Meryl won for playing the same role and range over and over and over!!
Rooney went from being unknown in 2010 The Nightmare On Elm Street reboot to being cast in one of the biggest sought after high profile role of 2011;
while at the same time, beating out other more farmous, seasoned and experienced Actresses like Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman, Mia Wasikowska, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Emily Browning, Eva Green, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Watson and Evan Rachel Wood;
to getting nominated for Best Actress in less than 2 years time.
Plus I don't think Meryl can do the Lesbian nude scenes and the Sex Scenes and the Graphic Anal Rape Scene like Rooney did!
It takes talent and the right psychological and emotional mind set for any actresses to do those kind of scenes!! j7's criteria for picking the winner of Best Actress - 'If I can masturbate to what she's done, she wins!!!' |

| I'm glad I didn't watch this in real time. I fast-forwarded through it on my dvr this morning, just stopping at the only 3 or 4 categories I could stand to watch. I've never seen an Oscar memorial so devoid of actual stars and celebrities before. Was 2011 an off-year for celebrity deaths or did the Academy expand the qualifications too broadly? There were some people listed in the memorial who were bankers, talent agents...very few actors and actresses listed in it. Also, it's interesting how quickly they were able to add Whitney Houston to the 2011 memorial list even though she died just two weeks ago, in 2012, yet in years past when people weren't recognized in the memorial the Academy would blame it on there being too many people to recognize or not enough time to include people who died recently.
Overall, the ceremony was pretentious. These people truly do take themselves and their craft way too seriously. At least it appeared all of the political statements and swipes that occurred during the Bush administration seem to be a thing of the past....for right now. My guess is Hollywood will revert to its true colors when a Republican wins the White House again (if that ever happens). Quite honestly, it was the virulent anti-Bush/anti-American grandstanding of celebrities and hosts back in 2003 & 2004 that turned me off. I didn't give a rat's ass about Gael Garcia Bernal back in 2005 and I still don't in 2012.
These ceremonies are sanctimonious, pious, and increasingly irrelevant. They are long winded, with too many categories I don't give a s**t about, and too many awards crowding out the only 4 or 5 awards I truly would be interested in. Until the Academy can figure out a way to make their show interesting (and get rid of weepy, teary-eyed, self-serving fatties like Oprah, who is neither an actor, director or film producer, so why is she getting an "honorary Oscar"?) I won't be watching.
Oh, and by the way, do the French love America now? |

| And who was the guy with Octavia Spencer? She thanked the Academy for putting her with "the hottest guy in the room". So I'm wondering: did she not have a date? Does the Academy have guys there that help the women to the stage if they're wearing a long dress?
I was kind of surprised that Meryl won Best Actress based upon the clips I've seen. If I had to pick a performance based on clips alone, I think it would've been Viola Davis or Rooney Mara. |

| If he was a few years younger perhaps Don Rickles should host. Naturally I'm the soul backer but he'd clean up. Though Jolie's dress might've been too much for him. |

http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/27/opinion/anderson-oscar-night/index.html During the Best Supporting Actor category, I *thought* that the camera had panned back to Christopher Plummer after he had already been introduced. But I was wrong. It was Max Von Sydow. I did a double-take. Combine those two with Nick Nolte, who is 71, and you've got 3 out of 5 nominees aged 70+. The show skewed to an extremely old demographic, no matter how hard the camera operators tried to get Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt into every other reaction shot. The show is simply a mess. A dinosaur. A relic of a time when people cared about Hollywood because Hollywood wasn't going so far out of its way to insult half the country with their political agendas. And no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to give a rat's ass about who wore what dress. I do think, though, that Rose Byrne (nearly Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale) looked emaciated, as did Angelina Jolie (and Rooney Mara to a slightly lesser degree). But the worst of all was Kate Bosworth: Does anyone really think or believe that she looks healthy in that picture? Hollywood insults us with their politics and their attempt to demonize people in "fly-over country", give us distorted views of what is glamorous and healthy and beautiful, peddles sex and drugs to our kids, then wants us to watch them congratulate each other on their biggest night of the year and reward them with increased television viewership and an up-tick at this weekend's box office? No thanks. Hollywood can burn to the ground for all I care. |

| I couldn't sit through the whole thing even with Billy hosting but it was better than last year.
I was happy to see Jessica Chastain looking stunning in that dress but apart from that not much to shout about. |

| Sh*t, I missed the Oscars. Didn't even know they'd taken place until the morning after. That's how much attention I pay to modern videoga- erm, sorry, "movies" nowadays, I guess. Far more regretfully, I missed the customary Tux commentary over here. :x |

| I had to do a double take at Jolie presenting... boy, did she look unhealthy! Her and Pitt at all any award ceremony always look like they're wax statues transported from Madame Tussaud's. Are they the new Jack Nicholson... a first-row presence for the next 40 years?
The ceremony had to be among the most stale ones, although that's no difficult feat these days. Crystal's past his prime. Too many montages (Twilight, wtf?), but no reference whatsover to Bond's 50th, except Dujardin's eyebrows and Sandler's mention of Connery's chest hair in DAF. And what was wrong with just five best picture nominees?
I am happy for Plummer, a Torontonian. The presence of Von Sydow and Oldman was also special. And yes, Chastain has got to be one of the most naturally beautiful actresses in the world! Put her in a bikini, and she'd be the best American Bond girl ever! |

| For the first time in my life I think, I didn't watch any of the show, as I had only seen one of the nominated best-picture films (Woody's film). And Moneyball is the only other one that even mildly interested me.
Actually I saw Tree of Life too but I'm trying to forget that 2 plus hours of my life, that I will never get back.
But Oscar moving from the nominating of 5 films to 9 or 10, or whatever number it might be from year to year, has caused me not to care.
When only 5 films were nominated, these films earned a status. The titles were easily memorized and I would make a point of trying to see them, either before or after the Oscars, even if they weren't on my radar before being nominated, which was often the case.
Way to go Oscar. You managed to completely kill my interest.
Congrats to Woody though on the screenplay win. Midnight in Paris is one of my all-time favourite films, never mind all-time Woody films.

| I felt the show was really crammed and rushed. They need to cut back on the nonsense. Instead of recognizing a man like Douglas Trumbull with more than a 10 second clip, they focus on Oprah and a bunch of other F***S that haven't contributed shit to the world of cinema. Surprised that Alfred Hitchcock and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER were ever mentioned, too. For once, Adam Sandler wasn't a complete shithead. - Makeshift Python wrote:

I gave the score a listen and liked what I heard, I'll take it over many that's passed as music. But best score?
"Bitches leave." I think a number of cues in the score work, and the first track of the album, but, overall, I don't think it's too solid. |
