The one. The only. The king of film music.
No composer could write for the timeless themes of unfilled desire, de ja vu, and love transcending death quite like Herrmann? What better way to start it off than with the first film he scored that contained those ideas?
Something that might interest you. The first page of Benny's handwritten score for the Prelude VERTIGO.

I downloaded the main titles theme from VERTIGO off of I-Tunes a few weeks ago. It's amazing how fresh and modern and new that score sounds. It could be the theme for any sci-fi or mystery movie being released in 2012. It hasn't dated at all.

I accidentally deleted THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL from my computer. Can anyone shoot me a copy? Or just shoot me?

Agreed. That title sequence is probably my all-time favorite.

Intrada's complete release of NORTH BY NORTHWEST in dynamic stereo from new masters.
That clips sound breathtaking. Possibily one of favourite moments in any Herrmann score (and still sounds just as shocking and awe-inspiring today) is when Martin Landau steps on Cary Grant's hand, with the cracking low pedal Bb and E of the trombones and tuba, bass drum, and two timpani. None of the rerecordings capture the menace of the original.
