| Return of the Jedi (1983) The biggest flaw is that the movie trades in teeth for cuteness. Most of the danger is gone, though that's partly offset by the sheer awesomeness of the action. Well, at least the action in space. I like the pacing, though it maybe lags a tad for 15 minutes or so after they land on Endor. The whole first act is the right idea, and it lets us see one last adventure with all the heroes together. In fact, I think pretty much the whole film is the right idea, it's just lost it's teeth. Han's balls never thawed after the carbonite. That's a problem. Yeah, I know he's not supposed to be the dashing rogue anymore, but Ford's performance is just fucking goofy. I don't know if I want to see Han Solo die, even though it'd be the right thing dramatically, but he should have at least had some balls. He shoulda died blowing up the shield generator or something. Anyone know how he was supposed to die? Was it in an early draft? Just makes sense that everyone risks their lives to save him, and he gives his life to save theirs. Oh well. The Emperor scenes are pretty much top notch, and they really elevate the film. Good Lord, did Lucas screw up Anakin's story in the Prequels. 1. EMPIRE 2. STAR WARS 3. JEDI 4. SITH 5. MENACE 6. CLONES Lucas wants the trilogies to mirror each other. Look at my ranking, they do. |

| Josie and the Pussycats (2001) Great Bond movie. It's got supervillains, international conspiracies (the music industry conspiring to brainwash kids) Alan Cumming (Boh-reese in GE) as villain. Awesome |

Lucas wants the trilogies to mirror each other. Look at my ranking, they do. Here's some stuff Kurtz revealed on how Jedi was originally going to play out, before Lucas started seeing dollar bills. http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/08/12/star-wars-was-born-a-long-time-ago-but-not-all-that-far-far-away-in-1972-filmmakers-george-lucas-and-gary-kurtz-wer/ |

Interesting. I have to say, I'd be in favor of pretty much what he have, just done with more integrity. I like the triumphant ending, but I think the price of victory should have been Han's life. Not in the middle of the film like Kurtz says, but closer to the end. It's not like Leia would be lonely for long. I'm sure Lando would jump right in with a Colt 45. |

| Kinda makes sense why Han got the feeling he wasn't going to see the Falcon again. Actually the scene kinda plays out as if it would be the last time he and Lando spoke again. |

Exactly. The ironic part is that he's the doomed one. |

| I've replotted the prequels about a zillion times in my head, but I think the real key would be having Anakin be more like 15 in Episode I when he's discovered by Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, with Obi-Wan already a Knight and around 32. Take out all the Naboo stuff and instead replace it with the pre-Clone Wars intrigue from Episode II. Then have Episode II be about Anakin and Obi-Wan in the Clone Wars, then Episode III stand as Anakin's fall, minus all the time consuming Clone Wars bits. No cheesy shot of a half-built Death Star, in fact no mention of the Death Star at all. No Jango Fett, no Boba Fett. No Threepio and Artoo. No Mace Windu. No Nute Gunray. No Jar Jar Binks. No crying Padme scenes, no Padme dying for no reason, Anakin's turn is not motivated by love but by desire for power. I'd sort've model it like Anakin as Goering with Palpatine as Hitler. Kinda. |

I'll go ahead and repaste this in the Star Wars thread to reply. In other news, I'm trying to sit through WEST SIDE STORY. Kill. Me. Now. |

It does look stunning on Blu-ray. There are some really nice shots. For whatever reason the movie is boring the crap outta me. |

No action scenes, no gimmickry, fairly straight, based upon true events (not the greatest acting, admittedly). It's decent. The Crowe vehicle I saw in late December was a Hollywood version of a similar theme. BREACH is better.
Shutter Island
I am quite happy with it. Didn't see things coming. There are directors who could have done it better, but I won't complain. Some of the "emotional" scenes felt a bit too much like Nolan (God help me), the whole "Leo character has issues with his wife" shtick reminded me of INCRAPTION, but SHUTTER ISLAND is far superior. What Dr. Cauley says about people not turning mentally sane by an act of will is also true in the opposite direction, I can assure you. Most people don't want to know.
Vivement dimanche!
Tirez sur le pianiste
Double feature on arte. Both good, with a lot of weird humour (dimanche in particular). My first Truffaut films, I believe.
Gomorra
It's been shown on TV several times since I last saw it, now I finally had the opportunity to watch it again. As realistic as I love my movies, no pretentions, an accurate portrayal of the mafia, and the very opposite of the soulless, unworldly, sappy bullshit á la Shpielberg. The excavator shovel ending is just great! |

affection for this movie perhaps from that first moment when Alec Baldwin's narration started. The very narration and the fact it's Baldwin. Somehow what added to my liking early on was the introduction of Margot about her being adopted and always pointed out as such, cuts straight to Royal saying: "This is my adopted daughter, Margot Tenenbaum". Gene Hackman on top form and a special mention to Bill Murray who seems to convey so much with a simple stoic expression.

It has astonishing images, excellent acting, and is a haunting experience as a cinematic portrayal of war. Some pretty pictures, but it didn't grab me. I just don't like musicals. Or at least not very many musicals. |

Love Baldwin's narration. Hackman is king. Love the cover of "Hey Jude": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__t7xZvw0vs I also think the film works pretty well beyond posturing or trying to eccentric for the sake of being eccentric.

Love the cover of "Hey Jude": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__t7xZvw0vs that rendition is quite powerful, how it builds up at the start then bursts into life as the hawk flies. Baldwin, well, a fine speaking fine and without sounding much it does...so much. Also like the way these films are shot. Close ups, angles etc. |
