full trailer:

Looks like the "feel good" movie of the coming fall season.
It's a bomb. No one is going to see this. Another write-off for The Weinstein Corporation.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD didn't do so badly, so I wouldn't count THE MASTER out.
But widespread financial success or no, other than SKYFALL, it's the only movie from 2012's fall/winter season guaranteed to get my butt in a theater.

Speak for yourself. These trailers have singlehandedly sold me on THE MASTER (I didn't even know it was in production until I saw the first trailer).
And I don't know much about the film, but I suspect that its makers never earmarked it as a massive moneyspinner. Anderson isn't a director of blockbusters. He makes critics' films. No one's going to be screaming "Where the heck did we go wrong?" when it fails to post a gross in the hundreds of millions. I expect it'll make most of its money on DVD and end up turning a modest profit, which I guess is all it was ever intended to do.
Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to this one.

Agreed. All of the trailers so far are very underwhelming. Nothing about it excites me.

I'm in the mood to give THERE WILL BE BLOOD another go and maybe also rewatch MAGNOLIA. HARD EIGHT is, I think, the only Anderson I haven't seen, so I'll add it to the list (assuming it's available on DVD over here).

HARD EIGHT is the least of Anderson's films, but it foreshadows the films that follow. HARD EIGHT, BOOGIE NIGHTS, MAGNOLIA, and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE all seem like something of a piece.
THE MASTER now seems to be a move forward with the style Anderson developed in THERE WILL BE BLOOD.
