Cast: Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, Randy Couture, Nan Yu, Amanda Ooms. Novak Djokovic, George Zlatarev.
The Film
The Expendables are back and this time it's personal... Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Lee Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) -- with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard -- are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time -- six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that's nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way....

I'm extremely fond of Stallone, but for some reason I'm not all that enthused about THE EXPENDABLES 2. I'll certainly be seeing it, but right now the only vibe I'm getting is "retread of the first one" (which I found something of a disappointment, mildly entertaining though it is undoubtedly is).

I think "mildly entertaining" gives THE EXPENDABLES too much credit. What an awful film.

Truly. Such cacophonous rubbish.
Every character in that film seems to be calling each other "pretty boy" or joking about sucking each other off. It's closer to The Boys in the Band than it is to Rambo.

I liked the concept of an action ensemble that was a throwback to the 1980s, but the end result felt the bare minimum that they needed to qualify as a "film".

The choppy editing and camera man suffering from Parkinson's (things that Sly has spoken out against in interviews) ruin any comparison to the 80s.

Didn't think too much of the first one, but nevertheless... Chuck fucking Norris and Arnold fucking Schwarzenegger in the same film. It'd be a crime not to watch it!

That's why I said I liked the concept, but not the execution. Weren't you listening?

The film doesn't have Connery, therefore like the first film it is not complete. Plus for a film riffing on 80s, I don't like how it's still obviously a film made in the same generic style as any other cheap action flick these days with the shaky camera and extreme digital grading. If they're gonna homage the 80s, they gotta do it right. And dammit get Connery.

I haven't seen the first one but this one seems to have a better cast so I might give it a try.

I like the new trailer. Looks like EXPENDABLES 2 is the movie that the first one should have been.

The actors look like they're genuinely having fun this time round, and the action scenes look slicker and more exciting (I assume that the budget for thrills n' spills was rather higher on this sequel). The humour seems less forced and funnier, while Van Damme comes across as a terrific villain. More screentime for Schwarzenegger and Willis is welcome (although I doubt that it's much more than last time), and then of course there's Norris.
Foolish to count one's chickens, I suppose (especially when it comes to THE EXPENDABLES 2, of all flicks), but all in all this does look promising.

^ To be fair to Slow Sly, Dolph Lundgren throws a pretty mean punch.
Speaking of which, Sly/Dolph really ought to chuck a Rocky IV reference in there somewhere. 8)

Saw it at the cinema and it is easily the best action comedy I've seen in a long while. The action is OTT and the dialogue is so often of a high smirking calibre, and for those who enjoyed these actionhero's in their original run they get even more from the dialogue among the various tars.
The one between Willis & Schwarzenegger is already a classic. The one where Baldie complains about Anrie saying I'll be back. :lol!:
You want a big laugh with big stars, this is the one.
